ADVERTISING & BRANDS

TVision Insights’ 4Q16 report offers a different way to look at TV viewing. Using “vision technology,” TVision says it can measure attention to TV on a second-by-second basis, calling attention the “starting point” for consumers moving closer to brands. Which could come in handy for some shows right about now. "Upfront season is a critical time of year for advertisers. As the media landscape continues to evolve, understanding when, where and how attention occurs is key to making the best advertising decisions," Dan Schiffman, CRO and co-founder at TVision Insights, tells Cynopsis. "Our Quarterly Attention Report is laser focused on helping advertisers understand which networks, dayparts and programs will yield maximum impact for the lowest cost." The top primetime TV shows, ranked by attention, include CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Fox’s Sleepy Hollow and NBC’s Superstore. Cable toppers were Travel’s Hotel Impossible, Nat Geo’s Years of Living Dangerously and BBC America’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Rankings are based on the sum of seconds of attention divided by the sum of seconds a person is in the room.

DIGITAL DATA

NBCUniversal cable networks, including Bravo and E!, were included in consumer testing for Hulu’s upcoming live TV service, according to Bloomberg, but not big kahuna NBC. Bloomberg notes that with Disney, Fox and Time Warner onboard, NBC/Comcast is the only company with an ownership stake in Hulu that has not struck a deal for inclusion in its new offering.

Netflix in onboard for the first time for Xfinity’s fifth annual “Watchathon Week.” The binge-watching marathon, from April 3 – 9, gives Xfinity TV customers access to thousands of shows and movies from over 50 broadcast, cable, and premium networks.

Streaming service DirecTV Now is offering HBO free for a year for new “Go Big” and “Gotta Have It” package customers. HBO had been offered for $5/month. AT&T, owner of DirecTV, is awaiting approval of its deal to acquire HBO parent Time Warner for $84 billion. Another offer, for 3 months of pre-paid service and an Apple TV, remains in effect until March 30.

Outside TV is now accessible on-demand via Amazon Prime, iOS, Apple TV, Android, ROKU, and Amazon Fire TV. The Outside TV Features platform expansion is marked by snow-sports films available for the first time as SVOD, such as Tight Loose and Wildcats Never Die, with offerings added in the coming weeks.
