Bob Costas’ iconic run as primetime host of Olympics is at an end, with NBC Sports announcing that Mike Tirico would take over duties beginning with PyeongChang 2018. Costas served as NBC’s primetime host for a U.S.-television record 11 Olympics every Olympics on NBC since 1992. Costas also served as NBC’s late night host at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
In a conference call with reporters, Costas noted that “I had made this decision more than a year ago, and people at NBC knew about it, but we didn’t want it even in the tiniest way to obscure our coverage of Rio or get in the way or distract us in any way. So we waited until now, exactly a year out from the start of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, to make the announcement.”
“Bob has been so gracious about all of this,” said Tirico. “How lucky am I to get this opportunity of a lifetime and have someone who I think the world of available as a resource? And Bob has said he would be there for any questions I may have or any guidance I might need. I’m just so blessed to be supported by my family and all the good people that are now part of my NBC family as well.”
TNT laid out its game plan for NBA All-Star 2017, which runs Feb. 16-19. Overall, Turner Sports carries more than 24 hours of NBA All-Star programming on TNT culminating with the 66th annual NBA All-Star Game presented by Kia on Feb. 19 at 8:30p. Coverage of the game will be simulcast on TNT and TBS with Marv Albert calling his 22nd NBA All-Star Game with analysts Reggie Miller and Chris Webber, along with reporters David Aldridge and Kristen Ledlow. TNT will premiere All-Star specific event coverage with the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Feb. 17 at 9p. Meanwhile, a tribute to legendary TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager will include the network’s sideline reporters using unique microphone flags with “Sager Strong” branding throughout the weekend. Additionally, 30 local cancer survivors will be hosted at the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge in a special Sager Strong section of the lower seating bowl.
Meanwhile, ESPN will televise NBA All-Star Celebrity Game 2017 on Feb. 17 at 7p. This year, Michael Smith and Jemele Hill will serve as the guest coaches for the West and East teams, respectively. Mark Jones will provide play-by-play for the telecast, alongside Michelle Beadle, who will call her first Celebrity Game.
NBC Sports Group locked in a multi-year deal with the Red Bull Air Race World Championship beginning with the 2017 season. NBC, NBCSN, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app will combine to present coverage of all eight events during the 2017 Red Bull Air Race season, beginning with this year’s event in Abu Dhabi on Feb. 10.
Canada’s TSN unveiled its expanded MLS on TSN broadcast schedule for the 2017 regular season. The slate will be headlined by 75 games featuring Canadian teams, the most ever on the network, as well as exclusive English-language coverage of the 2017 MLS All-Star Game and the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. New this year will be the launch of new broadcast windows, complementing the network’s slate of matches airing on Wednesday evenings, with matchups on Friday nights, while CTV delivers national coverage of the MLS for the first time ever with a slate of seven marquee matchups on Saturday afternoons.

ESPN announced its five-game 2017 MLB Spring Training schedule will include a game from the United States Naval Academy on April 1 at 2p featuring the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals. The five-game schedule begins March 23, with a doubleheader featuring both the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues. The New York Yankees visit the Tampa Bay Rays at 1p, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers at 7p.
BTN is set to televise eight winter Big Ten Championships in 2017, including the entire Big Ten Hockey Tournament, wrestling, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor track & field and men’s and women’s gymnastics. Television coverage begins with the Big Ten Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 19 at 10:30a and continues with Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships at 10:30a on Feb. 26. Meanwhile, all five games of the Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament will be televised live on March 16-18, including the championship game on Saturday, March 18, at 8p.

As part of its Daytona Day buildup, FOX Sports is again turning to The Simpsons, announcing that series will see Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. help promote the Daytona campaign leading up to the 59th running of the DAYTONA 500 on Feb. 26 at 1p on the network. The pair will appear in promos during episodes that run on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19 on the network.

The National Basketball Association detailed its new esports plans with Take-Two Interactive Software for the NBA 2K eLeague, marking the first official eSports league operated by a US professional sports league. The organization will debut in 2018, and consist of teams operated by the NBA franchises following a professional sports league format: competing head-to-head throughout a regular season, participating in a bracketed playoff system, and concluding with a championship matchup. “We believe we have a unique opportunity to develop something truly special for our fans and the young and growing eSports community,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “We look forward to combining our best-in-class NBA sports team operators with Take-Two’s competitive gaming expertise to create a brand new league experience.”
