IN THE NEWS

More Bang for the buck: With Nielsen’s first ever Total Content Ratings, measuring live+35 day viewing across multiple platforms including VOD, TV and DVR, CBS series grew an average of 54% from Live+SD numbers in the first 13 weeks of the 2016-17 season; Big Bang Theory had a 67% boost. The numbers exceed live viewing of CBS series 15 years ago. “This brand new data is a potentially very valuable media planning tool for our clients and their agencies,” said David Poltrack, chief research officer, CBO Corp. and president, CBS Vision. “It certainly adds a new dimension to an advertiser’s program selection process, as well as more clarity about the true incremental viewing that is of enormous and increasing value in today’s changing landscape.” Digital viewing via the CBS web site, app or streaming service was not included, as those metrics are “still in development.”

That same changing landscape has resulted in ESPN’s decision to lay off some of its on-air talent, with cuts reportedly taking place through June. “We have long been about serving fans and innovating to create the best content for them,” the sports net said in a statement. “Today’s fans consume content in many different ways and we are in a continuous process of adapting to change and improving what we do. Inevitably that has consequences for how we utilize our talent. We are confident that ESPN will continue to have a roster of talent that is unequaled in sports.”

With Esquire shutting its linear operation, Team Ninja Warrior is moving to NBCUni sib USA. An 11-part season 2 launches on Tuesday, April 18 at 10p, following WWE Smackdown. Warrior, launched in 2016, was Esquire’s most-watched original series ever.

“I’m a little sad because I feel like it’s a really good show,” said Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden at the INTV conference in Jerusalem. Walden was referring to 24: Legacy, averaging 7-8 million viewers in Live+7. “We had really high hopes,” said Walden, who suggested the net’s post-Super Bowl launch strategy was “a little over-ambitious…messages get lost after a game like that…I’m wondering whether broadcast can sustain something so serialized.” A renewal decision isn’t expected until May.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Netflix grabbed 8-part Korean series Kingdom, a zombie drama set in Korea’s past, slated to debut in 2018. “I wanted to write a story that reflects the fears and anxiety of modern times but explored through the lens of a romantic fascination of the historical Joseon period,” said writer Kim Eun-Lee (Signal). “Working with Netflix helps us to unlock this creative vision for Kingdom.”

Amazon green flagged original series Le Mans: Racing Is Everything, exploring the 24-hour annual car race. New Black Films is producing.

Independent content studio The WorkShop inked a talent agreement with adventurer and two-time cancer survivor Sean Swarner, and is beginning production on True North: The Sean Swarner Story, a one-hour documentary picked up by American Public Television. The doc will follow Swarner on his icy trek to the North Pole this April, as he looks to become the world’s first cancer survivor to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam.

Isaac Apataker and Elizabeth Berger inked a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox that elevates them to executive producers and showrunners of NBC hit This Is Us, with creator/EP Dan Fogelman. The upward move puts the brakes, for now, on Apataker and Berger’s How I Met Your Mother spin-off, in the development cycle.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Season 5 of Ion medical drama Saving Hope debuts Tuesday, March 14 at 12a. Encores will air Saturdays at 12a and the following Tuesdays at 11p.

Craft in America: Nature returns to PBS for season 8 on Friday, April 21 at 10p (check local listings). Series features artists whose inspiration is the environment.

New Housewife Tinsley Mortimer joins the cast of The Real Housewives of New York City for season 9, starting Wednesday, April 5 at 9p. Get up to speed with memorable moments from the past 2 seasons with a How They Got There special on Wednesday, March 15 at 9p.

Will Gilmore Girls live again on Netflix? “We hope,” Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for the streaming service, told the U.K. Press Association. “We obviously loved the success of the show, fans loved how well it was done.”

Freeform has a hot summer planned. Shadowhunters returns for the second half of season 2 on Monday, June 5 at 8p, followed at 9p by the season 3 launch of Stitchers. Season 5 of The Fosters, currently airing Tuesdays at 8p, arrives Tuesday, July 11 at 8p. And newcomer The Bold Type, focused on women working at a magazine, debuts with a 2-hour premiere on Tuesday, July 11 at 9p.

TV One true crime series For My Woman premieres Monday, March 20 at 10p, featuring outrageous stories of men who committed crimes in the name of the women they love. The show is a spin-off of network hit For My Man, which debuted in 2015. Mid-season return of TV One’s Justice By Any Means airs Monday, March 27 at 9p.

COMING UP

CBS freshman comedy Superior Donuts will focus on racial bias in the March 13 episode, called “Amazing Racists.” Said exec producers Bob Daily, Garrett Donvan and Neil Goldman in a screener note Monday, “When we set out to create this series (based on the Tracy Letts play) for CBS, we wanted to touch on issues that were timely, relevant, and newsworthy – something we were not able to do on our previous gigs, including Frasier and Community. We feel this episode is especially pertinent in these unruly times: it’s about racial profiling and, on a broader level, the concept of unconscious bias.”

