Good morning. It’s Tuesday March 28, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Doxing: The phrase doxing refers to when someone maliciously reveals someone else’s personal information – such as address, phone number, or private social media username – online.
TOP NEWS
It’s been a rocky road for Snap Inc. since its explosive IPO. A number of “hold” and “sell” ratings from Wall Street analysts sent the Snapchat parent’s stock tumbling from its initial highs. Now things may be improving: Shares of the company rose 4.5% yesterday, largely thanks to a number of “buy” ratings issued by the research divisions of banks that underwrote the company’s IPO. The company’s stock closed at $23.83, close to its $24 IPO opening price level.
Some major restructuring is afoot at BitTorrent. Variety reports that the P2P tech company has named Rogelio Choy as its new CEO, while company founder Bram Cohen is expected to withdraw from his day-to-day involvement in the company. Instead, he’ll reportedly focus on a new crypto-currency project. The move is a homecoming for Choy, who served as BitTorrent’s COO from 2012 to 2015, before moving to the on-demand parking service Luxe Valet. Meanwhile, the company is reportedly looking to spin out its BitTorrent Live streaming service, which started rolling out to connected TV devices last year, into a separate company. Cohen will reportedly sit on that company’s board, and maintain his spot on BitTorrent’s board as well.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
HTC is hoping that Steven Spielberg is its ticket to scaling its VR efforts. The hardware company announced it’s inked a worldwide partnership with Warner Bros. Under the agreement, HTC will exclusively distribute virtual reality experiences based on Ready Player One, the studio’s upcoming Spielberg-directed sci-fi film. The movie is slated to be released in March of 2018. As part of the deal, HTC will distribute VR experiences through the Viveport app for the HTC Vive headset, as well as for mobile devices.
When a tech-heavy company enters the retail space, it’s no surprise to see some geek-friendly flourishes. The New York Times reports that Amazon is currently exploring the idea of creating physical retail stores for home appliances and furniture. And according to the Times, the company is considering using in-store augmented and virtual reality to let people see how items – such as stoves, couches, or refrigerators – would look in their homes. In addition, the Times reports that Amazon is considering launching an electronics store, simpler to Apple’s retail stores, that, would focus heavily on Amazon devices such as the Prime Video streaming service on the Echo smart speaker. You can check out the article here.
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
Sarah Silverman just got a direct-to-series order from Hulu. The streaming service has greenlit ten half-hour episodes of I Love You, America, a new topical unscripted series that will see Silverman discuss the U.S.’s current political and emotional climate. Set to air weekly, the series hails from Funny or Die. Silverman isn’t exactly a Hulu loyalist, though; her next comedy special will debut on Netflix this May.
Berry Jenkins is going digital. The writer/director is best known for Moonlight (you know, the movie that won Best Picture after not winning Best Picture). The New York Times reports that Jenkins will write and direct a limited-series adaptation of The Underground Railroad, the National Book Award-winning 2016 novel by Colson Whitehead, for the Amazon Prime streaming service. It’s worth nothing that the series has not officially been greenlit yet, but the Times reports that the project has been in the works for months. Pastel, Jenkins’s production company, is slated to produce the series alongside Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
When it comes to the primary drivers of worldwide ad growth, it’s the U.S. first, China second – and then everyone else. According to the latest forecast from Publicis’s Zenith unit, the U.S. will contribute to 28% of global advertising expansion through 2019. China comes in second with 24.4%, while the U.K., India, and Indonesia come in for a rough tie at 4%. Zenith projects that worldwide ad expenditures will grow by 4.4% both this year and in 2018. By the end of this year, Zenith predicts that global ad expenditure will reach $592 billion. Not surprisingly, much of the growth comes from internet ad spending, both desktop and mobile. Zenith predicts that internet ad spend will expand by 13 percent this year, reaching $205 billion. That’s more than the projected $192 billion for traditional TV, which would mark the first time ever that global online ad spend has surpassed television.
Cord-cutting continues to take its toll. According to a new report from Digital TV Research, U.S. pay TV providers can expect to lose 5% of their subscribers by 2022, dropping from 94.957 million subs this year to 90.711 million five years from now. Digital TV Research projects that, by 2022, cable pay-TV revenues will decline by $12.13 billion, though satellite TV revenues are projected to climb by $1.93 billion. Telco IPTV revenue is projected to drop by $3.55 billion, an enormous loss of 32.5%.

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Spotify has acquired MightyTV, a startup whose video recommendation app offers suggestions for movies and TV shows. (MightyTV’s app is designed as a swiping interface; it’s been compared to Tinder.) In addition, Spotify has named MightyTV founder and CEO Brian Adams as its new VP of Technology, tasked with helping to oversee that company’s audio advertising business. The MightyTV app has now been discontinued. According to a statement from Spotify Product VP Jason Richman, the company will use MightyTV’s content recommendation system to beef up its marketing personalization and programmatic ad tech.
Facebook has reportedly hired Apple’s former product lead to serve as Oculus VR’s Head of Hardware. Michael D. Hillman worked on Apple’s hardware from 2011-2015. He also served as VP of Special Projects at the robotics company Zoox between the beginning of 2016 and this past January. Bloomberg reports that he’ll now be tasked with overseeing the development of Oculus’s next-gen VR products, including a wireless headset that the company previewed in October. The announcement comes a couple months after Facebook announced the hire of Hugo Barra, who’s slated to oversee the company’s VR business across both software and hardware. According to Bloomberg, Barra hasn’t actually started his new job yet.
Our Last Trivia Question: The titular characters of Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are slated to appear in the streaming service’s upcoming Marvel min-sereis.
