IN THE NEWS
Disney+ has surpassed 100 million global paid subscribers in the 16 months since its launch, Bob Chapek, CEO, The Walt Disney Company, announced during yesterday’s annual meeting of shareholders – and that success has prompted the company to ramp up their investment in the development of high-quality content. “We set a target of 100+ new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic,” said Chapek. “Our direct-to-consumer business is the Company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth.” At launch, Disney had projected it would reach 60-90 million subscribers by 2024.
Piers Morgan quit UK breakfast show “Good Morning Britain” after backlash following his on-air comments about Meghan Markle. Among other things, Morgan said he didn’t believe the duchess had had suicidal thoughts, as she claimed in her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, and walked off the set when rebuked by a co-host for his remarks. Morgan later returned to the set and acknowledged that while he had “serious concerns about the veracity” of Markle’s claims, “it’s not for me to question if she felt suicidal.” Asked about Morgan’s behavior during an earnings call, ITV CEO Carolyn McCall said the network “is dealing with it as we speak.” Shortly afterward, ITV announced, “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave ‘Good Morning Britain.’ ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
Four episodes into its freshman run, CBS renewed “The Equalizer” for season two. “’The Equalizer’ has proven more than equal to the task of engaging viewers and racking up wins on Sunday night,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “We’re extremely proud to see this outstanding broadcast drama, led by Queen Latifah, punch through the competitive landscape and return for a second season.” The reboot is averaging 14.6 million viewers.
“Dan Brown’s Langdon,” based on Brown’s novel The Last Symbol, landed a series order from Peacock. The drama, produced by CBS Studios, Imagine Television Studios and Universal Television, was ordered to pilot by NBC last year before moving to its streaming sib. “The team was blown away by this pilot and its enormous potential to become a big, binge-worthy hit, and our new structure enables us to move it to Peacock and give it every opportunity to make that happen,” said Susan Rovner, Chairman, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “Our ability to pick up a great show is no longer limited by the confines of a network schedule, giving us the freedom to say ‘yes’ to shows we love and then find them the perfect home across our portfolio.”
BuzzFeed is cutting the staff of newly-acquired HuffPost by 47 employees in the US, and closing its Canada office. Hillary Frey, executive editor of HuffPost, and Louise Roug, executive editor for international, will exit the company. BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti told employees that while BuzzFeed is profitable, HuffPost’s losses topped $20 million last year, “and we don’t have the resources to support another two years of losses.”
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association – facing outrage over that fact that it has no Black members – made a hire in an attempt to start rectifying the situation. Dr. Shaun Harper, Executive Director of USC Race and Equity Center, has been named Strategic Diversity Advisor, charged with reviewing the group’s internal policies, conducting anti-racism and unconscious bias training for its members, and developing a multi-year diversity and inclusion strategy. “We understand the importance of building a more inclusive organization and becoming more transparent in our operations, and these hires are an important first step,” said the HFPA.

TECH TALK
Twitter filed a lawsuit Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, asking the a judge to halt him from investigating the social media company. Paxton, who sent the investigation demand to Twitter after it banned then-President Trump from its platform, is among Texas Republicans who launched a campaign against tech companies in the wake of the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Twitter accused Paxton of “unlawfully abusing his authority as the highest law-enforcement officer of the State of Texas to intimidate, harass, and target Twitter in retaliation for Twitter’s exercise of its First Amendment rights.”
DistroScale announced its new DistroTV Platform Services unit, aimed at lowering the barrier to entry for media brands interested in creating, monetizing and distributing their own streaming TV channels. “Channel creation used to only be accessible to content owners with big budgets and infrastructure,” said Navdeep Saini, co-founder and CEO of DistroTV. “Given how quickly streaming has evolved from a niche to a standard media consumption platform, we saw a need to create a solution that would reduce any perceived cost, complexity and risk barriers that were preventing media brands from making the leap to OTT.”
IAB is focusing its AI Standards Working Group to develop AI standards, best practices, use cases, and terminologies. “AI is the only technology that can keep up with the petabytes of data that are the hallmark of successful digital marketing playbooks today,” said Angelina Eng, Vice President, Measurement & Attribution, Programmatic+Data Center, IAB. “But AI should not be blindly trusted. The IAB AI Standards Working Group is helping define the groundwork and best practices the industry needs to ensure privacy, measurement, and addressability. Ultimately, this will lead to creating agreed-upon standards.” The guide includes nine use cases spanning internal robotic process automation and data migration for agencies to AI use cases for creative, contextual, video, and beyond.
IAB Tech Lab is opening to industry comment several technical specifications and best practices, designed to be pragmatic, secure, scalable, supportive of marketplace innovation, and enablers of conformity to data transparency standards across the advertising ecosystem. The Accountability Platform helps ensure that all supply chain participants can consistently prove that they are adhering to user preferences, while the Global Privacy Platform specification builds on prior standards to ensure that user data is passed in a safe and transparent manner. “Predictable user privacy – across platforms and devices – can only be achieved through open standards where all stakeholders have a say at the table,” said Jordan Mitchell, SVP, Head of Consumer Privacy, Identity and Data, IAB Tech Lab. “This foundation must be established and provide transparency and control to users. It must not only comply with consumers’ preferences, but it must also consistently demonstrate that compliance.”

He was an inspiration to all of us in the bureau. On a personal note – I sat directly across from him in the D.C. newsroom – Roger was big, not just in his physical presence but he was larger than life.”
