IN THE NEWS

There were two sets of thank you speeches for best picture at the Oscars last night. Presenter Warren Beatty opened the envelope, hesitated, and handed it to co-presenter Faye Dunaway, who announced La La Land as the winner. But in fact Moonlight was the victor. Informed of the mistake, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz said from the stage, “There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture.” Beatty explained he had opened the envelope and it read Emma Stone. Accounting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers said they “deeply regret” the mistake.

Other winners included Emma Stone (La La Land) as Best Actress, Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) as Best Actor, Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) as Supporting Actor, Viola Davis (Fences) as Supporting Actress and Damien Chazelle (La La Land) as Best Director.

Actor Bill Paxton died on Saturday due to complications from surgery. He was 61. Paxton, whose television credits include HBO’s Big Love and History Channel’s Hatfields & McCoys, also starred in CBS’s Training Day, just launched February 2. “We are truly devastated at the passing of our friend Bill Paxton,” said Training Day producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “He was a tremendously talented actor, and a wonderful man beloved by the entire Training Day cast and crew…. He will be missed more than we can possible express.”

CBS yanked Doubt from the schedule after two episodes. The legal drama premiered to 5.29 million viewers and .8 among A18-49 in Live+SD Nielsens, dropping to 4 million viewers and .6 in the demo its second time out. Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders will launch Wednesday, March 8 at 10p, replacing the Katherine Heigl starrer in the time period. A rerun of Bull will fill the slot on March 1.

ComScore CEO Gian Flugoni told investors on Friday that the company expects its ExtendedTV product, measuring content across linear, time-shifted and digital, to be released later this year, coinciding with the release of its new data processing platform. “ExtendedTV really lives up to its name because it allows the content owners and advertisers to see how TV programming extends across platforms and screens, and to truly understand the unduplicated reach of individual television shows,” said Fulgoni.

Despite comments Ryan Murphy made on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, an upcoming American Horror Story won’t be focused on the 2016 presidential election. Murphy clarified his position at the Publicists Guild Awards Luncheon, where he accepted an award for Television Showmanship of the Year. “The themes of American Horror Story have always been allegories. You will not see Trump and Clinton as characters on the show,” Murphy said, explaining of his comments to Watch host Andy Cohen thus: “They gave me 3 martinis in 20 minutes!” But with Sarah Paulson (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story) on hand to present his award, Murphy added, “Now as I look over at Sarah Paulson, I think of Kellyanne Conway. I don’t know, I might be rewriting!”

After Trump tweeted Saturday that he would not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 29, White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee offered an explanation on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos. “I think it’s kind of naïve of us to think that we can all walk into a room for a couple of hours and pretend that some of that tension isn’t there,” said Huckabee. “One of the things we say in the South is, if a Girl Scout egged your house, would you buy cookies from her?” To which Stephanopoulos replied, “I think a lot would argue the eggs have gone both ways on that.” The last president to skip the dinner was Ronald Reagan, but that was because he was recovering from a 1981 assassination attempt – and Reagan still called in to the event via phone.

Huckabee’s comments, of course, came after White House strategist Steve Bannon, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference, referred to the media as the “opposition party” and said the relationship between the press and the White House is “going to get worse.” And the next day, it did. CNN, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Buzzfeed and Politico were blocked from an informal briefing, while conservative outlets Fox News, Breitbart and One America News Network did make the cut. “This is an unacceptable development by the Trump White House,” said CNN in a statement. “Apparently this is how they retaliate when you report facts they don’t like.” Ari Fleischer, press secretary under George W. Bush, had a different take on Trump during an interview on CNN, saying the president “is making journalism interesting and great again.”

Trump also helped make the Oscars funny again. It didn’t take long for host Jimmy Kimmel to take a jab at POTUS during last night’s Oscar’s broadcast. In his opening monologue, Kimmel thanked the president, noting, “Remember when last year the Oscars were considered racist?”, then said to French actress Isabelle Huppert (Elle), “I’m glad Homeland Security let you in tonight.” Of Meryl Streep, Kimmel noted the 20-time nominee’s “many uninspiring and overrated performances,” leading the audience to give Streep, called overrated by Trump, a standing ovation.

