Good morning. It’s Tuesday February 7, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

A historic Super Bowl for FOX on Sunday saw audiences hand the channel with its best Metered Market rating ever, hitting a 48.8/72 metered market household rating/share, according to Nielsen Media Research, and ranking third all-time for the game, led by Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Atlanta, Norfolk and Richmond. In Fast Nationals, the game, which appeared to be an early blowout before seeing a historic comeback by the Patriots lead the game into the Super Bowl’s first OT, drew a total audience of 172 million, making the match-up the most-viewed program in television history. Across the broadcast network, FOX Deportes and FOX Sports GO, the game averaged 113.7 million viewers, with FOX snaring 111.3 million of them. That average essentially ties last year’s numbers from the CBS broadcast of 111.9 million.


Meanwhile, TiVo unveiled its post-game report highlighting this year’s most engaging commercials, promotions and in-game moments from the Super Bowl, noting that the top moment overall went to Lady Gaga’s halftime show, marking the seventh consecutive year that viewership for the performance bested that of the game with her show ranked third all off time, behind 2012’s performance by Madonna and 2015’s halftime show featuring Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz. “As one of the biggest broadcasting events of the year, this epic showdown represents the perfect opportunity for brands and advertisers to attract and engage with fans on the grandest sports stage in the world,” said Paul Stathacopoulos, VP of Strategy, TiVo. “Marketers are often searching for the most efficient and effective platforms to reach their customers but even as commercial content continues to get flashier, strategic placement is key. Using advertising analytics and data-driven audience insights can further nurture viewer engagement, leading to better entertainment experiences.”

TiVo’s Top Three In-Game Moments:
1.      At second and goal from the 2-yard line in overtime, Brady tosses the ball to James White, who scores a touchdown for the Patriots’ victory.
2.      With three seconds left in regulation time, Brady hands off to Dion Lewis, who goes out of bounds at the New England 48-yard line, leading to the first overtime in NFL championship history.
3.      At the 1-yard line, Brady hands off to James White, who crosses the goal line for a touchdown. After the 2-point conversion, the game is tied at 28-28 with less than a minute remaining in the game.

ESPN is set to celebrate Black History Month with a lineup that includes offerings will include The Undefeated delivering multiple elements such as a conversation with black athletic directors in the NCAA, a compilation of 44 dynamic Black Americans who changed the fabric of the country, The Harlem Globetrotters and more. Meanwhile, The Jump will air one feature each week in February to celebrate Black History Month. Longhorn Network will recognize several African-American sports figures who have impacted the University of Texas, while SEC Network will include a series of vignettes recognizing the accomplishments of black athletes, coaches and students from SEC institutions.

NBCSN prepares for the 2017 Daytona 500 with the fourth season of its daily motorsports show, NASCAR America on Feb. 13 at 6p. NASCAR America host Carolyn Manno joins NASCAR on NBC analyst Jeff Burton, as well as Steve Letarte Dale Jarrett and Kyle Petty. The 2017 season will now include all-new social media elements and simulator segments with analyst Parker Kligerman.

CSN Philadelphia is adding John Kruk to the broadcast team, where he will join Tom McCarthy, Ben Davis, Mike Schmidt and Gregg Murphy for the 2017 season. Kruk will make his broadcast debut on Feb. 25.
Discovery Communications continues to expand its sports presence, and will launch its first sports channel, titles DSPORT, in India. The launch marks the first time in over 10 years that a media company has introduced a new sports channel for the Indian market. DSPORT will showcase over 4000+ hours of content every year.

Twitter revealed its top brands from the Super Bowl, which drummed up more than 27.6 million Tweets globally about the game during the live telecast on FOX. Ranked by Twitter chatter, the list of most mentioned brands was topped by Pepsi, followed by T-Mobile, Avocados from Mexico, Budweiser, Mr. Clean, Audi, Skittles, 84 Lumber, Doritos and Intel. Meanwhile, Twitter announced that its total audience for the game saw 5.6 billion views of #SB51 Tweets on & off Twitter.

Beverage brand XYIENCE is teaming up with Campus Insiders for a second year to produce a new series hosted by Seth Davis, titled Don’t Mess with Seth. In addition, the company is sponsoring a national sweepstakes which will send a fan and a guest to the 2017 national college basketball championship weekend in Phoenix,


On Facebook and Instagram, the Patriots win saw 64 million people worldwide generate 240 million interactions on Facebook while 44 million people had 150 million interactions on Instagram related to the Super Bowl. Over 90% of Facebook interactions took place on mobile. The countries most engaged in the conversation outside of the US, were Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Germany. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga wrapping up her performance of Bad Romance during halftime served the most “Loved” moment of the Super Bowl.


Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok’s move to Twitch quickly handed the League of Legends player with the record for the biggest Twitch streamer of all time for a single streamer’s channel. Twitch announced Faker’s arrival to the platform on Monday following a run at Azubu, with his first stream seeing a peak of concurrent 245,100 viewers.

Major League Gaming hits the Call of Duty World League Atlanta Open with multiple streaming partners throughout the weekend. MLG.tv broadcast will offer source level quality to the viewers at home for the first time, and no secondary transcoding means will create a unique viewing experience that is indistinguishable from the actual game played at home. Fans will also be able to watch live match broadcasts, news, analysis and live replays from the event on MLG’s YouTube channel, Twitch channel, and Facebook page at different points throughout the weekend.

The ESL Pro League returns today for its fifth season, lining up a total of 28 teams from across both the European and North American regions for a ten-week playing period and battling it out for a share of the US $1,000,000 prize pool. That marks a 33% increase in the prize pool.
