03/06/15: Netflix secures global rights to A+E’s ‘The Returned’; Hulu’s ‘Deadbeat’ to return on April 20 with celebrity line-up; Vimeo lands deal with LGBTQ film distributor Wolfe Video

Netflix secured the global rights outside of North America for The Returned, a zombie drama from FremantleMedia. Adapted from the French series Les Revenants, Netflix will stream each new episode 24 hours after its March 9 U.S. TV debut on A&E. The U.S. version is executive produced by Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel) and Raelle Tucker (True Blood) and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Kill the Messenger), Mark Pellegrino (Being Human) and Jeremy Sisto (Suburgatory).
In more Netflix news, the streaming service picked up eight episodes of drama The OA from Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, the duo behind Sound of My Voice. Marling will star and co-write with Batmanglij, who will also direct; Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner (Plan B) will executive produce alongside Michael Sugar (Anonymous Content). The show is expected to premiere in 2016.
Vimeo struck a deal with LGBTQ film distributor Wolfe Video to offer 150 films and power Wolfe’s distributor and sales sites. Vimeo now features Sundance Film Festival winner Undertow, as well as The Circle, which was the Swiss submission at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes.
Hulu added another kids series to its line-up: The Wiggles’ program Ready, Steady, Wiggle. In an agreement with Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Hulu will exclusively premiere the 104 episodes from the Australian program for U.S. subscribers. Hulu snagged SVOD rights to Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins, Bunnytown and non-exclusive streaming rights to Handy Manny earlier this week.
With lifestyle content publisher Evolve Media’s purchase of Total Beauty Media Group, TotallyHer Media will now count 50 million unique visitors per month. "Total Beauty is the category leader, and the team has built a fantastic brand with a very large, loyal, engaged audience," Evolve President and Co-Founder Brian Fitzgerald told Cynopsis. "This acquisition squarely fits with our strategy of increasing the quality, breadth and diversity of audiences we publish to.”


unveiled the A-list guest list for the second season of its original series Deadbeat, set to premiere on April 20. The stoner-comedy, produced in part by Lionsgate Television, will welcome James Franco, Danny DeVito, Fred Armisen, Michael Ian Black, Gilbert Gottfried, Jim Norton, Zachary Levi, and Finn Wittrock in the latest season. Lionsgate is also producing several other series with Hulu, including a show with YouTube celeb Freddie Wong and a half-hour comedy from Jason Reitman.
Music recognition app Shazam may be looking to “shazam” more than just tunes. With $30 million in funding it received from from investors in January, Reuters reports that Shazam wants to give users the ability to find data about objects, such as the nutritional content of any food. "We want to expand the universe of what you can Shazam," the company’s Chief Executive Rich Riley told Reuters.
Twitter is currently eying Periscope, according to TechCrunch. The live streaming app enables users to launch live video anywhere and broadcast it.

The New York Times’ branded programming studio launched The Selects, which will allow aspiring film directors to enter for a chance to work with the NY Times on ad collaborations. NYT is asking for under 5-minute video reel submission to T Brand Studio until April 4. The winner will be announced at the NYT Digital NewFront event in New York City on April 27 from 9-11a.

YouTube star Kandee Johnson (2.5 million subscribers) returned yesterday for the second season of Glamour’s digital video series Beauty ReCovered on Conde Nast Entertainment’s platform The Scene. In the first episode, she transforms into the pop star Charli XCX and gives viewers tips on make-up application. Upcoming episodes from the weekly series will have Johnson morphing into other celebrities such as, Miley Cyrus, Lea Michele, Rita Ora, Lana Del Rey, Demi Lovato and more.
