02/25/22: UEFA and the IOC joined the chorus condemning the invasion of Ukraine

Amid Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, UEFA will now move the 2022 UEFA Champions League out of Russia with the formal decision set to be announced today at an UEFA executive committee meeting, according to multiple reports. The men’s soccer game was originally slated to take pace on May 28 at Saint Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena.

“UEFA shares the international community’s significant concern for the security situation developing in Europe and strongly condemns the ongoing Russian military invasion in Ukraine,” the governing body said in a statement. “We remain resolute in our solidarity with the football community in Ukraine and stand ready to extend our hand to the Ukrainian people.”

Elsewhere, the Russian national team was set to face Poland in the 2022 World Cup playoffs in March, but the visitors have requested not to play on Russian soil, as have Sweden and the Czech Republic. In addition, the International Olympic Committee gave a statement that the org “strongly condemns the breach of the Olympic Truce by the Russian government.” Formula 1 has also removed a page on its website selling tickets for its race in Russia later this year.

PROGRAMMING

In happier news, the 2022 Major League Soccer season kicks off Saturday, with a slate that will run through the MLS Cup on Nov. 5. ESPN lined up coverage of the season this weekend that will kick off with 10 MLS Live on ESPN+ out-of-market matches. On television, ESPN and ESPN Deportes will televise LA Galaxy vs. New York City FC on Sunday at 5p. In 2022, ABC and ESPN platforms will carry more than 380 regular season matches, led by 34 matches across ABC (10), ESPN (23) and ESPN2 (1). ESPN Deportes will air Spanish-language telecasts of all 34 matches. Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman call the action for English matches.

Around the dial, FOX Sports announced plans to celebrate the start of MLS season with an enhanced broadcast schedule showcasing 34 regular season matches throughout the year. The 34-match schedule, featuring seven games on FOX and 27 games on FS1, includes twice as many matches in prime time vs. last year. The campaign kicks off Saturday at 7:30p on FOX when the Portland Timbers host the New England Revolution. Play-by-play announcer John Strong and match analyst Stu Holden return to form FOX soccer’s lead broadcast booth and will call both ‘MLS is Back’ opening weekend matches. Alexi Lalas, Maurice Edu and Cobi Jones headline FOX Sports’ group of analysts, in addition to former England defender Warren Barton. Renowned play-by-play broadcaster JP Dellacamera is back with Keith Costigan also calling matches throughout the year. Rob Stone will serve as lead host for MLS studio coverage, while Dr. Joe Machnik returns as the network’s rules analyst to round out the FOX Sports soccer roster.

Speaking of FOX, the network reports that its coverage of the Daytona 500 delivered an average of 8,868,000 viewers on Sunday. That marks FOC’s best performance for the race in 2019, and ranking as the second-most streamed NASCAR event in FOX Sports history, with an AMA of 77,107.

The New York Post reports that Troy Aikman is on the verge of leaving FOX Sports for the waters of ESPN, where he would become the primary analyst for Monday Night Football.

Saturday’s Manchester City/Tottenham showdown ranks as the most-watched Premier League match in almost four years as NBC and Peacock averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 1.42 million viewers. NBC Sports this season has now registered two of the four-most watched live PL matches ever in the US.

NBC Sports presents the 2022 NTT INDYCAR Series season opener with live coverage of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday at noon on NBC, Universo and Peacock. Lead INDYCAR commentary team of Leigh Diffey (play-by-play), Townsend Bell (analyst) and James Hinchcliffe (analyst) will call the race. For the first time, Telemundo Deportes will provide Spanish-language coverage of three races this season, including this weekend’s season opener, the Indianapolis 500 and the season finale at Laguna Seca. Omar Amador will join race announcer Sergio Rodriguez to provide live commentary on the three races airing on Universo and streaming on TelemundoDeportes.com and the Telemundo Deportes app.

NHL Network’s coverage of the 2022 NHL Stadium Series will include editions of NHL Tonight prior to and following the outdoor game, with host Jamie Hersch and analysts Stu Grimson, E.J. Hradek and Kevin Weekes reporting live from Nashville. Host Lauren Gardner and analysts Ken Daneyko and Brian Lawton present from the Secaucus studios on Saturday at 6:30p and 10:30p.

NFL Network and NFL Digital Media offer multi-platform coverage of the NFL Scouting Combine Presented by Verizon from Indianapolis starting March 1. Overall, NFL Network serves up over 50 hours of live Combine week coverage, offering the first look at the 2022 NFL Draft class. This year, coverage of the Combine again extends into primetime beginning Thursday, March 3 with seven hours of live coverage of the quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends starting at 4p and continuing until 11p.

NBC Sports revealed its television schedule for the 2022 MotoGP season on NBC and CNBC, beginning with the Grand Prix of Qatar on March 6, at 1:30p on CNBC. All 21 races will be presented on either NBC or CNBC, with NBC presenting coverage of five MotoGP races during the 2022 season:

NASCAR and NBC Sports mapped out broadcast coverage for the 2022 slate of grassroots races on USA Network, including events in the ARCA Menards Series East and West, and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The NHL, the National Hockey League Players’ Association and TikTok secured an accord to deliver original content and unique experiences to TikTok’s global community. The partnership will come to life in several ways, including in-ice branding and the introduction of the TikTok Tailgate Stage at two outdoor NHL events – the 2022 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series on Feb. 26 in Nashville, Tenn. and the 2022 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic on March 13. WWE and On Location revealed an exclusive multi-year partnership to provide fans with hospitality packages to all of WWE’s biggest events, including WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, Survivor Series and Money In The Bank.
