TODAY’S CODEBREAKER
Purchasing Funnel: The purchasing funnel is a consumer-focused marketing model that illustrates the consumer journey toward the purchase of a product or service. For instance, a customer might see an ad on a website, then sign up for a newsletter from the company, then see another ad on Facebook, then buy the product on Amazon. In the age of digital media, it’s become easier than ever to track customers’ path through the funnel.
Snapchat is bringing more content to its Discover platform. In a partnership with 45th & Dean, the in-house digital agency of A+E Networks, Snapchat will develop new short-form shows. It’s not the first time Snapchat has reached such a pact; NBCU, BBC, Disney-ABC, and Turner have all made deals to release content on the app. The first show to be developed under the A+E deal will be Second Chance, a series in which couples work on relationship-threatening conflicts. It’ll be the first unscripted show that a network has ever produced for Snapchat that isn’t based on an existing television series. (Though future shows produced under the pact may well be based on existing properties from A+E’s networks.) Second Chance is set to premiere in April. As with its arrangements with other TV brands, Snapchat will share in both ad revenue and sales responsibilities.

When it comes to earnings, Facebook had a smashing 2016. Their one real blemish: A series of revelations that the company had been inaccurately tabulating some important ad-viewership metrics. And if Facebook wants to keep up its success, the last thing it can afford to do is lose the trust of advertisers. That’s why the company’s just agreed to be audited by the Media Rating Council. According to a statement from Facebook, the audit is intended to “to verify the accuracy of the information we deliver to our partners.” The social media giant also announced that it will provide its third-party ad verification partners with more detailed impression-level data for both Facebook and Instagram ads. Finally, the company announced that it will roll out some new video-buying options for advertisers later in 2017. For instance, in ads lasting 10 seconds or last, advertisers will be able to pay only when an ad has been shown in full; when an ad’s pixels are in view for two seconds or more; and/or when a user has activated an ad’s sound.
YouTube just launched a mobile app that lets users download videos for offline viewing. Called YouTube Go, the app is available in beta the U.S. But ultimately, the app’s primary audience is likely to be users in areas with unreliable Internet connectivity. Still, it’s already been installed by over 5,000 U.S. users.
Business Insider reports that Daqri, a California-based augmented reality helmet maker that’s raised at least $132 million to date, is laying off about 25% of its 330 workers. So far, about 60 workers have reportedly been let go. In a statement, Daqri downplayed the moves as “organizational changes” that will affect “a small fraction of the company.” “In fact,” the company said, “we are actively recruiting more than two dozen positions.” As BI points out, the company was seeking to raise another $200 million as recently as October; that funding round reportedly hasn’t taken place yet.
As first reported by Variety, there’s a new Chinese tech startup on the scene that’s making some very bold claims. MEIFine is billing itself as a digital distribution hub with the ability to stream foreign TV shows and movies to Chinese audiences without running up against important quotas. Chinese regulators have been extremely strict about enforcing such quotas, and haven’t been shy to roll out new ones. As a result, many of the industry experts who spoke to Variety were highly skeptical of MEIFine’s claims, worrying that the startup’s business might be destined for a collapse either before – or not long after – it gets off the ground. You can check out the story here.
STX Entertainment named has elevated one of its execs to a high-ranking position in its digital division. Rich Sullivan will serve as STXdigital’s Chief Operating Officer, a newly created position. He previously served as STX’s Chief Financial Officer. Sullivan will stay on at the studio’s Burbank offices; he’ll continue in his current role until STX finds a successor.
To date, what’s the most expensive original series that Amazon has produced? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)
Our Last Trivia Question: Follow-up: According to Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker, what’s the origin of the show’s title? Brooker’s explanation: “The ‘black mirror’ of the title is the one you’ll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone.” Kudos to Andy Pittman-TAMU/TX, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-Whose Line Is It Anyway?/Angst Productions/CA, David Westberg-SAG-AFTA Federal Credit Union, Lorrie Shilling/CA, and Matt Balaban-NBCUniversal/NY

This week, Netflix will debut Girlfriend’s Day, a new dark comedy film starring Saul Goodman. (He insists on calling himself Bob Odenkirk, but we all know better.) The movie debuts on Valentine’s Day, but it looks supremely unromantic. Check out the trailer here.
See you tomorrow,
