03/02/22: Turner Sports landed a long-term deal with US Soccer

Turner Sports continues to crank up its sports offerings, this time locking in a deal with the U.S. Soccer Federation for an eight-year multimedia rights agreement that will make TNT/TBS and HBO Max the exclusive English-language home to more than 20 Women’s and Men’s National Team matches each year. The deal begins in 2023 and will also include digital and highlight rights for Bleacher Report and its portfolio brands, among additional content opportunities throughout the WarnerMedia portfolio. HBO Max will live stream more than 20 United States National Soccer Team matches each year. TNT or TBS will televise approximately half of those matches.

“This is a significant milestone for Turner Sports and WarnerMedia, further demonstrating our commitment to the distribution of premium live sports content on HBO Max, while simultaneously fueling our leading entertainment networks, digital and social assets,” said Lenny Daniels, President, Turner Sports. “We’re excited to spotlight one of the most popular Women’s teams in the world, along with an ascending Men’s National Team, over the eight years of this agreement. This partnership offers us an opportunity to engage with their avid, young and diverse fan bases through all of our Turner Sports and Bleacher Report platforms.”

PROGRAMMING

With CBA talks still unresolved, Major League Baseball scratched opening day, as commissioner Rob Manfred state that he is canceling the first two series of the season, which was slated to begin March 31, and the season schedule now dropping from 162 games to – at most – 156 games at most. Manfred said the league and union have not made plans for future negotiations.

Meanwhile, if there is a season this year, the New York post reports that MLB and NBC Sports have entered into “serious” talks about the network broadcasting games this season, with most of the games expected to run on NBC’s streaming platform, Peacock. The reports notes that the expectation is that Apple and NBC would both be involved this year.

All Russian teams — club and national — are now banned indefinitely by FIFA and UEFA as a result of the country’s invasion of Ukraine. The announcement came on Monday and removes the possibility of a Russian team competing in the 2022 World Cup. The IOC recommended on Monday that Russian and Belarussian athletes and officials be excluded from international events.

The National Hockey League released a statement condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and announced that the league suspended its relationships with the league’s business partners in Russia in addition to pausing Russian language social and digital media sites. In addition, the league is discontinuing any consideration of Russia as a location for any future competitions involving the NHL. The NHL also made note that it remained “concerned about the well-being of the players from Russia, who play in the NHL on behalf of their NHL Clubs, and not on behalf of Russia. We understand they and their families are being placed in an extremely difficult position.”

The ATP and WTA echoed “calls for the violence to end and peace to return” in Ukraine and made the decision to suspend the WTA / ATP combined event, scheduled this October in Moscow. The ITF Board also made the decision to suspend the Russian Tennis Federation and Belarus Tennis Federation membership and to withdraw their entries from all ITF international team competition until further notice. This action follows the cancellation of all ITF tournaments in Russia and Belarus indefinitely.

The National Women’s Soccer League unlocked telecast details for the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup. The tournament is set to kick off on March 18, and feature three matches broadcast on CBS, including the Championship match. Four contests will air on CBS Sports Network, and all of the matches will stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. Additionally, the Challenge Cup in its entirety will be available to stream internationally on Twitch.

Andscape made its debut as a rebranded and expanded version of ESPN’s The Undefeated. Andscape will serve as a content creator for The Walt Disney Company, encompassing an editorial unit with a website, a book publishing arm, a film and television division, and a music publishing group — all with the shared mission of uniting, entertaining, inspiring, and connecting audiences through a Black lens. The Andscape platform will regularly feature new content across its website and YouTube channel, and will also be a content originator in the form of signature films, digital content, and books for other platforms.

A&E and WWE are broadening their ties, signing a multiyear expansion of the programing partnering that will slate over 130 hours of programming on A&E platforms. Series that will run include a continuation of the Biography series focused on WWE staples as well as WWE Rivals and WWE”s Most Wanted Treasures, per THR.

The inaugural race of the 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES delivered the series’ most-watched season-opener in 11 years, according to Nielsen, on NBC and Peacock. The GPSP averaged a Total Audience Delivery (TAD) of 1.429 million viewers on the platforms, making it not only the most-watched INDYCAR season opener in 11 years but also the most-watched non-Indy 500 INDYCAR race in 11 years. Sunday’s GPSP was up 53% over the 2021 INDYCAR season opener.

3ICE, a new, six-team, independent, three-on-three professional ice hockey league in North America, has announced that Bob Errey, Steve Mears and Nick Gismondi will serve as the league’s television broadcast crew for its 2022 inaugural season. The team will make their debut on Saturday, June 18 when the season opens at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas with coverage airing on CBS Sports Network in the US and TSN and RDS in Canada.

Amazon Web Services and the National Hockey League announced Face-off Probability, a live, in-game NHL stat that will be displayed as a graphic that instantly shows the odds of a player winning a face-off and possession of the puck and displays them on screen for fans watching the broadcast of the game. Before the puck is dropped in a face-off, the Face-off Probability machine learning model identifies where on the ice a face-off is going to occur, and who will take the face-off, and determines the probability of each player winning the draw.

Learfield announced a multi-faceted agreement with Recur to push the creation and adoption of collegiate digital products and collectibles via Recur’s collegiate NFT experience, NFTU.com. During the multi-year relationship, Recur will work with Learfield’s integrated companies and its partner universities to deliver: commemorative NFT tickets and packages through Paciolan; integration of NFTU.com into official athletic websites and apps built by Sidearm Sports; licensing administration and management through CLC; NFT category-specific college sports marketing sponsorship with Learfield partner institutions; and product development, asset creation, and brand-sponsorable NFT offerings.

Razer struck a multi-year, wide-ranging sponsorship with Envy Gaming to become its Official Peripherals Partner and provider of headsets, keyboards, mice, mouse mats, and gaming chairs to the organization’s talent, creators, and professional esports teams. This overarching partnership will result in collaboration across multiple teams and properties under the Envy and OpTic Gaming banner including: OpTic Texas in the Call of Duty League, OpTic Halo, OpTic Valorant, Envy Rocket League, the Dallas Fuel in the Overwatch League, as well as integration with the organization’s diverse roster of content creators. The National Hockey League rolled out plans and announced that registration for the 2022 NHL Gaming World Championship. The 2022 NHL Gaming World Championship will consist of two separate tournaments with a Champion being crowned in both North America and Europe. Stateside, the NHL GWC – North America tournament will feature two weeks of Online Open play qualification, with game play beginning March 16 and March 23.