Nat Geo WILD is celebrating the 100th episode of The Incredible Dr. Pol, on Saturday, March 25 at 9p, with a one-hour special at 8p highlighting the series’ most memorable cases. The compilation special focuses not only on the vet and his charges, but a film crew that spends time with the family in rural Michigan.

The cast of Fire Island, an unscripted series for Logo from Kelly Ripa and Mark ConsuelosMilojo Productions, has been set. Among the beachfront house roommates for the summer are a dancer, a marketing strategist who gave up a career as a doctor, a  photographer, a model, an artist – and, of course, a pot-stirrer.

CASTING

Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men) will star in ABC comedy pilot Losing It, about three misfit adult siblings and their parents, all losing it in different ways.

Linda Lavin (Alice) and Elliot Gould (Doubt) joined CBS comedy pilot 9J, 9K and 9L as series regulars, reports Deadline. Lavin and Gould will play the parents in a family that shares an apartment building.

Noah Wylie (Falling Skies) is onboard CBS pilot Perfect Citizen. Legal drama focuses on a whistleblower who joins a law firm in Boston.

Marcc Rose (Straight Outta Compton) will play Tupac Shakur and newcomer Wavyy Jonez will tackle the role of Notorious B.I.G. in USA drama pilot Unsolved, following the investigations into the murders of the rap stars.

Add Alison Brie to the Community alum in the season finale of ABC’s Dr. Ken, starring Community’s Ken Jeong. Community creator Dan Harmon also guests, as himself, on the episode slated for Friday, March 31.

VIDEOS IN SHORT

Bravo Media and Mashable have teamed for digital video series Love U. In 6 episodes, host Dr. Roshini Raj will explain the science between falling in, and out, of love. It’s the second series to emerge from a deal between NBCUniversal and Mashable.

DIGITAL DATA

For the first time, more homes have Netflix (54%) than have DVRs (53%), according to a survey by the Leichtman Research Group. Just 6 years ago, 44% of households had DVR and 28% subscribed to Netflix.

Season one of AMC’s Preacher is on demand now through April 4 (first 2 eps are available unauthenticated), and will be streaming exclusively on Hulu starting April 5. Sophomore run of the show launches this summer.

The premiere of People/Entertainment Weekly Network’s week-long reality series, Adulting 101, started streaming yesterday. Presented by Hello Giggles, each 22-minute episode shows “adulting coaches” coming to the rescue of millennials who “just can’t.”

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Progressive re-introduced insurance clerk Flo in two new 30-second animated commercials that launched yesterday. Turner Ignite’s Content Partnerships team worked with Progressive and the crew behind Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken to develop the campaign, produced by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. Turner previewed “Air Flo” during NBA All-Star weekend on TBS and TNT.

Fifteen of the top 200 advertisers have taken media buying in-house, thanks to their ability to buy programmatically, according to Brian Wieser, analyst at Pivotal Research Group, reports MediaPost. Though Weiser called it “a relatively significant escalation,” agencies aren’t being left in the cold. “Overall, the impact of this trend is possibly slightly negative for holding companies because it leads some marketers to drive more decision making than might have otherwise occurred,” said Wieser. “As time progresses, we expect to hear of more marketers participating in such activities. But at the same time, we also expect that the depth of involvement many of them will have with agencies may expand as well.”

Samba TV announced the launch of a data management platform enabled with its first-party, real-time TV viewership data. The DMP, in partnership with Acxiom’s LiveRamp, offers advertisers the ability to have a single, de-duplicated view of the customer journey across linear, OTT and digital platforms. The DMP has been in development for over 2 years.

GOING GLOBAL

The European Court ruled in favor of ITV against TVCatchup.com, which had been streaming its channels for free online. “This finding recognizes the vital importance of intellectual property protection in maximizing investment in original UK TV content and preventing free-riding,” said an ITV spokesperson. “We’ve long argued that the carriage of ITV’s main channel on cable and satellite platforms should be the same commercial negotiations as our non-public service channels.”

DISTRIBUTION

Azteca America entered into 3 affiliate agreements with Entravision Communications Corporation. A group of full-power stations serving San Diego, Laredo, TX and Yuma, AZ/El Centro, CA will become Azteca affiliates, expanding Azteca America’s network reach to 75 cities and 20 managed stations.

Content Media and Palatin Media secured joint international distribution for comedy Date My Dad, premiering on Up TV in the US later this year. The 10-parter will be co-produced by Content and Palatin Media.
