IN THE NEWS

Nielsen has agreed to be acquired by a private equity group led by Evergreen Coast Capital Corporation, an affiliate of Elliott Investment Management, and Brookfield Business Partners for $16 billion. Attwood, chairperson of Nielsen’s Board of Directors. The sale, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, is expected to close in the second half of 2022.

Mick Mulvaney has been named a contributor for CBS News, offering political analysis across platforms. Mulvaney previously held roles in the Trump administration, including acting White House chief of staff, and served as a congressman for South Carolina.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) has signed a first-look deal with Amazon Studios to develop and produce projects for Prime Video. “Carlton Cuse is a hitmaker whose track record and ability to imagine and create textured characters and worlds makes him a treasured talent,” said Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television, Amazon Studios. “The success of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ is an obvious reason for us at Amazon Studios to continue and grow our relationship with Carlton, but his continued vigor for storytelling makes us fortunate to work with this incredibly creative powerhouse.” Cuse has been under an overall deal with ABC Signature.

Apple TV+ ordered a series based on 2016 sci-fi novel Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. Joel Edgarton (“Revenge of the Sith”) is attached to an executive produce, with Crouch serving as writer and showrunner. Sony Pictures Television is producing.

Hallmark Channel has renewed family drama “Chesapeake Shores” for a sixth and final season. “With a top-notch ensemble cast and creative team, ‘Chesapeake Shores’ has shared stories that are relatable, poignant and unforgettable,” said Laurie Ferneau, SVP Programming, Series. “We look forward to honoring the journey viewers have been on with the O’Briens with one final, special season.”

Casting notes: Victoria Pedretti (“You”) landed the lead in Hulu psychological drama “Saint X.”…Wendi McLendon-Covey (“The Goldbergs”) will star in Disney+ movie “Prom Pact.”…Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) has been cast in ABC comedy pilot “Not Dead Yet,” about a newly-single journalist who takes a job writing obituaries.

All six episodes of FX limited series “Pistol,” about Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, drop Tuesday, May 31 on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The series is based on Jones’ 2017 memoir, Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol.

Season three of History’s “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” debuts Tuesday, May 3 at 10p, before moving to its regular timeslot of 9p. The nonfiction series focuses on a hotspot of paranormal and unidentified aerial phenomena.

Tyler, the Creator’s tour, “Call Me If You Get Lost,” kicked off in February.

Performing at the Ram Trucks Side Stage as part of the “CMT Music Awards” on Monday, April 11 at 8p, are Priscilla Block, BRELAND, Jessie James Decker, Parker McCollum, Elvie Shane and Caitlyn Smith. The awards show will be broadcast on CBS and stream on Paramount+.

TECH TALK

Enterprise software platform and data provider Whip Media announced the commercial launch of the Whip Media Exchange, a global licensing and research platform for film and TV content. The Whip Media Exchange predicts demand across film and TV titles while enabling buyers and sellers to distribute and acquire content rights. Buyers and sellers on the Whip Media Exchange include Lionsgate, Pluto TV, Globo, TelevisaUnivision’s ViX, AMC Networks International Latin America, Vodafone Hungary, Tastemade, and Keshet International, among others.

FreeWheel, a Comcast company has launched new self-service technology that will let buyers plan connected TV campaigns targeting custom audience segments while calculating their deduplicated reach in relation to linear TV. The solution will first be available to political advertisers. “As a result of fragmentation, audience-focused, multi-screen campaign planning is more important than ever,” said Dan Sinagoga, Head of Political Sales at Effectv. “These new tools are just what our clients had been waiting – and asking – for.”

Yahoo Finance has launched a cultural asset index onsite, offering investors insight on a different way to diversify their portfolios with cultural assets through a partnership with Pricing Culture. The new family of indices track cultural assets available for fractional ownership. “Diversifying a portfolio with cultural assets is continuing to drive interest with investors and it’s no surprise digital collectables are making headway across finance, sports and more,” said Joanna Lambert, President and General Manager, Consumer at Yahoo. “Yahoo is the first in the market to list a cultural asset index, furthering our mission to give investors the tools that they need to make wise decisions.”

STREAMING

CNN+ launched Tuesday, offering live news, on-demand programming and interactive interviews. How might the newcomer impact the streaming landscape? “There’s a lot of content and user experience optimization that takes place when a new streaming service first launches, especially on multiple platforms as is the case with CNN+,” says Eric John, VP, Media Center, IAB. “Once the content and user experience team optimizes the service for subscribers, I expect they’ll soon integrate advertising, informed by audience insights and real time capabilities to manage brand safety and brand suitability required by advertisers in news. First-mover brands that test and learn with the service will be able to capitalize on the scale in viewership that comes with breaking news.”

Two weeks after Netflix announced testing of monthly fees for password sharing in three territories outside the US, Leichtman Research Group released a survey of US subscribers indicating 33% of respondents share login credentials. Which is good and bad. “Password sharing is an inherent feature of most streaming services,” said Bruce Leichtman, President and Principal Analyst for LRG. “Sharing helps to expand the user base and retain customers, but it also creates a gap between the number of households that have a service and actual paying subscribers.”

Cinedigm has closed the acquisition of Digital Media Rights, the specialty streaming, advertising, and content distribution company. The acquisition scales up Cinedigm to more than 30 streaming services, 46,000 hours of content, 40 million monthly viewers, approximately 18.5 million social subscribers, and 4+ billion views. Cinedigm will now have 15 wholly-owned streaming services, which comprises more than 50% of its channel portfolio.

Chicken Soup for the Soul is now available on VIZIO. The streaming service will offer three thousand hours of at launch, including exclusive programming from Chicken Soup for the Soul original series like “Smart Home Nation.”

Among magazines, “Inside Edition” (2.1, down 9%) narrowly topped “Entertainment Tonight” (2.0, down 9%) and “Access Hollywood” (0.8, steady).

Fox News Channel finished the first quarter of 2022 as cable’s most-watched network in primetime and total day viewers, according to Nielsen. FNC also ranked number one in all of basic cable in total day viewers for the fourth quarter in a row and won every weekday hour with double- and triple-digit percent advantages, delivering 97 of the top 100 programs in cable news.

For the first time since launch, Fox Business Network’s “Kudlow” closed out the quarter as the highest-rated business news program on television, netting 286,000 total viewers, a 52% audience increase year over year.

Final Live+SD ratings for Sunday’s Oscars broadcast on ABC hit 16.6 million viewers and 3.8 among A18-49, up 58% in viewers and 73% in the demo from last year, but still the second least-watched ceremony ever. ABC noted the show was the “most social Oscars telecast on record,” with 22.7 million social interactions.

The premiere telecasts of Bounce original “Don’t Hang Up” on Sunday, March 20, were seen by nearly one million viewers 2+, making it the network’s most-watched original movie in its 10-year history. The thriller also improved its timeslot by +38% in P2+ viewers and by +30% in Households, P25-54, and P18-49 versus prior four-week averages.
