02/24/15: FOX Sports delivers a roadblock to the Women’s World Cup; Back9Network hits pause; Will MLBAM cash in?

Good morning. It’s Tuesday February 24, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

After launching a striking Women’s World Cup promo during the Daytona 500, FOX Sports detailed its marketing plans for thus summer’s event to mark the 100 day countdown to the tournament. The spot will see a 30-second version running during a coordinated 21st Century Fox 34-channel prime time roadblock on tonight around 8p. Participating channels include: FOX, FOX News Channel, FX, FXX, FXM, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, FOX Deportes, FOX Soccer Plus, Big Ten Network and FOX Sports’ 22 owned-and-operated regional sports networks. Other promotional tools include Weather-Controlled Digital Billboards which will see 15-second ads run 24/7 on digital billboards in Times Square and LA Live over a four-day span. FOX Sports 1 will also showcase three classic FIFA Women’s World Cup matches featuring the USWNT on that date starting at 8a while the FOXSports.com home page will be taken over with the same messaging as the digital billboard and a 100-Day countdown clock.

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup this June is going to re-ignite all the passion and fervor so many Americans experienced this past summer during the men’s World Cup,” said Robert Gottlieb, FOX Sports Executive Vice President, Head of Marketing. “All the excitement and buzz is about to take hold again, and we’re expecting the Women’s World Cup to bethecan’t-miss sports and pop-culture moment of the summer”.

ON THE AIR

Newborn golf net Back9Network has suspended operations due to financial issues. The channel sent out a statement to reporters writing that network executives were hunting to resolve the issue, saying “Due to a temporary shortfall in capital, Back9Network has suspended its operations. Management and the board of directors are planning next steps and will continue their efforts to secure long-term, operating capital. The company will keep the public informed with any new developments.” The channel launched in September on DIRECTV.

NBC Sports continues to shore up its boxing coverage, announcing the debut of PBC: Corner to Corner on Wednesday at 11p. The one-hour program will look into the lives of boxers Keith Thurman, Robert Guerrero, Adrien Broner and John Molina Jr., as they prepare for their bouts in the primetime debut of the PBC on NBC on Saturday, March 7 at 8:30p. Subsequent airings will start on March 4 at 11p.

SportsCenter booked its ticket to visit all 30 MLB Clubs during this year’s Spring Training Tour that will see the ESPN staple drop by Florida’s Grapefruit League and Arizona’s Cactus League and offer analysis on each MLB Club. All SportsCenter Spring Training Tour updates will begin each day during the 9a edition starting this week..

International sports agency MP & Silva announced that it has acquired media rights to the German Bundesliga in Japan for the 2015/2016 through the 2017/2018 season from FOX International Channels under a comprehensive sublicensing deal approved by Bundesliga’s commercial subsidiary DFL Sports Enterprises. MP & Silva now serves as the exclusive distributor of Bundesliga rights in Japan across all platforms, including cable, satellite, terrestrial, Web TV, IPTV and mobile.

Daytona continued to deliver for NASCAR sponsors, with Performance Research revealing that its social media listening and analysis platform EVsdrop saw 9% of total Daytona posts relating to sponsors. That more than doubles other sporting events, according to the company. Outside of the event title sponsors during the week, including Budweiser, Xfinity and Sprint, Ford had the greatest share of voice, generating 12% of all sponsor-related mentions.

The International Surfing Association is beefing up its ranks in its quest to become an Olympic sport, and has now added Lithuania and US Virgin Islands as its newest Member Federations. Other nations to join the ISA since January 2014 include Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Cayman Islands, The Gambia, Latvia, Lebanon, Poland, Madagascar, Nauru, Nepal, Nigeria and Sri Lanka.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

MLBAM may be going independent, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. Flush with a slew of partnerships, the report states that MLB is mulling spinning off part of MLBAM into a separate company “so it can focus on the flood of new clients and attract new investment.” Meanwhile, properties like MLB.com and the online ticketing division would remain inside MLB.

NBC Sports reports that its regional networks, which are now live streaming NBA games, have seen spikes through the first three months of this new service. According to figures from Adobe Analytics, the increase in minutes watched across Comcast SportsNet’s live NBA streams has jumped more than 122% since launch, posting 3.1 million cumulative minutes watched in November, 4.6 million in December, and 6.9 million in January.

The ACC and Raycom Sports have announced the launch of the ACC Trivia Challenge App, Basketball Edition, detailing the history of ACC basketball. The new app is free and offers thousands of ACC Basketball facts and figures.

As WWE Network hits its first birthday, the company is giving fans the chance to sample the with a 24-hour “Best Of” programming marathon that will be streamed for free on WWE.com. For the rest of the month, the full WWE Network experience is available for free for new subscribers.
