The 134th Wimbledon tennis tournament is shifting to 2021 as a result of the pandemic, with the All England Club and the Committee of Management of The Championships announcing the cancellation of the 2020 Wimbledon tournament. Wimbledon was slated to run from June 29-July 12 this year. Now, the 134th edition of the tournament will take place from June 28-July 11, 2021. “Uppermost in our mind has been the health and safety of all those who come together to make Wimbledon happen—the public in the U.K. and visitors from around the world, our players, guests, members, staff, volunteers, partners, contractors and local residents—as well as our broader responsibility to society’s efforts to tackle this global challenge to our way of life,” the announcement read.

In addition, the ATP and WTA jointly announced the continued suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours until July 13, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The suspension covers the entirety of the ATP/WTA European grass court swing, including ATP events in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Stuttgart, London-Queen’s, Halle, Mallorca, Eastbourne, as well as WTA events in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Nottingham, Birmingham, Berlin, Eastbourne and Bad Homburg. The suspension comes into effect at all levels of the professional game, including the ATP Challenger Tour, as well as the ITF World Tennis Tour. At this time, tournaments taking place from July 13, 2020 onwards are still planning to proceed as per the published schedule.


The Cubs-Cardinals series scheduled for London this season, aka The Mitel & MLB Present London Series is off the books. It was slated to run June 13-14 and is now officially canceled. Games scheduled for Mexico (Padres vs. Diamondbacks, April 18-19) and Puerto Rico (Mets vs. Marlins, April 28-30) were canceled last month.

The National Women’s Soccer League looking at the end of June to get back to play. Commissioner Lisa Baird told The Equalizer that “What we have is an agreed-to strategy with our owners and we’ve been in very frequent and regular communication with owners and players and other stakeholders. I’m really pleased to tell you that we have a general strategy in place. We’ve been just communicating with our players and we’re targeting for the end of June for our season to start.”

To celebrate the NCAA Division I Women’s Final Four, ESPN is running nine matchups from years past on ESPN and ESPNU on Friday and Sunday. The slate culminates on Sunday with the 2006 and 2018 championships airing in primetime on ESPN, spotlighting Maryland’s victory over Duke in overtime at 7p, followed by the Notre Dame’s buzzer beater to take down Mississippi State at 9p.

Fight Network announced that author, producer and boxing manager Adrian Clark joined the organization as a consultant to develop original programming and strategic partnerships with a focus on professional and amateur boxing content, as well as supporting social media and community growth across Fight Network’s digital and social platforms.

ESPN is now airing encore presentations of classic college football games at 8p via Throwback Thursday: CFB Classics to the network’s primetime slate. Leading into each encore presentation, ESPN will air an episode of The American Game, an 11-part docuseries that debuted as signature ESPN CFB150 programming this past season.

SHOWTIME announced the new documentary, Basketball Country: In The Water, a collaboration with NBA star Kevin Durant and sports business executive Rich Kleiman’s Thirty Five Ventures. The film explores how one county in Maryland, Durant’s hometown, has recently produced more elite basketball players than anywhere else in the world. The program will air on May 15 at 9p.

NBC Sports’ new digital series, hosted by Jac Collinsworth, titled Distanced Training: Ready to Get Back in the Game, debuted yesterday. The show provides fans with “a day in the life” of some of the top professional, collegiate, and Olympic athletes via exclusive home footage. The daily shows will be available across NBC Sports’ digital properties, including NBC Sports’ YouTube channel, NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app, and NBC Sports’ social media accounts.

CBS Sports updated programming for April 11 & 12, and will feature the final rounds of the 2004 and 2019 Masters Tournaments, featuring historic victories from Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. CBS Sports’ broadcast coverage will also be available to stream live on the CBS All Access subscription service.

Meanwhile, ESPN will salute the Masters Tournament with encore presentations of the final rounds of two of Tiger Woods’ five wins, Jack Nicklaus’ victory in 1986 and other classic editions of the iconic event at Augusta National Golf Club over three days beginning Wednesday, April 8. The airdates for the Masters salute coincide with the dates ESPN would have been televising the Masters Par 3 Contest and the first two rounds of this year’s event before it was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Telemundo Deportes launches “Best of the Best” encores of Premier League, presenting some of the best moments of the 2019-2020 season with a series of topical weekends starting Saturday, 4 with the key performances of Liverpool. The special re-airs will continue throughout April with “Viva Mexico” that highlights the performance of Mexican players in the league, and the Derbies.

Big news out west as Spectrum Networks announced a carriage agreement to launch the Los Angeles Dodgers regional sports network, Spectrum SportsNet LA, to AT&T video subscribers. With the agreement, AT&T TV, DIRECTV, U-verse TV and AT&T TV NOW customers in Southern California, Las Vegas and Hawaii will gain access to SportsNet LA’s live game coverage once the new MLB season is cleared to begin.

