Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 13, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
King Digital Entertainment (makers of the Candy Crush Saga mobile game) is planning to launch an IPO valuing $7.56 billion, which is worth more than 15 percent of S&P 500 companies. Each of King’s 22.2 million shares would be priced between $21 and $24, and is expected to debut the trading on March 26. Fox Business reports King would command a market value worth more than other major tech companies like AOL, Lions Gate Entertainment and even 2.8 times more than struggling J.C. Penny. Last month, King revealed that its fourth quarter revenue hit $602 million, and $159 million in profits.

Amazon greenlit four of its five new Primetime Pilots that Amazon Studios debuted last month as part of its original programming push. The four pilots that will receive full seasons include: Bosch, Transparent, The After and Mozart in the Jungle. The fifth pilot that got the boot, The Rebels, was a football comedy produced by Machael Strahan and Ice Cube. Amazon has now greenlit nine original shows including Alpha House and Beta.
Netflix made a deal with Warner Bros. Intl. TV Distribution to stream The CW‘s The 100 series for Canadian subscribers, a day after the U.S. show’s broadcast. The sci-fi series, which will be available on Netflix starting March 20, is about the last humans left that have taken refuge at international space centers after a nuclear apocalypse.
Netflix is not only pushing exclusive content deals, but its also insisting on an Emmy. The service announced its original series Orange Is The New Black will be submitted for consideration as comedy, to give both of its originals (House of Cards) a chance in the drama and comedy categories during the Aug. 25 ceremony. Netflix submitted OITNB as a drama at this year’s Golden Globes, but lost to Breaking Bad.
CBS and the Academy of Country Music announced the launch of a new web concert series called ACM Sessions yesterday. The series will feature country music stars and rising talent, and the first session is with Jerrod Niemann available on-demand at CBS.com and its partner sites.

All Media Network released an app for TV catalog and discovery site, SideReel, for iOS devices yesterday. The app includes the Tracker feature, which allows users to catalog shows and episodes of their favorite series, and discover new shows with its library of shows from sources like Hulu and iTunes. The SideReel site has more than 12 million monthly unique visitors and over seven million registered users, with more than 27,000 shows listed.
TubeFilter released the Top 100 Most Viewed YouTube Channels Worldwide for the month of February, and the site’s co-founder Josh Cohen broke it down for Cynopsis. “It takes a lot to top PewDiePie and the gaming channel’s more than 24 million YouTube subscribers, but Shakira did it in February to become the Most Viewed YouTube Channel in the World with a lot of help from Rihanna,” Cohen said. “When Rihanna (who can boast more than 85 million Facebook fans and 34 million Twitter followers) appeared in the music video for Can’t Remember To Forget You, it pumped up Shakira’s view count in a very big way, ending the month with more than 258 million views. So what? The world watched Shakira’s video on YT roughly 9.2 million times a day, 384,000 times an hour, 6,416 times a minute, and 106 times a second last month. By comparison, the world viewed 103 PewDiePie videos a second during the same timeframe.”
And, the highlights from the month’s results include:
- The Other Chart Toppers: Disney toy review channel BluCollection took third place, with 183,437,875 views last month. While Katy Perry‘s VEVO channel took fourth at 182,585,655 views last month, and gaming channel Stampylonghead took fifth at 159,332,178 views last month.
- Top Gainers: As previously mentioned, Shakira’s VEVO channel had a 229 percent month-over-month increase, but Jimmy Fallon‘s new channel home at The Tonight Show had a 156 percent month-over-month increase in views from January to February.
- Top Channel Distributors: Vevo came in first with 17 channels in the Top 100. Maker Studios came in at second with 11 channels, and Machinima at third with four channels.
Apple released its latest iOS7 update to the iPhone and iPad, which specifically improved the mobile commerce focused feature, the iBeacon. If an iOS7 user has an app installed, it will now “look” for beacons and receive notifications even it its shut down. Previously, the app had to be running in the background to detect the beacon signals, but now retailers only have to convince a consumer to download an app (not open it as well).
Discovery Communications has promoted John Honeycutt to its Chief Technology Officer. Honeycutt most recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Discovery Networks International.
