In a bid for video ad dollars Time Inc., home of the venerable Sports Illustrated, is partnering with several leagues to launch a live-streaming sports network. Offering viewers game highlights, 120 Sports will give fans access to unauthenticated video programming “through a new technology platform built to intuitively integrate video and data in ways fans haven’t experienced before.” Launch partners include the NHL, NBA, MLB.com, NASCAR and collegiate conferences. The 24-hour linear net, featuring programming in two-minute segments, is set to debut this spring.

IN THE NEWS

Bravo greenlit its first original series, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. Based on the book series by Vicki Iovine, an exec producer on the show, the Universal Cable Productions series “offers a fresh take,” on the subject of splits, said Andrew Wang, Bravo’s VP of scripted development and production. “For our first scripted show, we wanted something that was sophisticated, funny and honest.” Lisa Edelstein (House), Janeane Garofalo (The Larry Sanders Show) and Beau Garrett (Entourage) will star in the one-hour series, set to premiere in 2015.

The FCC voted to require program distributors to improve the quality of closed captioning, with new standards mandating best efforts to make captions accurate and complete. The vote, ten years after a petition from the disability community was filed, is “just the beginning,” said FCC chairman Tom Wheeler.

In Aereo‘s appeal to a federal judge’s order that it shut down in Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Montana, the streamer of broadcast signals warns of “great and permanent harm” to itself, and “great confusion in the minds of the general public.” Not to mention consumers who signed up for the service, “paid fees, and purchased devices” with which to access broadcast TV content with an Aereo antenna. The Supreme Court is scheduled to start hearing arguments in the case of the broadcasters versus Aereo on April 22.

After CNN‘s Wolf Blitzer blasted Ted Nugent for calling President Obama a “subhuman mongrel,” the right-wing rock star took to Twitter on Wednesday, saying, “CNN Joseph Goebbells Saul Alinsky propaganda ministry mongrels” – then canceled a scheduled appearance on the news net’s Erin Burnett OutFront two hours before air. On the show, Burnett said Nugent had cited illness as the cause.

ESPN host Keith Olbermann also relied on Twitter to send a message, in his case to explain why he’s been MIA lately. “FYI regarding my whereabouts: I am suffering from shingles,” Olbermann tweeted Thursday morning. “If somebody comes up and say ‘Hey, want shingles?,’ I tell them ‘no siree Bob!'”

Despite concern that Russia’s anti-gay laws could taint official Olympics sponsors, a new study published in AdAge indicates otherwise. A YouGov BrandIndex survey shows gay and lesbian perception of most official sponsors has actually gone up, with Chobani yogurt increasing its purchase consideration and positive buzz more than any other brand.

Food Network is tempting advertisers with a redesigned web site, with enhanced video features and optimized mobile performers. “We are creating more opportunities for advertisers to integrate their messaging into the site beyond traditional ad units,” said Ann Lundberg, SVP of food and cooking digital sales for Scripps Networks Interactive.

Sherry Stringfield is going Under the Dome. The ER alum will have a major guest role on the second season of the CBS summer event series, says the Hollywood Reporter; the casting reunites her with Dome exec producer Neal Baer, who also exec produced ER.

Elisha Cuthbert (Happy Endings) will star in NBC pilot One Big Happy, reports Deadline. The project, from Warner Bros. Television and A Very Good Production, focuses on two platonic friends who succeed in their efforts to get pregnant, just as one impulsively gets married.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Spike TV is developing an event series about the five-year mogul war between Donald Trump and Steve Wynn. The War at the Shore, based on the best-seller, comes from Kevin Spacey‘s Trigger Street Productions and Giant Pirates Entertainment.

U.K.’s Channel 5 acquired free-to-air rights for NCIS: Los Angeles. Said Katie Keenan, head of acquisitions for Channel 5, “NCIS has been one of our most successful dramas over the last nine years… [NCIS: Los Angeles] is a slick addition to the franchise.”

RATINGS

Its coverage of the Olympics Wednesday earned NBC the most viewers in 12 years for the night, 20.2 million, enough to beat time-zone friendlier Vancouver in 2010 (19.2 million) as well as 2006’s Torino Games (16 million).

Was NBC’s gain American Idol‘s loss? The second live show of the singing competition scored a 2.6/8 Nielsen rating among A18-49, a demo dip versus last week’s taped show (3.4/10).

Jimmy Fallon‘s third day in his new job, The Tonight Show hit 7.27 million viewers, the NBC late-nighter’s best Wednesday showing since February 2004, and rose from 2.3 to 2.4 among A18-49, according to Nielsen.

Nielsen numbers for ABC Family‘s Twisted increased over the show’s winter premiere by double digits on Tuesday, posting gains among target demos of 16 percent for A18-34 (to 445,000) and 20 percent for W18-34 (to 408,000). Lead-in Pretty Little Liars was once again cable’s number one telecast in the hour among F12-34 (1.5 million/3.2 rating), and was also cable’s top draw in the hour for total viewers (2.6 million).

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC grabbed the most A18-49 viewers Wednesday with 5.0/15, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. NBC’s Olympics coverage earned 4.5/14 at 8p to beat the first hour of American Idol on Fox (2.7/8). The Games jumped to 5.3/15 at 9p, followed by Idol’s 2.7/. At 10p NBC led with 5.3/16, versus 2.0/6 for CBS’s CSI.