With the spread of COVID-19, people are looking to news organizations for information about the disease. As a result, Twitter followings for major news organizations have increased (see National Public Radio and the Wall Street Journal, pictured here). With the general focus shifting from sports and entertainment to news, what can sports do to help spread information? Below, find a few examples of superstars doing their part:

A day after announcing its carriage of a digital racing series centered around IndyCar, NBC Sports is now adding NASCAR to the mix, with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin headlining a group of 18 drivers who will compete in the NBC eSports Short Track iRacing Challenge beginning Monday at 7p. From Monday-Wednesday, six different drivers will compete in two timed races in Cup Series cars at an iconic track on NBCSN. The top two finishers from each night will advance to the championship race at the virtual Martinsville Speedway on Thursday night on NBCSN.

ESL and Valve Corporation will launch ESL One: Road to Rio powered by Intel as the first of multiple online regional competitions that will act as the official qualification method to ESL’s CS:GO Major in November 2020. The event will feature 56 of the world’s best teams across divisions in Europe, CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), North America, South America, Oceania and Asia. The competition will span four weeks between April 22-May 17 and will feature $255,000 in prize money.

The United Soccer League will see ESPN carry the league’s new Rocket League esports competition. The USL eCup: Rocket League Edition will serve as a month-long tournament that will be participated in by 32 teams from across the organization’s professional ranks, in the Championship and League One with play streamed on the ESPN App and ESPN.com.

NASCAR announced a slate of new fantasy and prop betting offerings on the eNASCAR iRacing.com Pro Invitational Series, created courtesy of NASCAR’s official gaming partner, Penn Interactive. Alongside the launch of the game, Penn also announced that it would serve as the entitlement sponsor of the upcoming eNASCAR iRacing.com Pro Invitational Series event from virtual Dover International Speedway on Sunday, May 3. “During this time of uncertainty, eNASCAR has provided sports fans around the world with an exciting form of sports entertainment that is helping restore some normalcy to the weekend,” said Scott Warfield, NASCAR managing director of gaming. “Now, courtesy of our partners at Penn Interactive, fans can foster an even deeper connection with the new series and have even more incentive to tune into eNASCAR on FOX and FS1.”

Meanwhile, FanDuel Group announced the official launch of its new Props Pick’em eHoops Player Tourney ahead of the NBA 2K Player Tourney tipping off tonight at 7p on ESPN. The initiative will feature eight questions each day for fans to answer for the next game day. A $5,000 prize of FanDuel site credit will be awarded each game day, in addition to a $5,000 prize for the overall winner of the tournament. Players will lock in their answers to that day’s questions prior to the start of each televised session.

Nerd Street Gamers launched an online retail store in partnership with We Are Nations. For the first time, the public is able to purchase Nerd Street Gamers as well as Localhost branded apparel including t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, and hoodies. The high-end gaming PCs used at Localhost facilities will be available for sale in the near future.


NASCAR’s Next Gen car will have to wait another year. “Due to challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic, the debut of the Next Gen car will be delayed until 2022. The decision was made in collaboration with the OEMs and team owners. We will continue to develop the Next Gen car, and a revised testing timeline will be shared when more information is available,” said John Probst, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Innovation.

The National Hockey League Players’ Association and the National Hockey League are offering free remote access to Hockey Scholar, the hockey-themed STEM curriculum for elementary and middle-school-aged students, powered by EVERFI and part of the NHL & NHLPA Future Goals Program. For the first time since its launch in 2014, the Hockey Scholar program, which consists of 12 learning modules, will be available for both teachers and parents to access.


CBS has been running Rewinds, replays of epic March Madness games of the past. They’ve included title matchups like the 1985 historic Villanova upset of Georgetown, the 1997 Arizona win over Kentucky and the 2008 Kansas’ overtime thriller over Memphis. I checked in with Sports Media Watch and was told that CBS’ Rewinds are doing ratings in the neighborhood of 0.7-0.9. If you’re wondering last year’s championship game between Virginia and Texas Tech did a 12.4, some 15 times higher.
One issue that keeps surfacing is how the Patriots will do this coming season without Tom Brady. A trio of Fox personalities weighed in. Colin Cowherd says 4 to 5 wins. Skip Bayless predicts .500, an 8-8 season and Shannon Sharpe says the Pats will win 10 games because of coach Bill Belichick’s success.

With the Democratic convention in Milwaukee moved to August 17th, there’s hope for the NBA. The Bucks are big favorites. Should they advance to the Finals, and should the NBA delay the playoff schedule and continue a traditional home/away playoff format, the Bucks could host through early August. But things are looking bleak for anything traditional. Wimbledon and the Olympics which include July dates have already been scrapped.
The TV talkies continue to grasp at straws, as though the NBA’s front office doesn’t have enough brainpower to examine options. Jay Williams on ESPN says that the Conference finals, East and West, should be played on separate cruise ships.
