John Malone and the Charter Communications board agreed to an $87.5 million settlement to resolve an investor’s lawsuit accusing Malone of unfairly benefiting from Charter’s $79 billion purchase of Time-Warner in 2015. The defendants denied wrongdoing, but said they agreed to the proposed settlement to “avoid the burden, expense, disruption, and distraction of further litigation.”

Paramount Global is exploring the idea of selling a majority stake in BET Media Group, and Tyler Perry is interested, reports The Wall Street Journal. Perry owns a minority stake in streamer BET+, and produces numerous programs (“House of Payne,” “Sisters,” and “The Oval,” among others) for the group. BET Media also includes the BET network and studio, and VH1. BET was founded in 1980 by Robert Johnson and acquired by Viacom in 2001.

Filmmaker Alex Gibney (“Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room”) announced that he’s months into the making of “Musk,” an examination of multi-billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. Jigsaw Productions is producing the film alongside Closer Media, Anonymous Content, and Double Agent. For Jigsaw Productions, Gibney and Jessie Deeter produce the film with Stacey Offman and Richard Perello executive producing. Joey Marra and Zhang Xin produce on behalf of Closer Media with William Horberg executive producing. Bryan Cogman (“Game of Thrones”) has joined the revival of “Zorro,” in development at Disney+, as writer, showrunner and executive producer. Wilmer Valderrama stars as the swashbuckling hero, in a “bold reimagining” of the 1957-59 series.

GroupM Motion Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery are teaming to support GroupM’s Diverse Voices Accelerator, a positive impact initiative that supports creators, writers, producers, directors and studios from traditionally underrepresented groups in entertainment. Series developed through the DVA will be available across Warner Bros. Discovery networks and platforms.

The fall from grace of pop star-turned-prisoner Gary Glitter will be the subject of Netflix doc “Hunting Gary Glitter” (wt), from Voltage Films. Glitter was sent to the slammer in 1999 for downloading child pornography, was convicted of child sexual abuse in 2006 and a series of sexual offenses in 2015.

Media company Macro announced a $90+ million investment through accounts managed by BlackRock. “Macro has an established track record of producing premium, award-winning TV and film content focused on people of color, which has historically been short in supply but high in demand,” said Pam Chan, Chief Investment Officer & Global Head, BlackRock’s Alternative Solutions Group. “We are pleased to make this investment on behalf of our clients.”

Argentinian soccer star Leo Messi is developing an animated series with Sony Music Entertainment. The series will center on Messi as a child as he travels through a video game.

Unscripted casting executive and producer Chelsey Stephens has launched development and casting company Chelsey Creative Inc. Stephens was previously SVP of Talent and Development at Truly Original.

ABC is in talks with Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) to star in a comedy pilot based on a British series. “Motherland,” from Merman Television, Feigco Entertainment, Lionsgate and ABC Signature, centers on a working mom for whom nothing is working.

Lesley-Ann Brandt (“Lucifer”) will recur on AMC’s upcoming “The Walking Dead” spinoff starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

TBS’ “American Dad” is back for season 18 on Monday, March 27 at 10p. The voice cast includes Seth MacFarlane, Wendy Schaal, Scott Grimes, Rachael MacFarlane, Jeff Fischer, Dee Bradley Baker, and Patrick Stewart, along with special guests, Pete Davidson, Anjelica Houston, Jason Alexander, Jaleel White, Chris Sullivan, Ann Dowd, Amy Sedaris, Alan Tudyk, Alyson Hannigan and Simon Helberg.

Canela Media announced new programming for soccer fans on Canela.TV’s sports- focused vertical Canela Deportes. “100% Futbol” will air live three times per week on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday on Canela.TV, starting today, March 7.

NewsNation political ensemble program “The Hill” makes its debut Monday, April 24 at 5p. NewsNation veteran anchor and correspondent, Leland Vittert will serve as moderator.

Season 7 of The Weather Channel’s “Heavy Rescue: 401” launches Sunday, March 12 at 9p, followed by the return of “Uncharted Adventure” at 10p. Ahead of the premieres, the network is airing a Heavy Duty Week marathon, with “Heavy Rescue: 401” episodes starting at 8p.

TelevisaUnivision’s 8th annual “Latin American Music Awards” are set to take place Thursday, April 20 at 7p from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. The main show and pre-show “Noche de Estrellas” will broadcast on Univision, UNIMÁS, and Galavisión.

