BE ORIGINALFox gave a big vote of confidence to four shows, with early renewals for Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a second season, The Mindy Project and The Following for third seasons and New Girl for a fourth. "These shows are some of the best and acclaimed series on television, with influential, culture-driving stars," said Fox Broadcasting’s chairman of entertainment Kevin Reilly and COO Joe Earley. Sleepy Hollow, Glee and Bones have already gotten pickups.
NBCUniversal announced Friday that for the first time, all its entertainment nets will give Upfront presentations during the traditional Upfront week, including a May 15 presentation of NBCUni Cable Entertainment Group’s entire family of networks (including Bravo, E!, Esquire, Oxygen, Sprout, Syfy and USA). "Showcasing our entire portfolio to our advertising partners all at once is in response to marketplace demand and a natural next step in the evolution of the NBCUniversal portfolio coming together as one," said Linda Yaccarino, president, advertising sales. "In a world of fragmentation, aggregation and scale means everything for our clients."
Multi-tasking late-night host Craig Ferguson announced Saturday at SXSW that he will exec produce I F—ing Love Science, inspired by the Facebook page that has over 10 million likes, for Science Channel. "Think of it as a late night Google search that goes a hundred pages deep until things get weird – and then you just keep going," Ferguson told the crowd via video. The Green Mountain West Productions/Karga7 Productions series debuts in 4Q 2014; Ferguson’s syndicated Celebrity Name Game bows in the fall.
Aereo got bad news Friday: federal court judges denied the service’s emergency motion to overturn the injunction against it in Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Montana, declaring, "Aereo has not made a strong showing that it is likely to succeed on the merits of its appeal." See you in the Supreme Court, said Aereo, where it will battle broadcasters starting April 22.

Louis C.K. is set to host NBC‘s Saturday Night Live on March 29; the writer/comedian first hosted the comedy sketch show in November 2012. Season five of FX‘s Louie launches in May.
Newsmax cofounder Chris Ruddy was on CNN‘s Reliable Sources Sunday morning to talk about NewsmaxTV, a cable news net the conservative media company is launching in June. Should Fox News be worried? "We have five million opt-in email subscribers. That’s bigger I believe than the core audience of Fox News," said Ruddy. "Online we’re already a significant powerhouse and this is just the next step for us. The boomer market – which we’re focusing on – has 80 million Americans. There’s really not much on cable servicing them."
Starz is drawing viewers into the world of Leonardo da Vinci ahead of the season premiere of Da Vinci’s Demons with a digital app that allows users to have their portrait "drawn" by the artist, and a quiz measuring users’ propensity for the dark side. "We aim to bring people deeper into the world that Da Vinci’s Demons creates by finding ways to make our show content relevant and personal to consumers," explained Erin Dwyer, executive director of digital marketing.
CW‘s Reign offered two versions of its latest episode: one on TV Thursday night, and another, "too hot for TV" version on the CW web site Friday morning. Ratings result? The freshman drama saw a 40 percent lift from its series low last week, hitting .7/2 among A18-49.

With Upfronts approaching, Cynopsis was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at 20th Television‘s client presentation from Executive Vice President of Media Sales Michael Teicher. As has been well-reported, 20th’s new show is Celebrity Name Game, with Craig Ferguson. Here are a few more highlights from their pitch:
"Some of the challenges we’ve heard from brands and agencies are about ratings fragmentation, aligning brands in contextually relevant programming, standing out from the competition, and managing inflation to make sure ads are seen where they’re most impactful. We’re going to help [clients] create their own customized network, but with scale. We’re going to deliver content that consumers are passionate about, display ads in the right shows and the right context to reach target communities, and help manage costs. Most important? Ads will be seen live, important especially in time-sensitive categories such as movies and retail."
"There isn’t a CMO in this country who isn’t losing sleep over millennials, a difficult audience to reach. If you don’t start to build a rapport with them now, how will you gain their respect a few years from now when they’re in your specific demo? Our millennials are reflective of today’s U.S. population trends. They are 80 million strong and the most culturally diverse audience out there. We did an Adult 18-29 cut – Modern Family and Family Guy are at the tops of all broadcast TV. For Men 18-29, we have six shows at the top of the rating chart. What an excellent complement to sports… you can reach this difficult group [for less money]."
"No more important emerging group is English-dominant Hispanics. We have some of the top three shows on all of broadcast [that reach this audience]. Modern Family, Family Guy, How I Met your Mother, King of the Hill. We own half the list of A18-29."
"Wendy Williams is on fire. In the fifth year of a show, it’s rare for ratings to be up this much – 43%. Why? Our theory is that she’s just about 50, she has a 13-year-old kid, she’s become more mature and sophisticated. She’s resonating with women now."
Amazon.com struck a content licensing deal with BBC Worldwide North America that will make Amazon Prime Video the exclusive online-only subscription home for season one and future seasons of Orphan Black. The thriller returns to BBC America for season two Saturday, April 19 at 9p.
Debi Mazar (Entourage) and her food purist Italian husband, Gabriele Corcos, are headed back with another season of Cooking Channel‘s Extra Virgin. "Lucy and Ricky in the kitchen" demonstrate how to cook Tuscan on a budget on Wednesday, April 2 at 8p.
Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) will star opposite Timothy Hutton in ABC drama pilot American Crime, written and exec produced by 12 Years a Slave‘s John Ridley.
Katie Holmes (Dawson’s Creek) is onboard ABC‘s Richard LaGravenese Dangerous Liaisons-esque drama pilot as a woman running a philanthropic foundation.
Actor/country musician John Corbett (Sex and the City) will star with Denis Leary in FX‘s Leary-penned pilot Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, about a rocker trying to make a comeback.
Bebe Neuwirth (Frasier) joins Tea Leoni and Tim Daly in CBS political drama pilot Madam Secretary.
Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) has joined Fox pilot Dead Boss, starring Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) as a woman trying to prove she didn’t kill her boss.
Rebecca Romijn (King & Maxwell) will play a love interest for Rob Lowe‘s character in NBC comedy pilot The Pro, The Hollywood Reporter was first to reveal.
Chris Conroy (Sorority Row) has been cast in soapy ABC country club drama The Club, from CBS Television Studios.
Melissa Roxburgh (The Vampire Diaries) won the female lead in CW spinoff Supernatural: Bloodlines, airing as an episode of Supernatural on Tuesday, April 29 at 9p.
Joanna Going (House of Cards) landed a series regular role in DirecTV family drama Navy St. Production begins in May for a fall launch.
The new Corona Light campaign from Goodby Silverstein & Partners is bypassing millennials to focus on discerning middle-aged drinkers "ready for a light beer you can actually taste." The goal: "Break through the clutter," Jim Sabia, chief marketing officer a Constellation Brands (which owns Corona) told AdAge. "We were being outspent 60-to-1… We are going to target who is drinking us the most."
When it comes to pitching to advertisers, a whole lot has changed in just five years. "We must show how creative and media are inextricably linked and how all channel elements work together. Don’t make the client have to do that," advises Tom Talbert, group director, media services at Lowe Campbell Ewald. A panelist at upcoming Cynopsis webinar, Creating the Perfect Media Pitch: The New Secrets to Selling to Advertisers, Talbert adds, "It’s imperative to demonstrate a direct connection between the strategic media solution and client KPI’s. Offer a clear roadmap on how to correlate the two."
