IN THE NEWS

SNL was feeling the Bern Saturday night. Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders made a pit stop on the campaign trail to appear on the show alongside host and alter-ego Larry David – and show some pretty impressive acting chops.

NBC has the blues, in the best way. Calling it one of the strongest dramas to debut in recent years, the net renewed Jennifer Lopez-produced and starring Shades of Blue for a second season. In Live +3 results from Nielsen through its first three telecasts, the series averaged a 2.5 rating in A18-49 and 11.2 million viewers overall.

Animation’s own Annie Awards were handed out over the weekend to the industry’s picks in the film, television and advertising realms. Among winners, The Simpsons “Halloween of Horror” episode (Gracie Films in association with 20th Century Fox Television) picked up the prize for Best General Audience Animated Television/Broadcast Production, and Wander Over Yonder episode “The Breakfast” (Disney Television Animation) won for Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production For Children.

Sixteen unproduced female-written television scripts made the 2016 WriteHer List created by women’s advocacy organization WeForShe. The scripts shined among nearly 200 nominations and were selected on criteria including diversity of cast and the number/quality of female roles.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBS can’t seem to stay out of the hospital. The net ordered another medical drama pilot, Sensory, inspired by the life of Harvard Med School researcher Dr. Joel Salinas, from David Zabel (ER), Scott Free Productions, CBS Television Studios and TriStar Television.

Richard Shepard is on board to direct the pilot for ABC period drama Model Women, from Sony TV’s TriStar Television and ABC Studios. Set in the fashion world of the late ‘70s, the show is inspired by recently published Robert Lacey bio Model Woman: Eileen Ford And The Business of Beauty. It’s written by Reality Bites’ Helen Childress and centers on an uncompromising woman who runs an internationally renowned modeling agency.

Ruben Fleischer, who helms new comedy Superstore, is on board to direct comedy The Second Fattest Housewife In Westport for ABC, From writer Sarah Dunn, producer Aaron Kaplan and ABC Studios. Penned by Dunn, the series is about life in a wealthy town of “perfect” families as told by a strong-willed mother raising her flawed family of three.

Michael Offer, who directed the pilot for the Shonda Rhimes-produced How To Get Away With Murder for ABC, is back in Shondaland. He’ll direct Still Star-Crossed, a Romeo and Juliet sequel written by Heather Mitchell (Scandal) and based on the book by Melinda Taub.

Former How I Met Your Mother exec producer Pam Fryman is directing and executive-producing ensemble comedy pilot Good Fortune at NBC. From Rashida Jones and Will McCormack’s Le Train Train and 20th Century Fox TV, the show is about a young woman whose life takes a 180 when she starts taking advice from a fortune teller. HIMYM‘s Matt Zinman and Craig Gerard are also exec producers, alongside Jones and McCormack.

In more Fryman news, over at CBS she’s exec-producing and directing romantic comedy pilot My Time/Your Time, based on web series 7P/10E by Avital Ash and chronicling the relationship of a young couple who are long-distance dating. The project is from Hilary Winston, How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, CBS TV Studios and Sony TV.

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) signed on to direct and executive-produce the first two episodes of USA Network’s 10-ep drama Eyewitness, which explores a grisly crime from the POV of two eyewitnesses. The adaptation of Norwegian crime thriller Oyevitne from Adi Hasak (Shades of Blue) will feature Tyler Young in one of the leads. Scott Peters (V) is an exec producer and will direct several episodes; creator Jarl Emsell Larsen will also executive produce. The series will begin production in Canada and is set to premiere in 2016.

Training Day, CBS’ reimagining of the Antoine Fuqua 2001 feature that starred Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, could see light as a sequel, according to Deadline, featuring the surviving main characters from the movie.

Amy B. Harris, creator of The Carrie Diaries, is all in as executive producer and showrunner of Designated Survivor, ABC’s inside the beltway conspiracy thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland. The project is co-exec-produced by Simon Kinberg (The Martian) and originated at Mark Gordon Co. Studios and ABC Studios. In it, Tom Kirkman (Sutherland), a low-level U.S. Cabinet member, becomes President after a catastrophic attack wipes out everyone above him in the line of succession.