Musician Lenny Kravitz will perform during the “In Memoriam” segment at the 95th Oscars, airing Sunday, March 12 at 8p on ABC.

The ABC Owned Television Stations are celebrating Women’s History Month with a multiplatform slate of relevant content. Offerings include special “Our America: Women on a Roll,” hosted by Tamron Hall, highlighting diverse women and girls making a difference in their neighborhoods.

Turner Classic Movies will celebrate the life and career of Gina Lollabrigida on Tuesday, May 2, starting at 8p with the 1961 film, “Come September.” Lollabrigida died January 16 at age 95.

STREAMING

Cinedigm is partnering with J. Alexander Martin, founder of the fashion brand FUBU, and producer Roberto “Rush” Evans, to launch the For Us By Us Network. The new service will feature movies, and content around issues, personalities and trends related to the hip-hop culture and lifestyle. The service will utilize Cinedigm’s Matchpoint technology platform to power the full service, making FUBU one of the first brands to leverage the Matchpoint platform on a SaaS basis.

The AKC is diving into the streaming pool. Dog-related programming on the group’s FAST channel, just launched on Plex, incudes “Meet the Breeds,” “Ask the Expert,” “AKC Dogcenter” and more.

SiriusXM is laying off 475 employees, or 8% of its workforce. The company needs to “think differently about how our organization is structured,” said CEO Jennifer Witz in a memo to staff.

TECH TALK

DoubleVerify announced the launch of Authentic Direct, a solution allowing publishers to align with advertiser brand suitability on direct campaigns. The tool eliminates impression waste cause by brand suitability violations.

OpenAP on behalf of the U.S. Joint Industry Committee announced the publication of its initial requirements for premium video cross-platform currencies, requirements that are needed for all cross-platform currencies to be transactional. Buyers and sellers will have an equal voice in defining the criteria that will be used to evaluate measurement solutions. “We believe that if we’re going to transform the way video is measured, the buying community must have a seat at the table in defining new standards,” said David Levy, CEO of OpenAP. “By reaching consensus on minimum requirements within this ambitious timeline, we are together demonstrating the significance and impact of industry-wide collaboration.”

Omnichannel ad exchange Sharethrough and media quality measurement provider Adelaide have teamed to launch an attention-based curated inventory. Adelaide will be able to measure millions of impressions across Sharethrough’s inventory and generate an AU (Attention Unit) rating for each placement. Adelaide’s AU is a precise measure of a placement’s likelihood of driving attention and impact. The offering will be available to Sharethrough customers through high-AU PMPs (private marketplace).

Twitter was hit with (more) outages and glitches on Monday, with the website inaccessible for some users, while others ran into error messages. Tweeted Elon Musk, “This platform is so brittle (sigh). Will be fixed shortly.” It was third glitch in as many weeks.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Comcast is not planning on taking over the regional sports networks Warner Bros. Discovery plans to shutter, according to Sports Business Journal. With teams that are carried by WBD’s AT&T Sports Nets, the MLB, NBA and NHL reportedly reached out to Comcast, which has TV stations in the markets being abandoned, but Comcast wasn’t interested in running the RSNs. Major League Baseball is preparing for the RSN challenge by starting its own local media department.

The Arena Group Holdings and its sports vertical, Sports Illustrated Media Group, are partnering with four properties to grow and expand the publisher’s existing coverage across professional football, college sports, wrestling, and mixed martial arts. The media properties – AtoZ Sports, College Football News, MMA News and SE Scoops – will utilize The Arena Group’s platform capabilities.

Japan’s Nippon TV will head to MIPTV with a new scripted format, “Rebooting” and a new unscripted format, “Doki Doki Video.”

GRB will distribute The Nacelle Company’s first scripted animated series, “Robo Force,” based on the 1980’s toy line; and has secured multiples sales for their unscripted docuseries “Icons Unearthed.”

London-based Sandbox Group has partnered with Alpha Group on a new Super Wings™ educational app for kids ages 3 and up. The app will be developed by Spain-based company, Edujoy, that is part of the Sandbox Group’s Gaming arm.

Canada’s Sinking Ship Entertainment announced new sales. TVP in Poland has acquired sci-fi conservation series “Endlings”; SKY in the UK has picked up puppet series “Playdate; ejunior has renewed “Odd Squad” and acquired “Alma’s Way”; CBC in Canada has acquired the first two seasons of “Odd Squad” for CBC Gem; and “Dino Dana” is headed to NHK in Japan.
