Good morning. It’s Friday March 13, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The Southeastern Conference named its heir, announcing that Greg Sankey would become the eighth commissioner of the conference. Replacing the retiring Mike Slive, who will be leaving in July, Sankey has served as Executive Associate Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer for the league office since 2012.
"The universities of the SEC represent the greatest combination of academic and athletic excellence and I am honored to be selected to follow Mike Slive as commissioner of the Southeastern Conference," Sankey said. "The SEC is poised to make a difference in the lives of student-athletes for generations to come. We must ensure that the lessons they learn from their achievements in competition and in the classroom translate into success in life after college."
Almost bracket time. Turner Sports and CBS Sports begin the road to the Final Four with the pairings announcement for the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship with the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Selection Show on Sunday at 6p on CBS. Greg Gumbel hosts and will be joined by Clark Kellogg, Doug Gottlieb and Seth Davis from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York. The lineup will see Scott Barnes, Chairman of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, join from Indianapolis while Jim Nantz, Grant Hill and Bill Raftery join via satellite from the United Center.
Meanwhile, ESPN delivers the matchups for the 64-team women’s field on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special Presented by Capital One on Monday at 7p. ESPN’s Final Four studio team will see host Kevin Negandhi joined by analysts Kara Lawson and Rebecca Lobo, as well as during ESPNU’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special Extended Coverage Presented by Capital One at 8p. Interviews and segments will include an interview with Dru Hancock, the chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee as well as live interviews with South Carolina’s Dawn Staley and Maryland’s Brenda Frese during the ESPN hour. For the first time, FiveThirtyEight will cover the probabilistic projections of the event, offering an interactive bracket that calculates each team’s chances of advancing through the rounds.
Spike TV tapped the services of combat sports announcer George X and Manny Rodriguez to serve as the SAP Spanish announce team for the debut season of Premier Boxing Champions tonight at 9p. "Premier Boxing Champions on Spike will be huge among Hispanics in the USA,” said George. “Boxing is part of the Mexican sports culture. Many of our fighters are Latinos too, so I think is great for the fans because not only they will be able to watch a high-caliber English broadcast, but also have it available in Spanish on SAP."
Speaking of boxing, Greg Cohen Promotions has reportedly announced a multi-fight deal with CBS Sports Network to carry its roster. Championship Boxing will debut on CBS Sports Network on April 17 at 10p. “I am extremely proud to be unveiling this series with CBS Sports Network,” said Greg Cohen. “This is a huge next step in the evolution of my company. This is going to be a great year for televised boxing and it’s an honor to be working with such a prestigious television partner to make it happen.”
FOX Sports reports that UFC is packing punch so far this year, with events on FOX Sports 1 averaging 1.4 million viewers for a markup of 43% over the same period in 2014. Meanwhile, the channel is averaging 853,000 viewers in the A18-49 demo in the sport during that period, and are up 81% in A18-34 and 78% among Men 18-34.
Down the hall, FOX Deportes saw its UEFA Champions League coverage of Real Madrid/Schalke rank as the highest rated and most-watched Spanish-language sports program for the day on Tuesday, snaring 299,000 total viewers and 196,000 P18-49.
On the local front, MSG Network announced that Liam Neeson will narrate The Garden’s Defining Moments, with the first 10 episodes running over 10 consecutive nights starting March 17. The series celebrates some of the greatest moments at Madison Square Garden spanning the venue’s more than 135-year history. The debut episode, The Dunk, will feature interviews with John Starks, Pat Riley, Jeff Van Gundy, Phil Jackson, Patrick Ewing.
Meanwhile YES announced that Brooklyn Nets sideline reporter Sarah Kustok will take on color commentary duties beside play-by-play man Ian Eagle during that channel’s Nets/76ers telecast on Saturday at 7:30p.
Centroamerica TV, the official channel of the Central American community in the US, locked up stateside rights to carry the match between El Salvador’s C.D. Fas and The New York Cosmos live on Saturday at 5:30p.

The 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival will see the first-ever Concert for Legends as part of the festivities. The event announced that Aerosmith will perform at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in the event on August 7 at 8p. The concert will pay tribute to the legends of the Game on the eve of the Enshrinement for the Class of 2015.
Burger King detailed its March Madness plans, returning for the second year for Madness Your Way during the tournament. This year’s campaign will see Kenny Smith and Seth Davis in a new series of TV spots promoting its 2 for $5 sandwich line up and participating in the Fan Fest in Indianapolis for the NCAA Final Four, offering fans autograph signings with college basketball stars. In addition, the brand will give NCAA Final Four attendees the chance to get free rides to the Indianapolis events in Burger King branded vehicles.
Gatorade signed Jabari Parker to an endorsement deal, releasing a new ad featuring him in the new Gatorade Recover spot “Building Jabari Parker.” The spot examines Jabari’s early basketball years through his time at Duke and up to present day in the NBA. This ad will first launch on TV on Saturday, March 14 and feature placements in the NCAA Tournament from 3/19 -3/22.
Tennis Channel is now available on Roku, with customers able to pick from two options available to view live and on-demand action from Tennis Channel. Audiences who already subscribe to Tennis Channel through their satellite, telco or cable provider will have access to Tennis Channel Everywhere on their Roku players and Roku TV models. "Launching a channel on the Roku platform marks a consistent effort by Tennis Channel to keep our digital offerings at the forefront of today’s media and entertainment innovations," said Patrick Wilson, senior vice president of distribution, Tennis Channel. "With close to 90% of the live tennis on TV, we are constantly striving to give our audiences the convenience and freedom to access Tennis Channel when, where and how they want it on their smartphone, tablet and now on the Roku platform, which reaches millions of consumers. FloSports agreed to a multi-year deal with Boston based athletic footwear and apparel company, New Balance; and a separate multi-year deal with the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation (NSAF) to provide coverage of the Indoor and Outdoor New Balance High School Nationals. The event runs through March 15 and will see FloSports produce a multi-camera live-stream that will feature all track races and all field competitions.
TuneIn announced plans to stream live audio coverage of every 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship game through Westwood One starting with Selection Sunday this weekend. Last year, listeners tallied 1.2 million listening hours on TuneIn with round two of the tourney being the highest streamed round and the National Championship game being the most streamed game.
