Good morning. It’s Wednesday February 4, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Bill Raftery is being tapped to call the Final Four and National Championship by Turner Sports and CBS Sports, teaming with Grant Hill for microphone duties this year. The duo will join Jim Nantz and reporter Tracy Wolfson to call games together throughout the 2015 NCAA Tournament. With Greg Anthony on the sidelines indefinitely following his arrest, this year’s NCAA Tournament marks the first time Raftery and Hill will call the Final Four and Championship game. Nantz, Raftery, Hill and Wolfson will team for the first time to call the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament semifinals on Saturday, March 14, and championship game on Sunday, March 15, on CBS.
 

ON THE AIR

Stephen A. Smith is going long with ESPN, inking a new multi-year deal with that company. The agreement includes continuing his role as a featured commentator on ESPN2’s First Take, while also continuing to serve as a major contributor to SportsCenter, as well as other ESPN shows and properties.
 
Despite early buzz about a potential weekly show showcasing the official bracket from the NCAA men’s basketball selection committee (echoing a similar format from the College Football Playoff model), the NCAA will not offer fans a preview of the bracket rankings, according to CBSSports.com. Dan Gavitt, NCAA Senior VP for the men’s basketball championships, told the site the NCAA men’s basketball committee decided against holding a TV show that would unveil an official, up-to-the-minute look at the bracket and/or an overall rankings system but would review the possibility in the future.

The Professional Bull Riders are launching an initiative to expand the profile and importance of several events on its BFTS schedule. Dubbed the PBR Majors, the events will be comprised of four of the highest-profile BFTS events on the schedule and each will be broadcast nationally on CBS and offer increased world standings points and prize money and unique formats. The four event will take place Feb. 28 in Arlington, Las Vegas over Memorial Day Weekend, as well as Nashville and NY’s Madison Square Garden. “Every one of the twenty-six regular season Built Ford Tough Series events is a unique sports and entertainment experience and extremely important from a competitive standpoint over the course of a season.” PBR Chief Operating Officer Sean Gleason said. “The four we have targeted as PBR Majors have become special events of their own accord.  Increasing the prize money, points and prominence of these events is recognition of the unique characteristics that make them special and must-see events for PBR fans.”

NBC Sports Group revealed coverage plans for nearly 40 NASCAR touring series events, which will spotlight both divisions of the K&N Pro Series, the Whelen Modified Tour, and the Whelen Southern Modified Tour on NBCSN this season. The schedule revs up Feb. 19 at 10:30p with the broadcast of the Feb. 15 K&N East season opener at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway.

ASPiRE is reeling in award-winning documentary Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC which will run on the network on Thursday, February 19 at 9p. The film explores the history, culture, and social impact of New York’s summer b-ball scene.

The Hawks loss to the Pelicans on Monday, Feb. 2, generated a 4.7 household score in the Atlanta DMA on SportSouth. The marks the highest-rated Hawks regular season game ever on the network. During the Hawks’ 19 game winning streak, the team averaged a 2.5 HH rating on the channel.

NESN will carry live coverage on-air and online of the Patriots Victory Parade today with coverage starting at 10a. NESN’s Adam Pellerin will be joined in studio by the Boston Globe’s Shalise Manza Young, while NESN’s Don Orsillo and Elle Duncan will be at City Hall Plaza to cover all the festivities.

Always tip your caddy. Bloomberg reports that caddies to golfers such as Greg Norman, Zack Johnson and the late Payne Stewart are suing the PGA TOUR in an effort to get a cut of the sponsorship money being pulled in by the organization. The caddies say that are forced to wear endorsement bibs for corporate sponsors without pay, which are worth $50 million a year. The caddies filed a complaint in federal court in San Francisco, seeking a court order blocking the PGA Tour from making them wear the bibs and requiring payment of royalties for use of their images.

The NBA and Special Olympics will hold the fourth annual NBA Cares Special Olympics Unified Sports Basketball Game at Madison Square Garden for the first time on Feb. 14 at 9:30a. The 2015 matchup will feature 12 Special Olympics athletes from around the world, with the majority of Special Olympics athletes competing in the game set to attend the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in LA from July 25  Aug. 2.  The athletes will play alongside the likes of Chris Mullin, Dell Curry, Tamika Catchings and Tina Charles in the West and Jason Collins, Detlef Schrempf, Special Olympics Global Ambassador Elena Delle Donne and Ruth Riley in the East. 

The Foley/Maloof group pushing for a NHL team here in Las Vegas turned to the Super Bowl to drive attention to their efforts to launch a season-ticket campaign for a potential team here in the market. The campaign is set to roll on Feb. 10 and the group purchased two local 15-second spots in the first half of the game on Sunday.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

With the Super Bowl in full swing, the NFL announced that traffic to its digital properties on Sunday set all-time records for the game. Overall, platforms saw more than 21 million visits on Sunday with nearly four million people watching live streaming video of the game on NBC Sports Live Extra (2.5 mm viewers) and NFL Mobile from Verizon (1.2 mm viewers). The 1.2 million viewers on NFL Mobile from Verizon was actually up 224% from Super Bowl XLVIII.

MLB.TV went on sale yesterday, announcing a new high definition media player for the upcoming season that has been completely reengineered and powered through “a responsive, in-page layout with re-designed features such as simplified user controls and game-event milestone markers. MLB.TV will also introduce a Spanish-language audio overlay option for every available game on supported devices.
