The Kentucky Derby will run on NBC for another decade. NBC Sports Group and Churchill Downs Incorporated entered a 10-year agreement that extends NBCSG’s exclusive rights to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, where Derby and Oaks day programming will be televised on NBC and NBCSN and featured on NBC’s digital platforms.
"This agreement extends our relationship with NBC to 25 years and includes what will be a very special historical moment, the 150th Kentucky Derby in 2024," said Churchill Downs Chairman and CEO Bob Evans. "We will not only achieve our financial objectives with this deal, but we will also continue to benefit from NBC’s unique media assets and innovative perspective to help us continue to grow the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby brands."
Major League Baseball, Comcast and DirecTV asked a federal judge to rule in their favor over a class action lawsuit alleging antitrust issues over sports broadcasts, after plaintiffs challenged the way leagues are carving territorial rights with its TV partners before selling out-of-market packages. THR writes that MLB said that the nature of its TV system enhanced the game because it allowed the league to deliver national networks with "meaningful, exclusive" rights and "incentivizing the creation and distribution of live video of more games of more clubs."
Meanwhile, MTV2 is rounding the bases on a new series with MLB called Off the Bat from the MLB Fan Cave. The series is hosted by Sway, Fat Joe, Chris Distefano and Melanie Iglesias, and looks to showcase the lives of players ranging from Robinson Cano to David Ortiz to Jose Fernandez. The program launches in April as a weekly, half-hour series broadcast from the fames MLB Fan Cave in NY.
Continuing the baseball theme, now the Dodgers’ network SportsNet LA is off the ground, the company revealed that none other than Larry King will serve as a staple personality for the channel. The series, Larry King At Bat, features the lifelong Dodgers fan interviewing "celebrities, baseball legends, Dodger personalities and other luminaries" in a series of hour-long episodes. The first episode will debut on Tuesday, March 18 at 7p and feature Orel Hershiser.
In addition, MLB made its position clear yesterday on the controversial Arizona Senate Bill 1062, which would allow private businesses to deny service based on their religious beliefs. "As the sport of Jackie Robinson, Major League Baseball and its 30 Clubs stand united behind the principles of respect, inclusion and acceptance," the league said in a statement. "Those values are fundamental to our game’s diverse players, employees and fans. We welcome individuals of different sexual orientations, races, religions, genders and national origins. MLB has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discrimination based on sexual orientation, as reflected by our collective bargaining agreement with the MLB Players Association. Accordingly, MLB will neither support nor tolerate any words, attitudes or actions that imperil the inclusive communities that we have strived to foster within our game."
Cable operators once again named ESPN as the top network with the most average perceived value among all networks measured in Beta Research Corp’s annual Cable Operator Evaluation Study. The channel was also ranked the most important network in their cable systems for the 10th straight year, with 93% of operators describing ESPN as "very important" for subscriber retention and acquisition. In addition, ESPN2 ranked second in average perceived value.
SiriusXM re-signed Casey Stern for his daily hosting spot on the company’s MLB Network Radio channel. In addition, he will now also have expanded duties on additional SiriusXM sports channels while continuing to host Inside Pitch alongside his co-host Jim Bowden. Casey will also continue to be a lead host at MLB Network Radio’s coverage of baseball’s biggest events, but will now expand his duties across other SiriusXM sports channels with roles on SiriusXM NFL Radio and SiriusXM’s all-sports Mad Dog Sports Radio channel.
HBO returns to the ring this weekend, offering World Championship Boxing: Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Bryan Vera II and Orlando Salido vs. Vasyl Lomachenko on Saturday at 9:45p. Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will call the action.
The UFC announced that it will work with Input Media, a sports production company in the UK, to produce the upcoming EMEA Fight Nights. The first event will be UFC Fight Night London: Gustafsson vs. Manuwa on 8th March at London’s O2 Arena.

Mike Schmidt it returning to the Phillies, where he will join Comcast SportsNet as a member of the club’s broadcast team for 13 Sunday home games in 2014. Schmidt will work as an analyst alongside play by play man Tom McCarthy for Sundays with Schmidt broadcasts this season.
CSN Houston announced that The Dwight Howard Show will debut on Tuesday, March 4 after Rockets Postgame Live with the first episode looking at Howard’s trip to the 2014 NBA All-Star Game.
Time Warner Cable Deportes will bring back its original, documentary-style series, Galaxy Confidencial today at 9:30p. The series will bring audiences "new levels of access to the team and continue to deliver unique content created especially for the LA Galaxy’s Hispanic fan base." This season, the LA Galaxy story will be narrated by former Mexican national soccer team goalkeeper and network Galaxy analyst, Martin "El Pulpo" Zuniga.
Stanford women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer is the subject of a documentary for Pac-12 Networks, which is offering fans a look behind the scenes of the legendary coach. Tara VanDerveer: Life in a Season spotlights her 28th season, including her 900th career win. The special debuts on March 17 at 8p.

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products is Simpsonizing the Chelsea Football Club. The first-of-its-kind campaign teams The Simpsons with the football club, joining FC Barcelona, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, Sport Club Corinthians, FC Porto, Juventus and Boca Juniors. Chelsea Football Club will co-create a broad line of branded merchandise that will be available to consumers in 2014. In addition, a soccer-themed episode of The Simpsons will air in March 2014 on FOX.
Reese’s is launching Fan Edition Printed Cups, a new line of peanut butter cups offering 10 different basketball designs for fans ahead of the NCAA Tournaments. Imagery included jerseys, basketballs brackets and basketball terminology such as, "Double Team," "Nothing But Net" and "Dual Threat." The Fan Edition packaging will also feature the NCAA logo as well as a basketball player silhouette. The Reese’s brand is the official candy partner of the NCAA and the title sponsor of the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Reese’s College All-Star Game.
This weekend’s Blue Jeans Go Green 200 at Phoenix International Raceway is calling attention to a denim recycling program designed to create housing insulation for communities in need. Presented by Cotton, The Fabric of Our Lives, the Nationwide Series race will see four collection locations stationed around the 1-mile PIR track for fans to recycle old denim.
ESPN led the digital sports category in January across a number of metrics including average minute audience (115,284), visits (605.6 million), unique visitors (62.0 million), total minutes (5.1 billion) and minutes per visitor (83.0), according to the January comScore Multi-Platform report. The month also saw 41.3 million people use ESPN mobile properties for 2.6 billion minutes in January, the 5th consecutive month in which more unique people accessed ESPN content on mobile devices than on computers.