With shortened television seasons and a changing business model, formal contract negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, set to begin March 13, could be tricky. “Nobody wants to strike, but we are willing to if we have to,” one union member told Deadline coming out of a WGA informational meeting. The WGA’s last major strike, in 2007, lasted 100 days.

Research shows viewers don’t mind being marketed to as long as the content is entertaining  which is why hitting the branded content sweet spot is so important in this age of ad-blocking. Scripps Networks Interactive is one of the companies producing content that’s “actionable, aspirational and entertaining, appealing to both audiences and advertisers.” They’ll be offering insights and strategies for tomorrow’s webinar, Winning Strategies for Branded Content, along with success stories from The Weather Channel, Discovery Communications, ESPN and BEN. If producing branded content that hits the right note is part of your ad strategy, you’ll want to register here.

Science Channel has found its new Mythbusters. Rescue diver, pilot and drone enthusiast Brian Louden and product designer Jonathan Lung outlasted the competition on live finale Mythbusters: The Search. MythBusters ended a 14-year run on Science sister net Discovery in 20016.

COMING UP

Hour-long Smithsonian Channel special The Obama Years: The Power of Words, airing tonight at 8p, takes viewers inside President Barack Obama’s career through the prism of his speeches. “Historians are just beginning to debate the legacy of our 44th president, but most agree that one secret to his success was his use of the bully pulpit,” Charles Poe, SVP of production for Smithsonian Channel, tells Cynopsis. “We wanted to trace Barack Obama’s political career through a handful of speeches that are likely to be remembered and hear behind-the-scenes stories, from key members of his administration, of how they came together, often under tremendous pressure. It’s more of a roller coaster than most viewers might expect, from the highs of Obama’s breakout 2004 convention speech to the heartbreaking aftermath of the Sandy Hook and Charleston shootings. As a writer before he became president, Obama was very involved in the speechwriting process, and this film offers a unique perspective on his defining moments.”

LEGAL BRIEFS

A federal judge trimmed an antitrust lawsuit Viamedia filed against Comcast last May in Illinois, but Viamedia is plowing ahead. Viamedia says it has plausibly alleged that Comcast is violating federal and state antitrust and tort laws by forcing competing satellite and cable TV providers to deal directly with Comcast if they want to advertise in regional markets, and that a November 4 court decision is unchanged by the more recent decision. The company is seeking not less than $75 million.

An LA court dismissed a lawsuit brought by actress Tatyana Ali (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) last July against Warner Bros. and Telepictures that claimed the companies had stolen her idea for daytime talker The Real. Ali said she pitched the concept in 2012, and watched with “complete disbelief” when the show premiered in 2013. In the ruling, the court said Ali did not present “facts or concrete information protectable as a trade secret.”

Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) landed a series regular role in NBC comedy pilot The Sackett Sisters, about estranged sibs who perform an act of heroism.

Lea Michele was released from her Scream Queens deal to co-star in ABC’s comedy pilot from Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs. Queens has yet to receive a season 3 renewal from Fox.

Another Scream Queens alum, Keke Palmer, will play a case officer as a series regular in season 2 of Epix drama Berlin Station. Production begins next month.

David Castaneda (Sicaro) will be a series regular in an untitled CBS cop drama pilot focused on the members of a Mexican-American family.

Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) will star opposite Sarah Shahi in NBC drama pilot Reverie.

DIGITAL DATA

Smaller internet providers got a break from the FCC, which gave broadband providers with 250,000 or fewer subscription a five-year waiver on stricter reporting requirements meant to increase internet service provider transparency. “I firmly believe these ISPs should spend their limited capital building out better broadband to rural America  not hiring lawyers and accountants to fill out unnecessary paperwork demanded by Washington, D.C.,” said FCC chairman Ajit Pai. FCC Democrat Mignon Clyburn voted against the exemption, calling it part of “an ongoing quest to dismantle basic consumer protections.”

Go90 drama Preached launches today, with all episodes free on go90.com and the go90 app. Series follows the pastor with a non-traditional approach.
