Founder of Discovery Communications John Hendricks will retire as chairman of the company’s board of directors after the annual meeting of shareholders on May 16. Hendricks stepped down as CEO in 2004. "Few words can appropriately convey what kind of person John is, or what he has meant to this company and the cable television industry overall," said David Zaslav, president and CEO.
Reality show Breaking Boston is off A&E‘s schedule after debuting to just over 310,000 viewers last week. Producer Mark Wahlberg‘s docuseries Wahlburgers, also from 44 Blue Productions, wrapped a successful first season on A&E on Wednesday.
Shark Tank is moving to Thursday, at least for one night. The ABC reality competition will have a special airing on April 10 at 8p, says the Hollywood Reporter, with a new episode following in its regular berth, Friday at 9p. A permanent transplant to the ratings-challenged night is a possibility, speculates HR.
New York state leaders are throwing a wrench in Comcast‘s plan to acquire Time Warner Cable, according to the New York Post. The paper says a proposed change in state rules would force Comcast to prove the merger is in the public’s best interest. A Comcast spokesman, however, said the company is "not troubled by these amended procedures."
Fox drama Gotham, a prequel to Batman, released a photo of Donal Logue as detective Harvey Bullock. The Warner Bros. TV project stars Ben McKenzie as future police commissioner James Gordon.
U.S. pay TV companies lost 251,000 subscribers in 2013, reported research firm SNL Kagan, the first decline ever. By year’s end, cable, satellite and telco companies had about 100 million subscribers. Cable operators lost the most subscribers, nearly 2 million for the year; Dish, DirecTV and telcos saw gains.
Netflix snatched exclusive rights to 8-ep mockumentary Short Poppies, written by and starring Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords). Comedy makes its debut April 3.

IFC‘s 2015 slate includes docu-parody American Documentary (wt), and scripted comedy American Storage (wt). The net is collaborating with CollegeHumor on satire Comedy Music Awards, and has in development Westside, a comedy exec produced by Joel McHale (Community) and The Bank, about a dysfunctional family running a sperm bank.
Bill Engvall and 44 Blue Productions are developing a docu-series focusing on the comedian’s family. "Bill’s very funny take on his life and family has always struck a chord with audiences – everyone can identify with his experiences as a husband, father and regular guy," Rasha Drachkovitch, President of 44 Blue, tells Cynopsis.

WE tv renewed Braxton Family Values for a fourth, 26-episode season and SWV Reunited for an expanded sophomore season of 10 eps. "WE tv has become a true destination for quality unscripted originals on Thursday nights," said Lauren Gellert, SVP, original production & development. "These shows have played a significant role in expanding our audience, reaching new viewers, attracting advertisers and building momentum for the network."
A new cast of young mothers are introduced when MTV docu-series 16 and Pregnant returns Tuesday, April 29 at 11p. The net points to a study crediting the franchise with reducing teen births by 5.7 percent since the premiere of the show in 2009.
Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove starts production on season 2 in Vancouver, British Columbia on March 31.Premiere date: Sunday, July 20 at 8p on Hallmark.
Pioneers of Television is back for season four April 15 at 8p on PBS with a sitcom-themed premiere that includes interviews with Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Barr and Bob Newhart.

Animal Planet is bringing back Treehouse Masters for a sophomore season. The show, which delivered 1.3 million total viewers across its premieres and was the net’s second most-watched series last year, returns Friday, May 30 at 10p.
Jon Steinlauf, EVP, ad sales and marketing for Scripps Interactive, shares the secret to a successful brand integration. "The standard we use is always: Can we make a better television show?" Steinlauf tells Cynopsis. "Some of the things we’ve done over the years have really made for better television. Kikkoman supplemented our budget so we were able to take Iron Chef to Japan. When Kellogg’s products are integrated into episodes of our competition shows, the consumer sees the value of having ingredients already in their kitchens. And Disney Parks recently co-produced a special with us that had Food Network host Jeff Mauro and his family vacationing in Disney World, and was one of the highest-rated Friday night shows in years." Discovery Communications announced a deal to supply programming to WASU Digital TV Media Group‘s new24/7pay-TV subscription channel, Qiu Suo. Broadcasting from the SXSQ festival in Austin the week of 3/10/14, ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live saw its third consecutive week of growth in total viewers (plus 3 percent) and A18-49 (plus 4 percent), tightening the gap with NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in both total viewers (-77 percent) and A18-49 (-75 percent), compared to the margins between the shows during Fallon’s first week.
In the battle of veteran reality shows on Wednesday, CBS‘s Survivor beat Fox’s American Idol for the second straight week among A18-49 in their common hour, 2.5/8 versus 2.2/7, a series low in the demo for Idol.
Mixology, the sole original ep in a sea of ABC repeats on Wednesday, also hit a new low, 1.2/3, down three tenths from last week.
The premiere of CW‘s The Hundred scored .9/3 among A18-49, up a tenth from its lead-in, Arrow.
