Harrison Ford has jumped to the small screen to join Jason Segel in Apple TV+ series “Shrinking.” The comedy follows a grieving therapist (Segel) who starts breaking the rules of his profession by telling people exactly what he thinks. Harrison will play a pioneering psychologist diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Segel and “Ted Lasso’s” Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein write and executive produce; Warner Bros. Television and Doozer Productions are producing.
“We’re creating a new definition of what a media company is,” said Candle Media founder Kevin Mayer during a MIPTV keynote. “We don’t have our own streamer so are independent and that facet of our strategy is so important. Demand will grow extremely robustly and if you’re independent in this way there’s not a huge amount of us out there so I like our chances.” Mayer and Candle founder Tom Staggs are “piecing together companies and thinking about where there are synergies,” said Mayer, who added a new product is in the works with Hello Sunshine and Moonbug Entertainment, both owned by Candle Media.
Top categories for commercials during the 2022 Grammys on CBS included Media & Entertainment, Pharmaceutical, Finance, Retail and Tech, according to MediaRadar, with pharmaceutical and retail replacing the automotive and beauty categories in the top five this year. The top 5 categories accounted for 55% of the commercials that aired. Last year, these categories accounted for 44% of the aired commercials.
IPG Mediabrands and diversity and inclusion organization HBCU 20×20 are teaming to create a pipeline between Historically Black Universities and Colleges and IPG. The partnership will kick off with a Media Immersion Day on April 20 to introduce participants to the business through professional development workshops and networking opportunities. “As someone who wasn’t even aware of career opportunities in the agency world until I came across the single agency that recruited on campus, I know how important it is to be in the places where the talent we want to attract is,” said Hermon Ghermay, Global Chief Culture Officer at Mediabrands.
Altice USA has launched a new customer campaign, Let’s Reconnect. In addition to TV spots, Altice sent an open letter to its customers, saying, “We’re making changes to ensure that we are delivering the very best service and experience to our customers and keeping them at the center of everything that we do. This means more speed and reliability through our fiber network and mobile service, 24/7 customer support online and over the phone, the opening of more retail stores across the country, and so much more.” The company is also rebranding Suddenlink to Optimum later this year, to deliver services under one unified brand.
Nickelodeon’s interactive learning platform Noggin has launched “Bubble Guppies: Dive into The Met,” a game that takes kids on a virtual field trip to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The new offering is the first release under Noggin’s expanded early learning programs Big Hearts, Mighty Minds, Healthy Heroes and Brave Explorers.

FX has ordered “The Sterling Affairs,” a six-episode limited series about the downfall of Los Angeles Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling amid the team’s drive to win a championship under coach Doc Rivers. Laurence Fishburne will star as Rivers, and Jacki Weaver (“Yellowstone”) will play Shelly Sterling, Donald Sterling’s wife. The series is written by Gina Welch and based on the ESPN 30 for 30 Podcast of the same name. Executive producing will be by Welch, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force (“Pose”) and Shelburne. Kevin Bray will direct the first block and serve as an executive producer on those episodes. Nellie Reed of Color Force and Rembert Browne will serve as producer. The series will be produced by FX Productions.
Bad Wolf landed its first major new drama commission since joining Sony Pictures Television: “The WInter King.” The returning series, based on Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles, follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast son to legendary warrior and leader. Bad Wolf is producing in association with One Big Picture, with international distribution being handled by Sony Pictures Television.
Visual effects studio W?t? FX announced the opening of its Vancouver office following a $1.6 billion technology deal with Unity late last year. W?t?’s Vancouver presence marks the company’s first dedicated visual effects office outside its home base of New Zealand.
Learning streamer Wondrium has ordered three seasons of “Wondrium Insights,” a new speaker series featuring a diverse group of leaders sharing different experiences and perspectives. Each speaker will present their personal stories and challenges. Wondrium will produce and distribute the series globally to its members in 2022.

Duff Goldman shares his favorite dishes on Food Network’s new daytime series “Duff: Ace of Taste,” premiering Sunday, April 24 at 12p. “Audiences have seen me break down baking science into plain English on the Baking Championships, and that is exactly what I do with cooking on ‘Duff: Ace of Taste’ – and the food is super good! Now, instead of just eating food and telling you what I think about a dish, I actually get to show you how I like to make it,” said Goldman.
Two new series make their debut on Cleo TV this week. “Décor Remixed,” hosted by interior decorator Dominique Calhoun,” premieres Wednesday, April 6 at 9p, followed at 9:30p by “Global Gourmet,” hosted by Chef Essie Bartels.

The Monday, May 2 episode of ABC’s “American Idol” will convene “Idol” alums to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary. Performing for the show will be past winners along with fan favorites: Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks, Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, David Cook, Kris Allen, Laine Hardy, Laci Kaye Booth, Maddie Poppe, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Willie Spence and Grace Kinstler. The singing competition ran on Fox from 2002-2016, and was revived by ABC in 2018.
Three new performers were announced for the “2022 CMT Music Awards.” Taking the stage for the fan-voted awards show will be Mickey Guyton + Black Pumas, Old Dominion, and Carrie Underwood. The show will broadcast live on CBS Monday, April 11 at 8p.

