IN THE NEWS

NBC’s Shades of Blue, starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, was renewed for season three. The police drama leads Sunday night’s 10p broadcast competition by a +50% margin among A18-49, and is tops in total viewers with an average 5 million in Live+SD numbers.

Speaking of Jennifer Lopez, she’ll be one of the judges on NBC summer series World of Dance, which has a premiere date of Monday, May 8 at 10p following The Voice. The competition moves to Tuesdays at 10p on May 30 paired with season 12 of America’s Got Talent. Comedy The Carmichael Show returns for season 3 on Wednesday, May 31 at 9p. American Ninja Warrior is back for its sixth full season on NBC on Monday, June 12 at 8p, followed by the season 2 debut of Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge at 10p.

Also on NBC’s summer slate: spin-off Little Big Shots: Forever Young, focusing on seniors, starting Wednesday, June 21 at 8p; the return of winter game show The Wall on Thursday, June 22 at 8p, followed by the season 4 bow of The Night Shift; new drama Midnight, Texas on Tuesday, July 25 at 10p; the season 5 premiere of Hollywood Game Night on Monday, August 7 at 10p; Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update on Thursday, August 10 at 9p, and new family comedy Marlon on Wednesday, August 16 at 9p.

Ahead of today’s hearing featuring testimony from FBI Director James Comey on President Trump’s claim that former president Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, ranking Democrat on the house Intelligence Committee, told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday that Trump’s claims are “patently false.” On the same show, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said of POTUS, “I don’t know the basis for President Trump’s assertion….I do believe he owes us an explanation.”

Trump blamed a segment on Fox & Friends with judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano for the accusation that British intelligence was involved in surveillance at Trump Tower. But, “Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind that the now President of the Unites States was surveilled at any time, in any way, full stop,” said Fox News anchor Shepard Smith on Friday. “Fox News cannot confirm Judge Napolitano’s commentary….Of course, the president could learn first hand whether the building in which he lives was wiretapped – all he’d have to do is ask the intelligence services. They work for him.”

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith minced no words calling out a colleague for making an unsubstantiated claim about wiretapping. Hero or traitor? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

California lured 4 more series to the Golden State with its production tax credit. FX’s Legion and Fox’s Lucifer are pulling up stakes from Vancouver, while Showtime’s The Affair and Netflix’s The OA are leaving the Big Apple behind. The latest $57.3 million in tax credit allocation for 15 projects will generate an estimated $620 million in direct in-state spending, according to California Film Commission estimates.

The Supreme Court should allow arguments to be televised, argued 76% of Americans in a study from C-SPAN. That said, only 43% could name any Supreme Court Justices.

Say it ain’t soy: Subway is planning a $210 lawsuit against Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, claiming CBC’s Marketplace made false and defamatory allegations about Subway’s chicken. In a report last month, the show said Subway’s oven roasted chicken contained 54% chicken DNA and its chicken strips 43%, with the rest soy. Not so, argues Subway. “Despite our efforts to share the facts with the CBC about the high quality of our chicken and to express our strong objections to their inaccurate claims, they have not issued a retraction, as we requested,” said the sandwich chain.

Now this is how you celebrate Women’s History Month  with the women who are making it, at Cynopsis’ 3rd Annual Top Women in Digital Awards sold-out breakfast tomorrow in NYC. “In this time of convergence and rapid, sometimes unpredictable, changes in digital user behavior, the ability to make meaningful customer connections that move the needle is an exciting challenge,” said honoree Jill Sherman, SVP, social strategy, DigitasLBI. “To be nominated alongside this esteemed group of women – those who are innovating, taking risks and challenging the status quo to find better solutions – is such an honor.” For details, go here.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

FX’s Trust begins production in June in London and Rome, for a January 2018 debut. The initial 10-episode installment of the limited series, exec produced by Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy and Christian Colson, will focus on the 1973 kidnapping of oil fortune heir John Paul Getty III.

ABC passed on moving forward with a pilot for an untitled comedy starring Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons and his wife Justine Simmons, but the project has life in it yet. ABC will have the first look, with streaming platforms along with linear nets expected to be pitched.

