OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network launched a campaign to bring awareness and resources about health and well-being to Black women. The multiplatform OWN Your Health initiative will explore a gamut of mental, physical and emotional health issues via quarterly initiatives that feature messaging and relevant health and wellness tools. The campaign, which provides opportunities for brands come aboard, focuses on three key pillars: Proactive prevention; “unspoken” issues including fertility, motherhood, sexual and relationship health, trauma financial health and treatments; and what the initiative calls “Superwoman,” sources of pressure many Black women regularly experience.
A lawsuit over whether Donald Trump violated the First Amendment when he blocked followers from his then-active Twitter account has been tossed by a lower court on directive from The Supreme Court. Lower court rulings had found Trump’s actions in violation of the First Amendment, but SCOTUS found the case moot given Trump is no longer a public official.
Time flies when you’re battling for domination of Westeros. HBO this month is launching “The Iron Anniversary,” a monthlong promo to commemorate the 10th anniversary of “Game Of Thrones.” Kicking off with an in-app curated spotlight page on HBO Max that includes 150 videos of behind-the-scenes extras, cast interviews, clips and trailers, the promo also includes a 73-hour marathon beginning April 10 with all eps of season 1 airing on HBO2 starting at 10a. “GoT” has been viewed by 45 million in the US and distributed in 207 global territories. The next iteration in the franchise, “House of the Dragon,” is slated to begin production this year.
Netflix ran away with half of the television trophies and three of the five major film categories at Sunday night’s SAG Awards. “Ozark,” “The Crown,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “The Queen’s Gambit” scored big in the TV section, while “The Trial of The Chicago 7” took the top prize for best picture, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” stars Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman won in the lead acting movie slots. Among other big TV winners were Jason Sudekis for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for AppleTV+’s “Ted Lasso” and Mark Ruffalo in HBO Max’s “I Know This Much Is True” for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series.

Allen Media Group’s broadcast television network This TV this month is expanding distribution to eight major market ABC-owned television station subchannels including in LA, Chicago and Philadelphia. The Byron Allen-owned company purchased This TV from MGM in October 2020. The network—which features movies, comedy, retro television series, docs and event specials—broadcasts 24 hours a day and is available in approximately 86 million US households.

ITV America and the Writers Guild of America resolved their dispute regarding ABC game show “The Chase,” a remake of the British format. Writers working on the show went on strike March 24 over issues related to health and pension benefits and residuals.

Guy Fieri is keeping his seat at the Food Network table.He signed a new multiyear exclusive deal with the network that spans an additional three years of his secret sauce of programming including “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and “Tournament of Champions.” The deal will see Fieri creating through his Knuckle Sandwich production banner for discovery+ as well.
Kristin Davis will headline and exec produce half-hour black comedy “Deeds,” from Ellen Pompeo’s production company Calamity Jane, for HBO Max. Davis has a high-profile project already in the works at the WarnerMedia streamer—the revival of “Sex and the City.” Penned by Michael Davidoff (“Working”), “Deeds” follows a desperate realtor who embarks on a dark path when she’s forced to team up with a drug-addicted, sociopathic young couple to change her station. Pompeo and Laura Holstein will exec-produce for Calamity Jane. Dave Fleming also will exec-produce.
Also at HBO Max, 10 episodes of half-hour comedy “Minx,” which centers on an earnest young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher to create the first erotic magazine for women in ‘70s LA, are in the works. From showrunner and exec producer Ellen Rapoport, Feigco Entertainment and Lionsgate Television, the series stars Ophelia Lovibond (“W1A,” “Elementary”) and Jake Johnson (“New Girl,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”).
Paramount+ revealed a first look at season 2 of series “Star Trek: Picard,” which is slated to debut in 2022. The series features Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and follows this iconic character into the next chapter of his life. It’s produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. For season two, Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Terry Matalas, Michael Chabon, Doug Aarniokoski, Dylan Massin, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as exec producers.
NEW + RETURNING SERIES
Michelle Buteau is back to host season 2 of “The Circle,” Netflix’s social media competition series that returns Wednesday, April 14. Eight new contestants, including Chloe Veitch (“Too Hot To Handle”) will flirt, befriend, piss off and compete in challenges to earn a $100K prize as top influencer.
The Weather Channel will debut “Deep Water Salvage” Sunday, May 2. The series follows some of the world’s best marine construction firms as they battle against the elements and the clock to salvage property and fortunes of others from the effects of extreme weather.
Loki, the imperious god of mischief, is a fish out of water when he lands in a world of trouble with the bureaucratic TVA (Time Variance Authority) in a new trailer for Marvel Studios’ “Loki.” The original series debuts exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, June 11.
AMC’s “The Walking Dead” will have its swan song season earlier than some expected. The 11th and final run will debut Sunday, August 22. The season, which will be released in eight-ep blocks, will run into 2022. The network has a spinoff in the works.
COMING UP
The full performance lineup for “56th The Academy of Country Music Awards,” airing on CBS Sunday, April 18 at 8p, has been set. Kelsea Ballerini, Dierks Bentley, , Kane Brown, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Dan + Shay, Alan Jackson, Elle King, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood are among those who’ll take the stage.
Netflix set May 4 for the second part of “Selena: The Series,” the coming-of-age drama about Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla. The series explores the once-in-a-generation performer’s journey as a young artist, from singing small gigs in Corpus Christi, Texas, with her family to becoming one of the most successful Latin artists of all time.
Urban One Honors, the annual awards show of Urban One, will pay homage to the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the first racially integrated all-women’s jazz band, during the show that airs Sunday, May 16 at 9p on TV One and Cleo TV. Grammy-winning gospel artist Erica Campbell and journalist, author and syndicated columnist Roland Martin will host the event. This year’s theme is “Women Leading the Change.” Among performers slated to appear are Jazmine Sullivan, Da Brat, Le’Andria Johnson, Avery Sunshine, and the all-female house band Kim Burse and the KB Players.
Paramount+ will debut feature doc “Woman in Motion: Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek and the Remaking of NASA” on Thursday, June 3. “Star Trek” actress Nichols’ pioneering work to evolve the NASA recruiting program to hire people of color and the first female astronauts for the space agency in the late ‘70s and ‘80s is in the spotlight.

