With original Nightline anchor Cynthia McFadden departing for NBC News, ABC News president Ben Sherwood announced Juju Chang has been promoted to co-anchor of the late night news show. "Juju is the perfect example of someone whose dedication and tenacity to innovative reporting has paved the way for her success," said Sherwood of Chang, who has spent her entire career at the net.McFadden will serve as NBC’s senior legal and investigative correspondent.

IN THE NEWS

In a 100-page brief filed with the Supreme Court, Aereo claims recording broadcasters’ free, over the air signals does not violate copyright law, and that its service is "the next technological step." Expressing confidence that Aereo would prevail in the case, CEO and founder Chet Kanojia said in a statement, "Since the beginning of television, consumers have had a fundamental right to watch over-the-air broadcast television using an individual antenna, and they have had the right to record copies for their personal use since the U.S. Supreme Court Sony Betamax decision in 1984." Court date: April 22.

Dish Network changed course, and is offering WrestleMania 30 to its customers on Sunday, April 6. The decision follows the announcement last month that Dish was dropping WWE’s pay-per-view events because of the launch of WWE Network, a digital service offering WWE’s PPVs. Dish reiterated its plan to "consider the value of WWE pay-per-view on an event by event basis."

More Dish: In the wake of the announcement of Comcast‘s planned acquisition of Time Warner Cable, Dish Network chairman Charlie Ergen contacted DirecTV CEO Mike White about a possible merger, reported Bloomberg. And why not? said BTIG analyst Walt Piecyk: "Given the rapidly changing industry dynamics, everyone should be talking to everyone, and if you’re not you might be left behind."

Fox News Channel medical show Sunday Housecall is moving from 10:30a to 12:30p, so the net’s new Maria Bartiromo entry, Sunday Morning Futures, can take the 10a slot.

Bravo hands viewers control (at least for a few minutes) with "Select a Scene," letting online voting determine which scenes will air on certain shows. For starters, a repeat of The Real Housewives of Atlanta reunion on April 27 will let viewers determine what they’ll see by using Bravo’s Play Live experience. "Select a Scene" will be incorporated into future programming throughout 2014.

Care for a little Springsteen with that snowstorm? Online music streaming service Songza and The Weather Company announced a partnership that uses data from The Weather Channel to help Songza select music to help predict the "context," or state of mind, a user is in and what music might improve it.

LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell (NCIS: Los Angeles) have been tapped to co-host ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops, with Dierks Bentley, Lee Brice, Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Kellie Pickler and Keith Urban added to the line-up of performers. Special airs Tuesday, May 20 at 9p on CBS.

Creating the Perfect Media Pitch: The New Secrets to Selling to Advertisers on Tuesday, April 8 will show you how to distinguish your programming from the pack, and position your network as the optimum home for brands. Agency, brand and network experts gather for a webinar that explains the new partnering opportunities advertisers expect, must-haves for today’s sales calls and best practices for determining a brand’s goal. Please go here for details.

AT THE UPFRONTS

At their energetic upfront event at NYC’s Pier 36, AMC announced a development slate bursting with scripted drama projects, its first-ever scripted comedy, talent deals with the likes of Chris Carter (The X Files), Amy Lippman (Masters of Sex), Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This is the End) and John Leguizamo (Ice Age), and several new unscripted series.

Some highlights:

A pilot for We Hate Paul Revere got the green light, the net announced, about brothers struggling for recognition in Colonial Boston. "We’ll explore the characters that history forgot," said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s EVP of original programming, production and digital content. "For more than 200 years, Paul Revere has had a pretty good ride. It’s about time someone took him down a peg!" Shooting takes place in Q3 2014 for consideration for 2015.

Comic Book Men, now in season three, got a renewal; the unscripted series is averaging one million viewers (live + same day) and more than 720,000 A18-49 at midnight on Sunday nights. AMC is expanding its relationship with Kevin Smith to include the development of late night project Hollywood Babble-On, as well as a docuseries featuring super-collector and "Comic Book Men" regular, Robert Bruce.

In development (working titles) are series including Chris Carter conspiracy thriller Area 51; darkly comic Police State; political drama Kingmakers; Bombingham, about buried demons from the Civil Rights era; sci-fi series The Sparrow; family drama Jerry’s World; Paradise Lost, about a group of friends who withdraw from society; Untitled John Leguizamo Project; comedy No Money Down, about a man working in a car dealership; contract killer comedy Random Acts, and recovery (or not) comedy, Sober Buddies.

The net also announced three books optioned for scripted development and three new unscripted shows in development, including Untitled Billy Corrigan Wrestling Project, with the Smashing Pumpkins singer taking over creative direction of a wrestling company.

"2013 was by all meaningful measures the most successful year in AMC’s history and we are building on this momentum in every imaginable way. AMC is introducing more hours of original programming and the most robust, diverse development slate in our network’s history," said Charlie Collier, AMC president. "It is a personal point of pride for all of us to be working with a roster of such creative, talented and successful professionals, many of whom are entrusting us with personal passion projects."

Brands have seen a 17 percent lift after sponsoring the E! red carpet, Laura Molen, EVP, Lifestyle Advertising Sales Group, NBCUniversal, tells Cynopsis, adding that "the focus on fashion week is to take a highbrow event and make it mainstream." On the agency side, the company is interested in "elevating customer service," says Molen, so that when an agency makes a buy, "you have one invoice."
