03/04/22: The WTA scored its biggest deal in org history

The WTA made history via a new partnership with Hologic to serve as the global title sponsor of the WTA Tour in a deal described as the largest global sponsorship in tour history. Hologic will now be integrated into the WTA across all platforms, including net signage at all WTA tournaments and virtual advertising at WTA 1000 and 500 events. As the official health partner of the WTA, Hologic becomes the founding partner of Hologic WTA Labs, a WTA initiative focused on health innovation and research-based projects specific to female athletes. Hologic and the WTA also stated that they plan to announce more joint activities in the coming months,

“From the start, we knew Hologic was the right partner,” said WTA President Micky Lawler. “As we embark on a new era of women breaking barriers and understanding how imperative our health is to reach our full potential, Hologic joins the WTA family at a pivotal time. Reflecting on the passion we both share for women’s equality around the world, I look forward to the meaningful change this partnership will spark for our athletes, sport, and fans.”

PROGRAMMING

The WNBA’s 26th regular season will tip off on May 6, and feature 25 national broadcasts during the regular season across ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2. The league will also partner with Google and Disney Networks to showcase as many as 52 games beginning with the regular season and extending through the recently-expanded postseason, which would include up to 27 games. The complete television and streaming schedule, including a combined 40 games on CBS Television Network and CBS Sports Network, as well as additional offerings from NBA TV, Prime Video, and Facebook Watch will be unveiled at a later date. The ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 broadcast schedule gets underway on Saturday, May 7, with the Liberty/Sun. A WNBA record-tying high nine regular-season games are slated for broadcast on ABC, including the presentation of doubleheaders on each of the final two weekends of the regular season when teams will be vying for playoff contention and positioning. In addition, five games will air on ESPN and 10 on ESPN2.

Organizers of the Winter Paralympics on Thursday opted to deepen its separation from Russia and Belarus by expelling their athletes from the Games. The news comes less than 24 hours after the International Paralympic Committee announced it would allow Russians and Belarusians to compete when the Games open Friday but only as neutral athletes with colors, flags and other national symbols

Mike Tirico hosts a special 30-minute 2022 Paralympic Winter Games preview show this morning at 6:30a on USA Network and Peacock, leading into live coverage of the Opening Ceremony at 7a. The program, marking the first-ever pre-Opening Ceremony show for the Paralympics, will introduce viewers to the upcoming competition with a special focus on Team USA and the significance of the Paralympic movement while addressing the complicated global issues facing the Games. Ahmed Fareed will host coverage of the Opening Ceremony with Chris Waddell.

The NFL and Nielsen collaborated on a survey to complement Nielsen’s measurement data in a move to better understand how many people may have watched Super Bowl LVI, particularly in group settings. Based on the survey findings, an estimated 208 million-plus viewers watched the game, representing approximately two-thirds of the entire population of the United States and 25% more than the 167 million unique viewers who watched at least one minute of the game based on Nielsen’s initial measurement.

TUDN saw its coverage of the 2022 MLS Opening Day match pitting LAFC/Colorado Rapids on February 26 reach 344,000 to mark an audience growth of +70% vs. the overall performance from 2021. That also marked the best performance for the league on the channel since 2019.

When Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski takes the court for his final home game at Cameron Indoor Stadium tomorrow, ESPN lined up a multi-platform presentation of the Blue Devils’ regular-season finale against North Carolina. The Sonic Blockbuster and Saturday Primetime presented by H&R Block airs at 6p on ESPN with the commentator crew of Dan Shulman, Jay Bilas and Holly Rowe. In addition to the traditional game telecast, ESPN will have expansive coverage across its networks, studio shows and digital platforms as Krzyzewski leads his team onto the court that bears his name for the last time, now in his 46th and final season.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s morning debate show First Take is up 22% from 2021 with an average of 445,000 viewers, according to the network. In addition, last month’s viewership marks First Take’s most-watched month of Feb. since 2018.

NBC Sports Chicago and NBC Sports Philadelphia are partnering with PointsBet to present BetCast, an alternate live game sports-betting experience, covering the Bulls/76ers NBA matchup on March 7, at 7p. The Bulls-76ers BetCast marks NBC Sports Regional Networks’ first dual-market sports betting telecast and will be presented on NBC Sports Chicago Plus and NBC Sports Philadelphia Plus and will deliver on-screen live odds data along with futures odds and player props. The real-time data will appear on an enhanced graphic overlay surrounding the regular live-game coverage.

Skydance Sports and Religion of Sports announced an expansive partnership to develop, finance and produce a slate of sports-related content for multiple platforms, with projects across scripted television, documentary and audio. The first project in development is “The Owl,” a scripted story about an orphaned, American-born boxer with Mexican lineage who travels across the border to locate his family and is thrust into the world of Mexican boxing.

Comcast Business hits year two of its PGA TOUR sponsorship with the launch of the Comcast Business Pavilion, described as a “first-of-its kind PGA TOUR experience specifically designed to allow businesses to stay connected while on the course.” The Comcast Business Pavilion will launch next week at the TOUR’s flagship event in Ponte Vedra Beach and will be featured at six additional PGA TOUR tournaments throughout 2022.

Yahoo Sports signed two college basketball stars to NIL deals in support of its Yahoo Sports Tourney Pick’em bracket game, marking the first time a NIL deal has been inked with college athletes in support of bracket gaming. Paolo Banchero, freshman at Duke University and Chet Holmgren, freshman at Gonzaga University will serve as co-ambassadors of the activation, including social and digital content amplification across their personal social media channels

Sportradar Integrity Services released a new report, Betting Corruption and Match-fixing in 2021, detailing the detection of a record number of suspicious matches as the amount of money bet on sports reached record heights in 2021. Sportradar’s bet-monitoring service, the Universal Fraud Detection System, uncovered suspicious activity in 903 matches last year, across 10 sports and in 76 countries worldwide. It is the highest number of suspicious matches recorded in Sportradar Integrity Services’ 17-year history — a 2.4% increase.

The United States Football League announced that 15 states from across the country have authorized licensed sports wagering operators to accept wagers on the new league. The states include Iowa, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, which require state regulatory approval of new leagues, and Connecticut, Delaware, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The USFL recently announced Sportradar as the League’s Official Sports Data and Integrity Partner.

RealResponse, the feedback, monitoring and anonymous reporting platform for athletic teams and organizations, announced a pair of partnerships with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, becoming the first two NFL teams to offer the platform to its employees. Both will use the system to proactively stay in communication with employees regarding feedback on areas impacting their wellbeing.