Elon Musk has acquired 73.5 million shares of Twitter, according to an SEC filing listing the date of the $2.9 billion purchase as March 14. The Tesla founder is now Twitter’s largest shareholder, with 9.2% share of the company. As Twitter stock surged 27% on Monday morning, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives suggested on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that Musk – who recently criticized Twitter for possibly “failing to adhere to free speech principles” – could try to “take a more aggressive stance” on Twitter, including some sort of buyout. Tweeted Musk on Monday, “oh hi lol.”
MiQ, the programmatic media partner to brands and agencies, has launched an expanded cookieless toolkit for programmatic campaigns. With Identity Spine, MiQ can connect the growing number of digital IDs available from various tech providers to first-party data, using the data to create privacy-safe non-identifiable cohorts that ad buyers and marketers can use to action their campaigns. This also includes a feature of multi ID translation that already processes and connects over 108 million different IDs on a weekly basis.
Upwave, the analytics platform for brand advertising, unveiled its new ability to help brands measure the impact of brand advertising on Facebook and YouTube, to complement measuring web, mobile, CTV, and linear. Brand marketers have access to of Facebook and YouTube without person-level ads. “As we approach the final days of user-level tracking, brands need a way to implement accurate and privacy-compliant measurement into their advertising strategy,” said Chris Kelly, Upwave’s CEO. “At Upwave, we’re betting on cohort-level measurement and clean rooms as the future-proof alternative.”

Roku reached a multi-year extension of its distribution agreement with Amazon, enabling customers to continued access to the Prime Video and IMDb TV apps on Roku devices. The deal ends fears of a possible distribution stand-off, with Roku stock rising on the news.
Prime Video scooped up US rights to Jennifer Lopez/Josh Duhamel romantic comedy “Shotgun Wedding.” “Packed with action, comedy, and a dash of romance, ‘Shotgun Wedding’ is one of those rare films with something for everyone,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “The film is bursting with star power and fantastic performances.”

The UK government is moving forward with a plan to privatize Channel 4, a move proposed last year by UK culture secretary John Whittingdale. “It is disappointing that today’s announcement has been made without formally recognising the significant public interest concerns which have been raised,” said a Channel 4 spokesperson. “Channel 4 has engaged in good faith with the government throughout the consultation process, demonstrating how it can continue to commission much-loved programmes from the independent sector across the UK that represent and celebrate every aspect of British life as well as increase its contribution to society; while maintaining ownership by the public.”
Paramount+ announced a new slate of scripted and unscripted UK original series ahead of the launch of the streaming service in the UK this summer. Among the scripted shows are “The Ex-Wife” and “The Burning Girls,” based on novels of the same names, along with unscripted series “LA Hairdressers,” “Fashion House” and “Pervert: Catching the Strip Search,” (all working titles).
Japan’s Nippon TV and Sera Film, an independent production and distribution company in Turkey, have entered a co-development partnership to create a new international unscripted format for global exploitation. The partnership will combine Turkish storytelling with the creativity of Japanese game shows.
Sphere, the Canada-based content production and distribution specialist, has unveiled its new corporate brand. The move is designed to enhance and support the creation, production and distribution of content, both domestically and internationally.
Banijay Rights has acquired global distribution rights to BBC factual entertainment shows “The Drop” and “Extraordinary Portraits.” Banijay has also acquired the exclusive multi-territory format rights to “Bloody Game,” a Korean format from MBC, and landed a
multi-territory deal for new relationship format, “EXchange.”
Abacus Media Rights has sold docuseries “Evolve,” produced by Beach House Pictures for Curiosity in association with Blue Ant Media, to ABC – Australia, Viasat World – Nordic and Central & Eastern Europe, RAI – Italy, Studio Hamburg – Germany, UR – Sweden, NRK – Norway and VRT – Belgium.
Beyond Rights and Insight TV have entered into a new partnership, which will see the launch of Beyond branded blocks on Insight TV’s science and technology focused InWonder channel.
French animation production and distribution company Dandelooo has signed a deal with pubcaster France Télévisions for “Jasmine & Jambo”. The 2D animation series is produced by Barcelona-based audiovisual production company Teidees and Televisió de Catalunya.
Off The Fence’s Amsterdam-based distribution arm announced a 190-hour package deal with global factual entertainment brand Curiosity. Under the deal, OTF will deliver 80 titles across five genres to Curiosity’s flagship streaming service Curiosity Stream.

The UNC/Duke Final Four game on Saturday was the most-viewed NCAA Final Four telecast on any network since 2017, averaging 16.3 million viewers across TBS, TNT, truTV and streaming, not including out-of-home viewing. Turner said it expects final numbers to rise by at least 10%.
Despite top talent and an in-person ceremony, Sunday’s Grammy Awards delivered 8.93 million viewers on CBS and Paramount+, according to fast affiliates. That beats last year’s record low 8.8 million but is still a nosedive from the 18.7 million who tuned in in 2020.
