Ahead of today’s hearing featuring testimony from FBI Director James Comey on President Trump’s claim that former president Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, ranking Democrat on the house Intelligence Committee, told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday that Trump’s claims are “patently false.” On the same show, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said of POTUS, “I don’t know the basis for President Trump’s assertion….I do believe he owes us an explanation.”
Trump blamed a segment on Fox & Friends with judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano for the accusation that British intelligence was involved in surveillance at Trump Tower. But, “Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind that the now President of the Unites States was surveilled at any time, in any way, full stop,” said Fox News anchor Shepard Smith on Friday. “Fox News cannot confirm Judge Napolitano’s commentary….Of course, the president could learn first hand whether the building in which he lives was wiretapped – all he’d have to do is ask the intelligence services. They work for him.”
Fox News anchor Shepard Smith minced no words calling out a colleague for making an unsubstantiated claim about wiretapping. Hero or traitor? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.
California lured 4 more series to the Golden State with its production tax credit. FX’s Legion and Fox’s Lucifer are pulling up stakes from Vancouver, while Showtime’s The Affair and Netflix’s The OA are leaving the Big Apple behind. The latest $57.3 million in tax credit allocation for 15 projects will generate an estimated $620 million in direct in-state spending, according to California Film Commission estimates.
The Supreme Court should allow arguments to be televised, argued 76% of Americans in a study from C-SPAN. That said, only 43% could name any Supreme Court Justices.
Say it ain’t soy: Subway is planning a $210 lawsuit against Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, claiming CBC’s Marketplace made false and defamatory allegations about Subway’s chicken. In a report last month, the show said Subway’s oven roasted chicken contained 54% chicken DNA and its chicken strips 43%, with the rest soy. Not so, argues Subway. “Despite our efforts to share the facts with the CBC about the high quality of our chicken and to express our strong objections to their inaccurate claims, they have not issued a retraction, as we requested,” said the sandwich chain.

With emerging social networks and apps launching on a regular basis, it’s important to break through the clutter and cut to the products that can be used as tools that impact your bottom line, advises Karen Vega, Director of social media insights & analytics for Viacom Velocity. “Most important is to stay abreast of the changes or updates where your business or brand has a greater presence or reach,” says Vega, a speaker at the March 29 webinar, What You Need to Know Now About the Hottest Social Media Platforms. “Any updates or changes from a design aesthetic standpoint, to a measurement capability or a change in an algorithm can affect your user base and can greatly impact the way you are currently measuring ROI through that platform.” For more insights from Vega, as well as speakers from Octagon and Music Choice, register here.

One in 5 U.S. pay-TV customers said they were dissatisfied with their service, while only one third were very satisfied, according to a Parks Associates survey. Telco services saw the highest drop in highly satisfied customers compared to cable and satellite providers. But there’s hope. “Operators are now adjusting their strategies to address this new environment, including partnering with OTT video services or launching their own independent OTT services,” said Brett Sappington, senior director of research. “Our research also shows that promotional options, including free or subsidized CPE [customer premises equipment], could entice potential cord cutters or cord shavers to keep their services.”
On Thursday, Leichtman Research Group estimated 1.64 million subscribers opted out of pay-TV service in 2016, versus 980,000 the year prior. But cable operators added almost 3.3 million high-speed internet subscribers in 2016, while phone companies lost almost 600,000 over the year. Charter Communications was the biggest winner, tacking on over 1.6 million broadband users, for a total of 22.4 million; Comcast added 1.4 million, to top the field with 24.7 million.

When it came to emotional engagement, ads in lifestyle programming outperformed drama-style genres by 52%, and event-related genres (like sports and news) by 161%. “If you only buy audience, you run the chance that your ads may air in a place where people don’t engage with the messaging,” said Chris Ryan, SVP of ad sales research and strategy for Scripps. “How people engage when they’re watching ads on our networks is the key to success – both ours and our advertisers’.”
