Good morning. It’s Monday, March 24, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Despite reports showing that Netflix streaming speed has increased for Comcast customers since last month’s network server deal between the two companies, Netflix is not celebrating. Instead, CEO Reed Hastings said in a blog last week that he’s hoping for a better net neutrality, which would prevent providers like Comcast from charging "a toll" to connect to similar services. "The essence of net neutrality is that ISPs such as AT&T and Comcast don’t restrict, influence, or otherwise meddle with the choices consumers make," Hastings said. Comcast’s EVP David Cohen sent an emailed statement to The Verge in response: "There has been no company that had a stronger commitment to the openness of the internet than Comcast… providers like Netflix have always paid for their interconnection to the internet."

Four major Vine creators are expanding their six-second stardom to YouTube in a new channel called Super Happy Fun Time, Yay! (SHFTY). Viners Brittany Furlan, KC James, Klarity and Brandon Calvillo (who together have 12.6 million subscribers on the Twitter platform), will create comedy sketches for the channel. SHFTY will launch in April.

Amazon is pushing two more pilots up to the plate for its pilot-to-series audience feedback program. Hysteria is a drama featuring American Beauty‘s Mena Suvari as an awkward doctor revisiting her hometown to examine a medical epidemic. Hand of God will be directed by Marc Forster (World War Z) and revolves around a judge who receives visions through his son, played by actor Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy).

Hulu and YouTube are each picking up comedy series Spooked, from YT channel Geek & Sundry. The 22-episode series will follow paranormal investigators played by Julian Curis (Captured) and Niel Grayston (Eureka). The show premieres April 16.

NEWS FROM THE NEWFRONTS

The digital content NewFronts are on the horizon, and this year, 22 publishers including founding DCNF partners Hulu, Yahoo, YouTube/Google, AOL, DigitasLBI and Microsoft will present their digital slates in hopes of reeling in advertisers. One of the newcomers, Scripps Networks, launched a new digital video strategy with lifestyle network ulive (ulive.com) this year. Senior Vice President of Digital Ad Sales for Scripps properties HGTV and DIY Aaron Gallagher told Cynopsis what’s in store for the April 30 event.

Why was it important that Scripps get on the NewFronts roster?
We have a plethora of new and high-quality lifestyle video content from our TV brands and through ulive, we have a megaphone that allows us to deliver this content at scale. I think that makes us pretty unique.

Marketers are expected to spend $5.7 billion on digital video advertising this year and to push that figure to $9.2 billion by 2017, according to eMarketer. What do you think this means for digital video as a platform and as a monetized medium in general?
I think it’s a clear indicator that digital video as a medium has established itself and publishers realize that there’s real revenue opportunity in the space. We’ve seen that marketers are willing to pay a premium to reach viewers across various platforms and devices through digital video content, if they know they’re reaching an engaged, younger audience.

78 percent of buy-side attendees said they picked up at least one new opportunity for clients (according to IAB) at last year’s events. How is Scripps looking to capture clients?
Our presentation will not only highlight the content we’re creating but also the original video content and branded entertainment we’ve developed in partnership with our advertisers in the home, food and travel categories. We’ll also highlight the great work we’ve been producing through ulive in new categories like parenting, wellness, and beauty. In the home category, we’re creating entertaining digital video extensions for our most popular shows like Brother vs. Brother and House Hunters, as well as digital originals like our Weekday Crafternoon series on HGTV.com with Marianne Canada.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Video game developer Valve (League of Legends) distributed its documentary about the game Dota 2, Free to Play, for free on YouTube, Stream and iTunes. The movie follows players preparing for the Dota 2 International Tournament that awards $3 million to the champion and has already hit more than 928,000 views since being released last week. Valve’s League of Legends and Dota 2 are one of the most popular games on Twitch, constantly placing first and second on Twitch’s monthly most viewed game videos.
