03/05/19: WarnerMedia confirmed a Turner split, with Jeff Zucker taking Turner Sports

Good morning. It’s Tuesday March 5, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
WarnerMedia made the news official, announcing a reorganization that would see a reshuffling that includes Turner Sports moving under the eye of Jeff Zucker, who becomes Chairman, WarnerMedia News & Sports, and President, CNN. WarnerMedia will organize its teams around entertainment networks, live programming, content production and affiliate and advertising sales. WarnerMedia News & Sports will include CNN Worldwide (CNN, CNN.com, CNN International, CNN en Espanol, HLN, Great Big Story), Turner Sports, Bleacher Report and the AT&T Regional Sports Networks. The company will also consolidate all WarnerMedia Affiliates and Advertising Sales Groups under one unified structure led by Gerhard Zeiler.

ESPN picked up rights to bring Spanish-speaking Major League Soccer coverage to Latin America and the Caribbean in a four-year deal. ESPN will carry all of the league’s 408 regular-season matches, the All-Star Game, all of the MLS Cup Playoffs, in addition to the MLS Cup, replacing FOX Sports Latin America in the region, with games set to air live on ESPN linear networks across Spanish-speaking Latin America and the Caribbean, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPN Caribbean, and ESPN Play, ESPN’s multiscreen live and on-demand broadband service in the region. In addition, ESPN will air highlight programs.
NBC Sports Group saw golf coverage score its most-watched February ever, averaging a Total Audience Delivery of 142,000 viewers-per-minute in Total Day numbers. Overall, 26.3 million unique viewers tuned into golf coverage across NBC Sports in February, driven by PGA TOUR coverage on NBC delivering its most-watched February in 11 Years, according to Nielsen. “Following GOLF Channel’s most-watched year in 2018, February’s record viewership shows that the golf season is heating back up on GOLF Channel and NBC,” said Mike McCarley, president, GOLF, NBC Sports. “This momentum will continue as the sport’s new schedule builds with THE PLAYERS’ return to March – the first of six championship events over the next six straight months.”
CBS announced the group of elite athletes, known as “Defenders,” whose mission is to chase down contestants and stop them from winning the $1,000,000 prize in the physical competition series Million Dollar Mile, debuting on March 27 at 9p on CBS. Each contestant will receive a two-minute headstart and have the chance to win $1 million, with a group of 10 athletes on deck, including a Green Beret and “Army Athlete of the Year,” the most decorated Obstacle Course Race (OCR) athlete in history, and a two-time Guinness World Record holder for both the farthest and highest wall flips. Competitors hold titles in some of the toughest races, including: Kona Ironman World Championships, Tough Mudder X, CrossFit Games, Spartan World Championships and more. The show is hosted by former college football champion, Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow with Matt “Money” Smith and Maria Taylor serving as commentators.
Tennis Channel’s 2019 BNP Paribas Open coverage in Indian Wells opens with a new one-set tournament led by Rafael Nadal. The Eisenhower Cup, “Rafa and Friends” event will air live at 10:30p. From March 5-31, the channel will offer daylong match blocks, all-night encores, more than 240 hours of live coverage and more than 540 total during a month-long celebration of two of the biggest, most prestigious events in the sport.
NBC Sports offers fans the sounds and passion of hockey with a one-hour special titles Wired: Stadium Series – Penguins vs. Flyers tonight at 11p on NBCSN. The program will utilize audio from a total of 12 players, coaches and referees from the Philadelphia Flyers’ 4-3 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2019 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game.

For the first time, the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held in Las Vegas, with Pac-12 Networks offering fans coverage of 10 of the 11 Tournament matchups from March 7-10. In addition, leading into the Tournament, Pac-12 Networks is set to air the Women’s Basketball Awards today at 5p PT. The yearly honors for Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, John R. Wooden Coach of the Year, and Sixth Player of the Year will be announced on-air during the 60-minute show.
Meanwhile. BTN announced coverage plans for the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament, running March 8-10 and ending with the championship game on March 23/24. The quarterfinal series will be available via streaming platforms and on select FOX Sports regional networks, while the semifinals and championship rounds will air live on BTN, BTN2Go and the FOX Sports app. The championship game will run on BTN, the FOX Sports app and BTN2Go.
FloSports announced a multiyear partnership with the United Country Western Dance Council to provide live and on-demand coverage of UCWDC events, including the Country Dance World Championships through 2023 on FloDance.com. The upcoming schedule kicks off with the Calgary Dance Stampede from April 11-14.

Secret Deodorant announced its partnership with the US Women’s National Soccer Team which will span 2019 and the Women’s World Cup. Marking the launch of the alliance, Secret has debuted “Cheer for Each Other,” the newest video in its “All Strength, No Sweat” line-up. PUBG detailed the roadmap for qualifying into the top international competitions in PUBG esports for 2019. Opening with the FACEIT Global Summit: PUBG Classic, the first global event on the calendar and will include 24 teams from around the world starting April 16. At the end of Phase 2, top teams from Europe/Middle East/Africa, North America, Latin America, and Oceania will participate in a second PUBG Classic event. To fill out the field of 16 teams, five will come from North America; five will come from Europe/Middle East/Africa, and Oceania and Latin America will send three teams apiece. The third PUBG Classic will run after Phase 2 as well, bringing five pro teams from China, four from Korea, three from Southeast Asia, and two each from Japan and Chinese Taipei/Hong Kong/Macau. 32 teams will then qualify into the PUBG Global Championship, including four each from China, Korea, North America, and Europe/Middle East/Africa along with 11 more from Southeast Asia, Chinese Taipei/Hong Kong/Macau, Japan, Latin America, and Oceania. The NBA 2K League announced the pool of 198 players who will be eligible for the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft taking place today at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. All 21 teams will complete their six-person roster at the four-round draft, which will begin at 5p, livestreamed on the league’s Twitch channel. This year’s draft pool includes 22 international players from nine countries outside the U.S.: Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, New Zealand, the Philippines, Spain, and the United Kingdom. With the addition of four expansion teams, 126 players will compete in the NBA 2K League’s second season, and new this year, the number of draft-eligible players will exceed the spots available in the league through the draft.
