Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 4, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees.
Today, meet Courteney Monroe, CMO, National Geographic Channels. On March 9, Seth MacFarlane’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, will premiere simultaneously on ten 21st Century Fox networks, including both Nat Geo and Nat Geo WILD.
What was your first leadership position and what lessons did you learn from it?
While I had managed other people before, my first truly significant leadership position came in 2002 when my boss was fired and I was promoted into her role as the VP, Advertising at HBO. Suddenly, I was charged with managing several people who had been my peers, many of whom were senior to me in both age and tenure. It was quite daunting. I learned a tremendous amount from that experience – that everyone wants to feel valued and respected, regardless of who they are, or what their position within the organization is. I learned if you treat people with respect, they will respect you back. I learned that when people feel valued and appreciated, it motivates them. I also learned that it’s never about you; it’s always about the team.
What’s the most important part of managing a staff?
Setting clear direction and clearly articulating what the priorities are. The world, and our industry in particular, is changing rapidly. There are so many things we could be doing, so many potential ideas and avenues to pursue. It’s very easy to get distracted and lose focus. Thus, it’s important to set clear goals and priorities for the team to ensure they spend their time on those things that will have the greatest impact on the business. Better to do a few things exceptionally well than several things in a mediocre way.
Tell us about a difficult management problem and what you did to overcome it.
There was a time when I managed a team of people who were just like me. They thought like me and shared my sensibility. What I ultimately found though, was that while things ran smoothly since we were always in agreement, we weren’t always thinking through all the alternatives or necessarily making the right decisions. From that experience, I learned how incredibly important diversity is. Not only diversity in terms of gender and race, etc., but also diversity of thought. If you only surround yourself with people who think exactly like you do, you will never get the full picture and you will miss both landmines and opportunities. I’ve now make a concerted effort to build a team of people with varying strengths, points of view, and sensibilities to ensure we aren’t just drinking our own Kool-Aid!
What do you look for when interviewing job candidates?
Generally, by the time I meet with a candidate, they’ve already been screened for the necessary functional skills and experience. So I want to see that they’re passionate about our business, our brand, and our success. Passion is infectious and can’t be taught. I also look for people with strong points of view who aren’t afraid to voice them, particularly to me.

Travel Channel promoted Ross Babbit to Senior Vice President of Programming and Development. Prior to joining Travel Channel in 2012, Babbit served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of DIY Network.

Maureen FitzPatrick has been named Executive Producer of new syndicated court show Hot Bench, produced and distributed by CBS Television Distribution. She joins Executive Producer Randy Douthit. FitzPatrick is currently Executive Vice President of Programming and Development at CTD.
Endemol North America tapped Ben Samek to serve as Chief Operating Officer and promoted Endemol USA‘s Rob Smith to Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs. Both will report to Cris Abrego and Charlie Corwin, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs.
Eli Velazquez was promoted to Senior Vice President, Sports, at Telemundo Media. Velazquez had been Vice President, Sports since 2008.
Rive Gauche Television announced the hiring of Cindie Nemes as Vice President, Development. Nemes will be charged with developing and selling original programming for the US Market.
Weigel Broadcasting Co. appointed Milwaukee broadcaster Mark Strachota as Vice President and General Manager of its Milwaukee properties. Strachota currently serves as General Manager of Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Eugene Young will join Ryan Seacrest Productions in early March as president. The veteran producer was previously managing director at A. Smith & Co. Productions.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. has extended contracts for Roma Khanna, President, Television Group and Digital; Chris Ottinger, President, International Television Distribution and Acquisitions; Steve Stark, President, Television Production and Development, and John Bryan, President, Domestic Television Distribution until 2016. Khanna will continue to report to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Barber, whle Ottinger, Stark and Bryan will report to Khanna.
A+E Networks elevated Don Robert to Senior Vice President, Research and Analytics from his position as Senior Vice President, Program Research, and hired Lisa Mallen as Senior Vice President of Ad Sales, FYI. Mallen previously served as Vice President, National Sales Manager for OWN.
Comedy Central upped Brooke Posch to Senior Vice President, Original Programming and Development, East Coast. Posch had been Vice President.
U.K.’s Pioneer Productions named Nav Raman Director of Development and Simon Barnes Executive Producer. Former Channel 4 Commissioner Raman had been an Executive Producer at Nutopia; Barnes had served in that position at BBC Belfast.
