IN THE NEWS
Tegna reported total company revenue of $938 million for 4Q20, up 35% year-over-year, driven by record political advertising and continued growth in subscription revenue. Revenue was up 46% from the fourth quarter of 2018 driven by the same factors, as well as the impact of acquisitions. Excluding political advertising, fourth quarter revenue was slightly up year-over-year. “We will continue to execute and innovate to drive advertising and marketing services revenues, and we expect to see continued improvement in underlying advertising trends following the impact of the global pandemic,” said Dave Lougee, Tegna President and CEO.
Roku has entered into an agreement to acquire Nielsen’s Advanced Video Advertising business, which includes Nielsen’s video automatic content recognition and dynamic ad insertion technologies. The companies are also entering into a strategic partnership to integrate complementary Nielsen ad and content measurement products into the Roku platform and further advance Nielsen ONE, the company’s cross-media measurement solution. “Tens of billions of dollars continue to be spent annually on traditional TV advertising,” said Louqman Parampath, VP of Product Management at Roku. “Combining Nielsen’s AVA technology with Roku’s innovative ad tech and scale will enable us to deliver the benefits of TV streaming advertising to traditional TV. Roku will bring the promise of DAI to the market for the first time ever at scale — providing better targeting and measurement for advertisers, creating easy integration and additional revenue opportunities for programmers’ ad sales teams, and improving the TV experience for viewers.”
Nat Geo is going big with the March 11 world debut of “Genius: Aretha.” A March 11 premiere event will include pre-show performances, drive-in screenings and star Cynthia Erivo performing Aretha Franklin songs taped at the Greek Theater. The series has its network debut on Sunday, March 21.
“T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle” stars Clifford “T.I.” Harris and Tameka “Tiny” Harris have been accused of sexual abuse, kidnapping, and assault against several women, allegations detailed at a news conference yesterday. Attorney Tyrone A. Blackburn said he requested authorities open investigations on behalf of 11 alleged victims, for incidents he claimed took place between 2005-2018. The Harrises “deny in the strongest possible terms these unsubstantiated and baseless allegations,” said their lawyer. “We are confident that if these claims are thoroughly and fairly investigated, no charges will be forthcoming.” Shooting for season four of their show was paused in early February after the allegations came to light.
Satellite TV service Orby TV, launched in 2019 as a lower-cost TV alternative, has shut down. The move was telegraphed last month, when a message on the company’s web site said it was not activating new customer accounts. The service now says it has worked with Dish Network on a limited time offer for Orby TV customers.
Disney and the NFL have reportedly reached an agreement on a new media rights deal that would keep “Monday Night Football” at ESPN, and put ABC back in rotation for the Super Bowl. Broadcast deals with CBS, Fox and NBC are also being negotiated ahead of their expiration in 2022.
