03.03.17 Good morning. It’s Friday March 3, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
CBS Sports and Turner Sports’s annual coupling for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship now has its own teams locked in for this year’s event, with all 67 games televised across four national television networks TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV and via NCAA March Madness Live. Headlining the affair will be Jim Nantz, Grant Hill, Bill Raftery and reporter Tracy Wolfson, who handle this year’s NCAA Final Four National Semifinals on April 1 and National Championship on April 3. New commentator roles this round will include: Steve Lavin and Debbie Antonelli serving as game analysts; Casey Stern anchoring studio coverage from Atlanta; Adam Zucker providing all game updates from the New York studio; Lisa Byington joining as a reporter; and Brendan Haywood serving as studio analyst in Atlanta through the first weekend. Ernie Johnson and Greg Gumbel will again host studio coverage from New York City during the first full week of the tournament, joined by Charles Barkley, Clark Kellogg and Kenny Smith. Johnson hosts studio coverage from Atlanta during the second week of tournament action on Thursday and Friday.
The tournament will tips off on March 14-15 with the NCAA First Four on truTV presented by Northwestern Mutual. Brian Anderson calls Tuesday’s games with analyst Kellogg and reporter Lewis Johnson. Spero Dedes will handle play-by-play on Wednesday alongside analysts Smith and Len Elmore with reporter Ros Gold-Onwude.

NBC Sports Group and Notre Dame detailed plans for the 27th season of Notre Dame Football on NBC, beginning with the Fighting Irish hosting Temple Owls on Sept. 2 at 3:30p. Highlights this season will include primetime matchups with USC on Oct. 21 and Georgia on Sept. 9, both at 7:30p. Other games include: Miami (OH) on Sept. 30, at 5p on NBCSN; NC State on Oct. 28 at 3:30p; Wake Forest on Nov. 4 at 3:30p and Navy on Nov. 18 at 3:30p.
CBS Sports hits championship season with six basketball games this weekend, including one automatic bid. March 5 will see for the first time since 2011 the network carry Northwestern as they face Purdue. Jim Nantz is on the call with analysts Bill Raftery and Grant Hill with Tracy Wolfson handling sideline duties. At 2p, the Missouri Valley Conference Championship game airs at 2p. Saturday sees Texas A&M host Kentucky, followed by Notre Dame/Louisville with Arizona/Arizona State closing out the day’s action.
ESPN carries coverage of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships starting March 16, featuring three consecutive nights of prime-time coverage for the first time. Combined with ESPNU, all six sessions will be televised and ESPN will stream every mat, every match of the championship Primetime coverage begins with the second round on March 16 at 7p, while the semifinals and finals will air on ESPN on March 17-18 at 8p. Talent duties will include analysts Tim Johnson, Anthony Robles, Jim Gibbons, Lee Kemp and Billy Baldwin. Mike Couzens will call the action at the wrestling championships for the first time, handling all the prime-time sessions while Shawn Kenney returns to the coverage and will handle the play-by-play for the earlier rounds each day.
The HSBC Sevens World Series comes to NBCSN, NBC Sports.com, and the NBC Sports app starting tonight, marking the sole American event in the 2016-17 HSBC Sevens World Series. Coverage of the tournament will feature live coverage of full matches, as well as highlights from the three-day event. NBCSN’s live coverage begins at 7p and continues with live coverage on Saturday at 5:30p. Following pool play, NBCSN will show live coverage of the semifinals on Sunday at 3:30p and televise the final on Sunday night at midnight. Leigh Diffey will call the matches alongside Brian Hightower. Marty Snider will report from the sidelines.
FOX Sports is upgrading a pair of 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races to the FOX broadcast network. Races in Martinsville on April 1 and Pocono on July 29 will now join the Oct. 14 NCWTS race from Talladega on the FOX calendar.
Anthem Sports & Entertainment locked in a new broadcast deal for IMPACT Wrestling to be carried exclusively on Spike UK, making its flagship weekly show available throughout the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. New episodes of IMPACT Wrestling will premiere on Friday nights.
Alliance MMA is retaining Kings Highway Media for the purposes of domestic and international omni-channel media rights distribution. The partnership supports Alliance MMA’s focus on key revenue drivers including live events, content and sponsorships.
In local news, SNY debuts its new state-of-the-art studio facility located at the network’s new headquarters at 4 World Trade Center tonight at 10:30p with GEICO SportsNite. The production space, located on the 50th floor, totals 26,856 square feet and features three fully independent studios, two master control rooms and 360-degree views of the city. The three studios, designed by Jack Morton, encompass 3,700 square feet and combine for dozens of varying set locations utilizing 50 monitors.
Meanwhile, CSN New England announced a newly expanded programming line-up that will launch on April 3. As part of the new line-up, CSN will add a new nightly show Boston Sports Tonight every weeknight at 9p, hosted by CSN’s Tom Curran and Tom Giles, along with WEEI’s Michael Holley and Kayce Smith, while Arbella Early Edition expands to two hours at 6p.

World Rugby and Heineken extended ties for the beverage company to serve as a Worldwide Partner through Rugby World Cup 2019in Japan. The brand will also become an Official Partner of Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 and an Official Sponsor of the World Rugby Awards 2017 in Monaco on 26 November through the arrangement.
FOX Sports, via its FOX Sports Lab initiative, will deliver the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament in VR through the FOX Sports VR app, beginning with four quarterfinal games on March 9. In partnership with LiveLike and with presenting sponsorship from Jeep, the immersive, four-camera VR effort includes user-selected views, with two basket and two foul line cameras as well as original 360-degree tournament content. There also will be a live “director’s cut” which automatically moves viewer’s vantage points around the court to keep viewers in the middle of the action. Later, viewers can watch a tournament highlight package where users can choose replays from multiple vantage points.
Sling TV is adding NBC Regional Sports Networks to the streaming service in select markets. Viewers in California, Chicago and Mid-Atlantic markets will gain access to CSN California, CSN Bay Area, CSN Chicago, or CSN Mid-Atlantic networks to subscribers of the $25 Sling Blue package who live in eligible markets.
Twitter is partnering with ESL and DreamHack to live stream esports events and original content this year with a lineup that includes more than 15 events in the ESL One, Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) and DreamHack circuits. Coverage begins with Intel Extreme Masters Katowice on Saturday. Meanwhile, ESL will also produce live original content for Twitter, including a weekly 30-minute show featuring highlights and behind-the-scenes footage. All DreamHack events will also be live streamed, starting with DreamHack Austin in April. “Esports fans are endemic to digital and this partnership with Twitter expands ESL’s reach for all of our major tournaments for fans around the globe,” said Johannes Schiefer, Vice President Social Media & Editorial at ESL. “Intel Extreme Masters Katowice is our most anticipated live event, and we are excited to bring premier content from this tournament and beyond to more fans in a premium experience.”
Leger released its January 2017 Update on US Adults: Behavior Toward eSports, which notes that among adults 30-39, viewership is on the rise, with 30% having tuned in. Meanwhile, one in four adults overall say they would have a positive opinion of a brand if they advertised/sponsored an eSports event. Other notables include someone in the household watching eSports approaching to one-in-four; while one in six adults overall state they themselves have watched an eSports event.
