03/06/19: NASCAR saw viewership spikes for its Vegas trip

Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 6, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports saw Vegas give a lift to its NASCAR coverage, reporting that Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race drew an average viewership of more than 5.1 million, up 8% over its 2018 score, according to Nielsen, with the race pulling a 3.0/7. The NASCAR race ranked as the most-watched sports event of the weekend for the third-straight week, led by Greensboro’s 10.9, with Greenville (8.0), Charlotte (7.4), Richmond (7.3) and Indianapolis (7.2) rounding out the top five.

ESPN cemented a deal with New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia to serve in a variety of roles beginning this season, although Sabathia recently announced that he would retire from the Yankees following the 2019 season. Sabathia will contribute analysis to various ESPN platforms this season, including on SportsCenter, Get Up!, First Take, Golic & Wingo and occasionally Baseball Tonight. In addition, he will periodically join ESPN Radio New York as a guest host on the Humpty & Canty show.
Meanwhile ESPN broadcaster Jessica Mendoza was hired by the Mets as a baseball operations advisor. She will, however, continue her role calling Sunday Night Baseball while in the role. “Jessica is incredibly well-respected throughout the industry and we are excited to bring her into the organization,” said Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen. “She is a world-class athlete and experienced television analyst with an extremely high baseball IQ. We are confident that she will help us in our efforts to win now and in the future. This hire demonstrates the continued support from ownership to invest in the intellectual capital of the New York Mets.”
ESPN is ramping up its coverage across TV and the ESPN app of the BNP Paribas Open from Indian Wells, starting Wednesday. ESPN3 on the ESPN app will offer more matches and hours of competition than ever before, with fans having access to up to nine courts simultaneously and a total of more than 600 hours, featuring all ATP and WTA matches not on an ESPN TV network. The TV schedule of 25 live hours (up from 21) begins March 13, and includes the men’s semifinals on ABC on March 16, and the women’s and men’s championships in an ESPN2 doubleheader on March 17.
BTN’s week-long coverage of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament presented by SoFi on March 11, will include the tournament’s first 10 game broadcasts, a studio presence and a talented lineup of broadcasters and analysts on-site for the finale of the Big Ten season. The broadcast pairings feature veteran play-by-play voices and analysts, including a Friday evening trio of Brian Anderson (play-by-play), Bill Raftery (analyst) and Andy Katz (sideline). Brandon Gaudin (play-by-play), Shon Morris (analyst) and Mike Hall (sideline) will handle duties for opening night in the United Center, with the first game tipping off at 6:30p on Wednesday.
TNT is adding coverage of the inaugural season for The Alliance of American Football and will now include two more games to its upcoming programing lineup. The network will televise Orlando’s game against the Birmingham Iron on Saturday at 2p, in addition to their games against the Atlanta Legends on March 23, at 2p. In addition to the TNT presentation, B/R Live will provide a live companion experience exclusively using the “Skycam” view of the action.  The alternative perspective of the live action will allow audiences to see top-down and 360-degree panoramic views of both games.
The Professional Fighters League unveiled the first of three rounds of roster selections for the 2019 season, lining up nine returning finalists from their respective weight divisions, including five of the 2018 PFL World Champions. All ten PFL events will air live across ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+, with up to three hours of exclusive action live on ESPN+ and up to two exclusive hours live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes. Regular season action will take place on Thursday nights. Additionally, fights will be distributed to 130 plus countries around the world on premium linear and digital sports networks. 2019 will again feature six weight divisions, including the first-ever Women’s 155 lbs Lightweight division.
Olympic Channel docu-reality series The Z Team opened a new season featuring  Olympic legends from around the world who have just one week to turn around a struggling youth team. In the first episode, Olympic gold medalist and “Dream Team” member, Duke University basketball legend and former NBA star Christian Laettner coaches the Garinger High School boys’ varsity basketball team in Charlotte, North Carolina. Drawing from his collegiate and 13-year NBA career, “he uses his coaching skills and famous no-nonsense attitude to help the 3-14 team prepare for their next game.”
NBA Digital‘s fourth Players Only Films installment is now available exclusively on Facebook Watch, examining “how women in and around the NBA are blazing a new trail and impacting the game.” IN THE LEAGUE profiles a series of successful women holding a variety of prominent roles, including Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, NBA referee Lauren Holtkamp, Washington Wizards TV analyst Kara Lawson and NBPA executive director Michele Roberts. The National Lacrosse League unlocked a partnership with GEICO as the official insurance designation of the NLL. The National Basketball Association and Rakuten, Inc. announced that the Toronto Raptors and the Houston Rockets will play two preseason games in Japan in October 2019. The NBA Japan Games 2019 Presented by Rakuten will take place Oct. 8 and Oct. 10 at Saitama Super Arena and will mark the league’s 13th and 14th games in Japan. The NBA Japan Games 2019 Presented by Rakuten will be supported by a roster of marketing and merchandising partners. In addition to the games, the league and its partners will conduct interactive fan activities and NBA Cares community outreach events that will bring the NBA experience to fans in Japan.

fuboTV announced that the company be the first live TV streaming service to bring fans NCAA college hoops in 4K Beta with next week’s tip-off of the Big Ten and Big East championships. In addition, this year marks the first time fuboTV will carry the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in full.

Top esports org Cloud9 locked in a deal with AT&T, marking the first team to receive sponsorship from the telecommunications giant in a move to “grow its relationships with new and existing customers” via an increased presence in esports. Later this year, Cloud9 will launch production on a new, weekly digital show providing team highlights, player profiles, a look at upcoming tournaments and other esports news from across the Cloud9 organization and its partners . AT&T will be the presenting sponsor of this new series called “The Nines.” Fans can catch the series on Cloud9’s digital platforms. “Teaming up with a company like AT&T, who has always prided itself on being ahead of the curve, is a tremendous moment for the whole C9 organization,” said Jack Etienne, CEO & Owner of Cloud9. “With what AT&T is bringing us, we’re going to be able to bring the fans so much more – more content, more access, more memes, and more championships. The NBA 2K League will launch its second season next month with a new deal with Raynor Gaming, a brand in the seating industry and now the official gaming chair partner of the NBA 2K League. NBA 2K League-branded chairs will first be featured at the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft and, throughout the season, all team training rooms in the NBA 2K League Studio Powered by Intel will also be equipped with Raynor chairs.  Raynor Gaming is currently a partner of both 76ers GC and Cavs Legion GC.
Allied Esports and HyperX announced the addition of Allied Esports’ two European properties to their international naming rights partnership. Allied Esports’ European mobile arena, nicknamed “Big Betty,” has joined the HyperX Esports Truck brand, while its production and broadcast facility located in Hamburg, Germany has been renamed the HyperX Studio. The agreement follows two previous naming rights announcements between the companies for HyperX Esports Arena Las Vegas, Allied Esports’ global flagship arena, and the North American HyperX Esports Truck, nicknamed “Big Meta.”

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany announced that he would step away from the role on June 30, 2020, when his current contract expires. Delany has led the Big Ten since 1989. According to the AP, Delany said he intends to help with the transition, but does not anticipate being part of the selection process for his replacement. The Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors have already started a search for a new commissioner led by Northwestern President Morton Schapiro.
La Vida Baseball, an English speaking Latino baseball digital media company, announced that it has hired Siera Santos as on-air talent and content producer. As the first on-air talent to join the company in its third year, Santos will have a prominent role in all LVB content creation, including hosting a daily live show in development which will be distributed across all major social media platforms. LVB further expanded its operations with the addition of Jose de Jesus Ortiz as editor and senior writer.