Two-hour doc from exec producer John Singleton looks at the 1992 riots through the eyes of people who experienced it firsthand. “As a native Los Angeleno I know the actions of that three day event didn’t just appear out of thin air,” said Singleton. “The city was a powder keg boiling at the seams for many years under police brutality and economic hardship of people of color.”

With emerging social networks and apps launching on a regular basis, it’s important to break through the clutter and cut to the products that can be used as tools that impact your bottom line, advises Karen Vega, Director of social media insights & analytics for Viacom Velocity. “Most important is to stay abreast of the changes or updates where your business or brand has a greater presence or reach,” says Vega, a speaker at the March 29 webinar, What You Need to Know Now About the Hottest Social Media Platforms. “Any updates or changes from a design aesthetic standpoint, to a measurement capability or a change in an algorithm can affect your user base and can greatly impact the way you are currently measuring ROI through that platform.” For more insights from Vega, as well as speakers from Octagon and Music Choice, register here.

Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars has its seventh and final spring premiere Tuesday, April 18 at 8p, following a marathon of the season starting at 11a. BY THE NUMBERS

Ad-supported VOD and SVOD grew 24% among viewers 25-54, to 10.5% of total day viewing minutes in 4Q16 versus the same period in 2015, according to Bernstein Research. The demo was the fastest growing audio segment for on demand, though Millennials 18-24 still reigned as the biggest users of SVOD, with 36.9% of total day viewing minutes.

One in 5 U.S. pay-TV customers said they were dissatisfied with their service, while only one third were very satisfied, according to a Parks Associates survey. Telco services saw the highest drop in highly satisfied customers compared to cable and satellite providers. But there’s hope. “Operators are now adjusting their strategies to address this new environment, including partnering with OTT video services or launching their own independent OTT services,” said Brett Sappington, senior director of research. “Our research also shows that promotional options, including free or subsidized CPE [customer premises equipment], could entice potential cord cutters or cord shavers to keep their services.”

On Thursday, Leichtman Research Group estimated 1.64 million subscribers opted out of pay-TV service in 2016, versus 980,000 the year prior. But cable operators added almost 3.3 million high-speed internet subscribers in 2016, while phone companies lost almost 600,000 over the year. Charter Communications was the biggest winner, tacking on over 1.6 million broadband users, for a total of 22.4 million; Comcast added 1.4 million, to top the field with 24.7 million.

DIGITAL DATA

Amazon Prime members will be able to stream Oscar winner Moonlight starting May 21, for free, thanks to an extension of Amazon’s exclusive content agreement with A24. Amazon offerings Room and Ex Machina also hail from A24.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Ads running during lifestyle programming scored 22% higher among all viewers across interest in products, attention to brands, intent to seek information and purchase intent, according to Nielsen’s Environment and Advertiser Impact Study, commissioned by Scripps Networks Interactive. When it came to emotional engagement, ads in lifestyle programming outperformed drama-style genres by 52%, and event-related genres (like sports and news) by 161%. “If you only buy audience, you run the chance that your ads may air in a place where people don’t engage with the messaging,” said Chris Ryan, SVP of ad sales research and strategy for Scripps. “How people engage when they’re watching ads on our networks is the key to success – both ours and our advertisers’.”

VIDEOS IN SHORT

Snapchat will publish over 30 “Our Stories” during the 3 weeks of NCAA March Madness play, showing students trash talking rival schools, parties and crazy moments from games, as part of its partnership with Turner. Promos on TV, encouraging viewers to share photos and videos, will include Snapchat codes that viewers can scan to unlock filters. And NCAA sponsor Capitol One created a sponsored lens that will run April 2-3, the first time a brand has run back-to-back sponsored lenses.

GOING GLOBAL

FremantleMedia unveiled a look at Lost in Time, an entertainment format created in collaboration with The Future Group the uses Interactive Mixed Reality to follow 3 contestants transported into different eras (Wild West, Ice Age, Medieval age, Jurassic period) and compete in challenges. Viewers will be able to play against the show and against players from across the country. The Norwegian series launches on Norge on March 25; FremantleMedia is handling global rights.
