Brand Awareness: Brand awareness is the extent or level to which a potential customer can identify and recall a particular service or product. Increasing brand awareness is generally one of the major goals of any ad campaign, digital or otherwise.
 
 

TOP NEWS
 

Snap Inc.’s shares have taken a hit in the days since its explosive IPO, with stock analysts almost universally insisting that the company is overvalued. One of the reasons for that: There’s nothing to stop other companies from copying Snapchat’s core features. Case in point: Facebook just added a Snapchat Stories clone directly to its Messenger app. Called Messenger Day, the new feature lets users share photos and short videos with their Facebook contacts. As with Snapchat Stories, the photos and videos disappear after 24 hours. Facebook had been testing the product since last fall, in countries including Australia and Poland. It’s now available worldwide via all iOS and Android updates. This isn’t the first time that Facebook has emulated Snapchat’s core products. A Stories feature landed on Facebook’s Instagram last year. And WhatsApp, another another Facebook company, is currently testing a version of its own.
 
 

ADVERTISING
 

Last year, NBCUniversal and Vox Media formed Concert, a premium ad network designed to let marketers reach around 200 million online consumers. Now the network has a new advertiser: Conde Nast. The publishing company’s properties include GQ, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and The New Yorker. “Our goal always is to deliver for our marketing partners scalable, high quality advertising experiences aligned with the targeted data they need to reach consumers in a uniquely trusted environment,” said NBCU exec Linda Yaccarino.
 
Zenith Media projects that programmatic advertising will rise by 31 percent in 2017 – faster growth than any other digital channel, including social media and online video. MEASUREMENT
 

ComScore has started up a new service. The media researcher says it will now use its panel of over 12,500 homes to measure consumer behavior across network-connected devices. Called Connected Home, the service is designed to deliver usage insights into devices such as mobile phones, computers, smart TVs, and streaming sticks. Connected Home will measure areas such as usage frequency, household demographics, engagement time, and device penetration.
 

 
PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES
 

FilmStruck has struck a new streaming platform. Turner’s film buff-oriented streaming service, launched as a partnership between Turner Classic Movies and The Criterion Collection, is now available for Android TV. Among other devices, the Android TV OS is compatible with the Xiaomi Mi Box, the Nvidia Shield, and certain Sony Bravia TVs. The service was already available for devices such as Google Chromecast, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV. FilmStruck’s base offering costs $6.99 per month. A version that adds The Criterion Collection’s “Criterion Channel” ups the price to $10.99 per month.

 

 

POLICY
 

Republicans have made no secret of their antipathy toward certain Obama-era communications regulations, and it’s been widely assumed that the Ajit Pai-led FCC is on the path to repealing many of them. But when it comes to one such regulation – a rule requiring internet service providers to acquire consent before using private data in ad targeting – Congress may beat the FCC to the punch. Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona just released a resolution that would strike the rule down, as well as prevent similar rules from taking effect. 34 other senators have backed it so far. The resolution would pass under the Congressional Review Act, a rarely-used law that lets Congress undo recently-passed federal regulations.
 
 

BRANDED CONTENT
 

Branded content studio Viacom Velocity has entered into a year-long partnership with Shaun “Shonduras” McBride, a digital media influencer best known for his Snapchat content. Under the new deal, he’ll be creating and consulting on new projects for Velocity. “As one of the earliest influencers to organically emerge on Snapchat, Shaun has an innate ability to craft stories across various social platforms that create meaningful interactions with fans, and this aligns perfectly with what we do at Viacom Velocity where we make powerful connections among our fans, content, and marketing partners,” said Viacom Velocity exec Thomas De Napoli.
 
 

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

Titan Platform, a Korean startup focused on content sales, VR, and original hardware, has landed its first U.S. CEO. The role goes to Adrian Sexton, who formerly held executive roles at Endemol Shine and Lionsgate. Sexton will be tasked with expanding Titan Platform’s expansion into the North American market. To start, the company will announce the launch of its own streaming device next month.