“The Chicken Squad,” based on the like-titled book series, squawks onto Disney Junior and DisneyNow on Friday, May 14 at 7:30p with two back-to-back eps. Voice cast for the show, which follows the problem-solving adventures of a trio of young chicken siblings and their retired search and rescue dog mentor, includes Tony Hale, Jane Lynch, Melissa Rauch, Sean Giambrone, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Yvette Nicole Brown and Ramone Hamilton.
“My Little Pony: Pony Life” returns for a second season on Discovery Family on Saturday, April 10 at 11:30a. The new action continues to follows the Mane 6 as they discover mysterious objects, uncover puzzling scenarios and experience bonding moments.
TECH TALK
Google’s use of 11,500 lines of code from Oracle software programming language was a “fair use,” according to a decision from the Supreme Court. The 6-2 ruling could have implications in the ways copyrighted material is used without permission. The Motion Picture Assn., for one, had warned a broader interpretation of fair use could allow for unauthorized rip-offs of TV shows and movies.
Beginning today (April 6) Philo and T-Mobile are expanding their partnership. All postpaid wireless T-Mobile subscribers and Sprint customers gain access to Philo’s 60-plus channels, unlimited DVR and more than 60,000 on-demand options for $10.
STREAMING
Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud Network is spreading the laughs to Tubi. The Fox-owned free streamer is now home to a variety of stand-up, interview and animated titles including “All Star Comedy Jam,” “Comedy in Color” and “Cold as Balls.” The deal brings more than 200 eps from the LOL! Network library to Tubi.
HBO Max extended the availability of several Hanna-Barbera and Looney Tunes series, which will no longer be departing the service April 30. Marked safe, for now, are: “The Flintstones,” “The Jetsons,” “Jonny Quest,” “Josie and the Pussycats,” “Paddington Bear,” “Scooby-Doo Where Are You!,” “Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries,” “Tom and Jerry” and “The Yogi Bear Show,” among others.

IN MEMORIAM
Gloria Henry, best known for her role as the mother on the classic ‘60s comedy “Dennis the Menace,” died on April 3. She was 98. Henry made her movie debut in 1947 in “Sport of Kings,” and went on to appear in severa films and TV shows including “My Little Margie,” “Father Knows Best” and “Perry Mason. She landed the role of Alice Mitchell, the matriarch “Dennis the Menace” in 1959 and played the character for the series run, through 1963. She also appeared in “Simon & Simon,” “Newhart,” “Doogie Howser, M.D., “Dallas” and “Parks and Rec” later in her career.
