03/18/22: LIV Golf revealed its plans for a new circuit

Greg Norman and the new LIV Golf Invitational Series announced plans to launch in June with a slate of eight events around the world and dangling individual and team play prize money of $255 million to participants. The first event will take place in London at Centurion Golf Club from June 9-11. The first seven events will offer $20 million purses with an additional $5 million split among the top three teams each week. The events will feature 48 players and 12 four-man teams. The final event, Oct. 28-30 will serve as a team championship with $50 million in prize money. Stateside, events will take place in Portland, New Jersey, Boston and Chicago.

“I want golf to grow, players to have additional opportunities, and fans to have more fun,” Norman stated in the announcement. “My mission is to help the game reach its full potential and we know the role of golf as an entertainment product is critical to overall participation in the sport.

PROGRAMMING

ESPN unveiled its 2022 Sunday Night Baseball schedule, which begins on April 10, when the Yankees host the Red Sox. The Sunday Night Baseball game generally airs at 7p and is available on ESPN, ESPN Radio (with Jon “Boog” Sciambi and Doug Glanville), ESPN Deportes and the ESPN App. Baseball Tonight: Sunday Night Countdown precedes the game each week at 6p. The early slate featured three appearances by Yankees and the Phillies with a dozen MLB Clubs already scheduled for Sunday Night Baseball in the first several game selections.

NBC Sports reports that the 2022 Beijing Paralympics became the most-viewed Winter Paralympics in U.S. history, reaching nearly 12 million viewers across multiple NBCUniversal platforms. The 11.9 million total viewers is up 107% compared to the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympics. This year’s Paralympic Winter Games, which took place from March 4-13 in Beijing, China, averaged 165,000 TV-only viewers across NBC and USA Network, up 62% vs. PyeongChang 2018, according to Nielsen.

The National Women’s Soccer League revealed the full schedule for the upcoming 2022 regular season, which includes 12 teams set to compete in a single table, 22-match regular season with 11 home games and 11 away games per club. Each of the league’s 12 clubs will compete in opening weekend, starting April 29. The 2022 regular season will air across CBS and CBS Sports Network and stream live on Paramount+. Twitch, the home for all internationally streamed matches, will also stream select games in the United States.

MLB Network announced that Ruben Amaro, Jr., A.J. Andrews, Keiana Martin, Bo Porter and Siera Santos joined its lineup of on-air personalities appearing across the network’s studio programming. Amaro and Porter will serve as analysts, while Andrews, Martin and Santos join as hosts and reporters. As part of today’s announcement, Andrews has been named the new host of Play Ball, MLB Network’s weekly kids-focused program.

Combate Global kicks off a new year with 30 live television events with a six-fight, Mexico vs. USA-themed showdown on March 24, live on Univision at midnight. Combate Global also announced today that the anticipated new season of live events will include the use of open scoring for the first time in both Combate Global and Florida State history.

May 14 sees NBC debut “Pennzoil presents The Club,” a documentary featuring an exclusive conversation among four drivers who won the Indianapolis 500 four times. Airing at 2p, the program will lead into live coverage at 3p that afternoon of the GMR Grand Prix NTT INDYCAR SERIES race on the IMS road course.

ESPN formally debuted commentator Joe Buck and analyst Troy Aikman as new team members, courtesy of multi-year deals to become the new voices of Monday Night Football. In their two decades together, Buck and Aikman have called six Super Bowls, surpassing all other pairings/booths except for Summerall and Madden. As part of the agreement, Buck and Aikman will both contribute content to ESPN+, with more details to be announced at a later date.

Telemundo’s Spanish-language presentation of Liga MX’s Super Clásico delivered an average of 1.9 million total viewers and 938,000 adults 18-49 during the match window, with an additional record-setting 45,000 digital streams outperforming last year’s Super Clásico by 47% in streams.

Genius Sports announced a collaboration with ESPN for the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship using AI-powered tracking data and live video augmentations. Esports tournament organizer PGL will host the last major of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit 2021-2022 in Arlington, becoming the first Dota 2 major in North America since 2016. The event will run Aug. 4-14 as 18 Dota 2 teams battle it out for a share of its $500,000 prize pool.
