DVB-H: Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld is one of three prevalent mobile television formats. DVB-H uses MPEG-4 AVC and other advanced video coding and bandwidth-efficient compression technologies to deliver high-quality services to small-screen devices.
Smartphone usage has doubled in the past three years, and since 2014 has driven all of the growth in digital media time spent, according to comScore’s just-released “Cross-Patform Future Focus 2017” report. Mobile represents almost 7 in 10 digital media minutes, with smartphone apps alone accounting for half of all digital time spent. “Mobile time spent continues to progress upward,” says the study, “hitting a huge milestone in reaching an eye-popping level of one trillion minutes of aggregate media consumption per month in 2016.” That’s nearly double what desktop usage accounted for at its peak.
Vice is taking the plunge into original, short-form scripted entertainment in conjunction with French digital media startup Blackpills. To be distributed on video.vice.com, the content includes productions from filmmakers Luc Besson, Bryan Singer and Zoe Cassavetes.
Pocketwatch, a media brand that creates, acquires, distributes and curates content for kids age 2-11 to be shown on a variety of platforms, closed $6 million in Series A funding led by Third Wave Digital. Investors and prominent angel backers include Les Moonves of CBS, producer Jon Landau, United Talent Agency and actor Robert Downey Jr.
Ellen DeGeneres launched a digital series yesterday sponsored by PetSmart. Animated Ellen’s Pet Dish features DeGeneres’s pets (three cats and four dogs) and their reactions as they watch her daily talk show. DeGeneres’ line of pet products, sold by PetSmart, will be on display. No stranger to digital, DeGeneres’ Ellen Digital Network draws over 300 million video views per month.
At the Scripps Networks Interactive upfront events yesterday, the company shared a robust slate of digital content from the company’s Scripps Lifestyle Studios. Among the offerings: How to House (wt), a lighthearted informational social media series; www.HGTV.com/happy, one-minute videos on DIY topics; and Outside, In Reach (wt), featuring outdoor makeovers.

According to a new report from comScore, Snapchat was one of the top 10 most popular apps last year. One reason for the rise is that while Snapchat initially appealed to a younger crowd, its popularity has spread to the broader population.
Facebook is the latest publishing platform to embrace header bidding, which gives advertisers access to more competitive bids than the traditional “waterfall” auction approach. Rather than build its own technology, Facebook will work with a number of partners, including Amazon Publisher Solutions, AppNexus, Index Exchange, Media.net, Sonobi and Sortable.
The backlash by advertisers disturbed by their proximity to distasteful content on various digital platforms continued on Wednesday with the news that AT&T has pulled its ads from YouTube and the more than 2 million third-party websites in Google’s advertising network.

Amid all the nonsense that sometimes seems to inundate social media, some very good things are happening. After French Snapchat star Jerome Jarre read a story about the devastating famine in Somalia, he tweeted for help from around the globe to raise $1 million in aid. Among those who quickly convinced Turkish Airlines to contribute a cargo plane filled with donated food was actor Ben Stiller, as captured in this heartwarming video. Click here.
