IN THE NEWS

President Obama’s “Mean Tweets” segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, posted on the ABC late nighter’s YouTube channel March 12, is the most-watched video ever in the series, with over 17 million views. Sample: “How do you make Obama’s eyes light up? Shine a flashlight in his ears.” “That’s pretty good,” said the president.

Andrew Jarecki and Marc Smerling, the director and producer of HBO’s The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, released a statement saying, “Given that we are likely to be called as witnesses in any case law enforcement may decide to bring against Robert Durst, it is not appropriate for us to comment further.” Jarecki was interviewed on CBS This Morning on Monday, but canceled scheduled appearances on other shows, including The Tonight Show.

Durst was arrested for murder on Saturday; on Sunday’s HBO doc, he was heard mumbling that he’d “killed ‘em all” when he didn’t know his mic was on. Said Durst’s lawyer, “We believe the arrest warrant came from a television show, not actual facts.”

HBO hasn’t been the only net on Durst’s trail. ID is premiering an updated version of Vanity Fair Confidential: The Robert Durst Story on Sunday, March 22 at 7p. Episode includes information about the accused’s relationship with alleged victim Morris Black.

Comedy net LAFF, set to debut Wednesday, April 15, secured TV rights to over 250 theatrical films in deals with Sony Pictures Television, The Walt Disney Studios and Miramax. Titles include the likes of Jerry Maguire, Stir Crazy and This Is Spinal Tap.

PBS will simulcast a documentary about the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil-drilling explosion with Pivot. The Great Invisible, directed by filmmaker Margaret Brown, premieres on PBS’s Independent Lens and the Participant Media net on the fifth anniversary of the disaster, Monday, April 20.

Apple is planning a streaming service with a “skinny” bundle of about 25 channels, including ABC, CBS and Fox. But not, at least for now, NBC, reports the Wall Street Journal, suggesting Apple soured on Comcast after past talks didn’t bear fruit. Apple’s service would be available on Apple devices, with the goal of a September launch date.

Discovery Communications’ first 2015 “Say Yes to the Prom” tour event Monday was a success, Adria Alpert Romm, chief human resources and global diversity officer, tells Cynopsis. “The renewed sense of confidence I saw in 40 young girls in New York can only be attributed to a true collaboration of efforts across the industry. Discovery is a mission-driven company and continues to look for new ways to ensure that ‘Say Yes to the Prom’ is touching the lives of as many young women around the country as possible, and great partnerships with like-minded organizations have helped to make that happen.” Next stop: Denver.

Crown Media Family Networks announced the launch of Crown Connectivity, a new division designed to create 360-degree seamless integration opportunities for advertisers across Hallmark and Halllmark Movies & Mysteries’ linear, digital, and social media platforms. “Viewers are increasingly engaging with our brand beyond our linear channels, creating an abundance of new opportunities for marketers to convey their messages in a more holistic and impactful way,” said Bill Abbott, president and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks.

CBS introduced a new data-driven approach for analyzing and buying time on broadcast television called “Campaign Performance Audit. “We are offering clients a new way to analyze Nielsen’s performance-based data to achieve ideal reach, frequency, targeting and placement for clients looking to craft a campaign that delivers the optimal return on their television advertising investment,” said David Poltrack, chief research officer, CBS Corporation and president of CBS Vision. The net has been testing the approach with select advertisers since last fall.
