Les Moonves has been named Chairman of CBS Corporation, following the resignation, effective February 2, of Sumner Redstone as Executive Chairman. Moonves joined CBS in 1995, vaulting to President and CEO in 2006. “I was honored to nominate Les as the CBS Chair and am delighted to congratulate him on his new position,” said Vice Chair of CBS Corp. and Viacom Inc., Shari Redstone. “He follows in the visionary tradition of my father, and I know that Les will successfully lead CBS into the digital future.”
Grant Gustin will cross over to CBS’s Supergirl as CW’s The Flash in an episode airing Monday, March 28 at 8p. “We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out,” said Flash and Supergirl exec producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, who described the superhero mashup as “something we have dreamed of happening since we started making Supergirl.”
Filmmaker Spike Jonze was named co-president of Viceland, with chief creative officer Eddy Moretti. The cable net, from Vice Media in partnership with A+E Networks, is slated to launch February 29, replacing H2.
Turner is going full force with new weekly late night comedy series Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Along with home base TBS, sibs TNT, Adult Swim, truTV and HLN will simulcast the premiere on Monday, February 8 at 10:30p.
The threat of skinny bundles doesn’t appear to be making Steve Burke lose much sleep. Produce good programming, and “your channels will stay in the bundle and it will be a good business for a long time,” said NBCUniversal’s CEO in an earnings call in Tuesday. When it comes to advertising, “The pendulum is swinging back to traditional television,” said the exec, and with data on viewing on different devices, “we can go to advertisers and say that we have more eyeballs than any other company.”
Comcast reported it added 89,000 subscribers in 4Q15, its best quarterly performance in nine years. “We’re giving customers the products they want at the right price, servicing them well and retaining them longer,” said Comcast Cable CEO Neil Smit.
WGN America canceled critically acclaimed, but soft-rated period drama Manhattan after two seasons. Net president and GM Matt Cherniss said WGN was “deeply disappointed that such a wonderful show could not find a larger audience.”

MTV launched an ad campaign to raise awareness of sexual assault. “Invisible Ads” includes online/digital ads that resemble familiar fashion, consumer products and hotline ads, but include commentary on how culture often dismisses rape and assault crimes. The initiative is part of MTV’s “Look Different” anti-bias campaign.
CBS, the NFL and the “I Have a Dream” Foundation are teaming for two CBS Cares PSAs to air during Sunday’s Super Bowl. The spots, featuring Tea Leoni (Madam Secretary) and Tom Selleck (Blue Bloods) will spotlight the need to increase higher education for children in low-income families. “A 60 Minutes segment about our founder Gene Lang in the mid-‘80s led to widespread national attention for our organization,” said Donna A. Lawrence, president and CEO of the Foundation, “and now the broadcast of these CBS Cares PSAs to the massive Super Bowl audience will tremendously help our mission of breaking the cycle of poverty for thousands of families across the country, making the dream of a college education a reality for their children.”

The distributor also signed pacts for Pompeii: Life Before Death and Building the Ancient City: Athens and Rome, among others.
MENA pay-TV platform beIN signed six channels from Discovery Communications, five of which are exclusive to beIN in the region.“In partnership with beIN, we are providing a stronger offer to our viewers and commercial partners, and we look forward to working alongside beIN to increase the reach of our content in the Middle East and Africa,” said JB Perrette, president of Discovery Networks International.

The season two premiere of Science’s What On Earth? broke series records among W25-54, Persons and Men 18-49 and delivered a series high 780,000 total viewers P2+ on Tuesday, January 26 at 9p in L+3.The episode was up 52 percent in viewership versus the season one premiere in 2015, and delivered hefty gains among P25-54 (85 percent), M25-54 (72 percent), W25-54 (107 percent) and P18-49 (62 percent).
Super Bowl Greatest Commercials delivered its largest audience since the special premiered in 2001, with 11.4 million viewers. During the two-hour CBS special, over one million votes were cast on CBS.com for best commercial.

FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story opened as the most-watched and highest-rated show on cable on Tuesday, with 5.1 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among A18-49.
Talker Steve Harvey scored its best ratings ever the week ending January 24, up 21 percent versus the week before to hit a 2.3 HH rating and 3.15 million viewers (thank you, Miss Universe and her runner-up). Harvey-hosted Family Feud was up 7 percent to reach 7.5, an all-time high for the game show’s current iteration. And court show Hot Bench also hit a series high, up 4 percent to 2.6 and 3.7 million viewers.
Dr. Phil had a 6 percent lift to match a season high 3.4, while second place chatfest Live With Kelly and Michael rose 3 percent to reach 3.2. Rachael Ray had a 6 percent boost to hit a season high, 1.7, up 21 percent year to year.
News nets were winners in the Iowa caucuses. An average of 10.2 million people watched the results of Monday’s contest on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, according to Nielsen, double the number of people four years ago. FNC averaged 4.46 million viewers during primetime, followed by 3.73 for CNN and 2 million for MSNBC.
DIY delivered 95,000 P25-54 primetime impressions in January, a 14 percent increase over last year. January 2016 ranks as one of DIY Network’s strongest months ever among viewers W25-54 in prime, with impressions in the demo growing 26 percent over January 2015 thanks to drivers including Texas Flip and Move and Barnwood Builders.
CW’s The Flash finished first in its 8p time period on Tuesday in broadcast among A18-34 (1.2.5) and M18-34 (1.4.6). It was second in the hour among A18-49 (1.4/5) and M18-49 (1.7/6).
Bounce TV’s Premier Boxing Champions – The Next Round on Sunday rose 53 percent over its previous telecast among HHs, 63 percent among P18-49 and 94 percent among M18-49, averaging 257,000 HHs and 418,000 total viewers between 9p-11:26p.
Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship on Monday posted a .8 rating (800,000 imp) among A25-54 as well as a .7 rating (200,000 imp) among A25-34, up 54 percent and 80 percent versus year-ago.
Travel Channel’s P25-54 prime ratings in January increased 5 percent over the same time last year. Booze Traveler and Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations helped drive the net’s primetime ratings success on Tuesday night, up 33 percent over year ago. Wednesday prime ratings had a 53 percent lift, with an assist from Expedition Unknown, and Sunday prime ratings grew 29 percent, thanks to Mysteries at the Museum.
GSN finished January up 24 percent among W18-49 year-over-year in Total Day and 21 percent in Ad Sales Prime (W18-49, year-over-year). The network also saw 10 percent growth in total viewers for Total Day in January.

CBS’s Super Bowl Greatest Commercials topped 8p with 2.0.7, followed by 1.4/5 for CW’s The Flash. Super Bowl spots rose to 2.1/7 at 9p, versus 1.6/5 for NBC’s Chicago Med.
