IN THE NEWS
“2021 was by all measures an exceptional year for our company,” said Discovery, Inc. CEO David Zaslav in reporting the company’s financial results for the quarter and year. “We grew our global DTC paying subscribers to 22 million, a tailwind for our strong distribution revenue growth of 11%, while global advertising revenues grew 10% due to continued strength in our key markets and share gains. Additionally, we ended the year with nearly $4 billion of cash on hand and generated robust cash flows, supporting our ability to invest in growth initiatives.” Zaslav also noted Discovery is on track to close its merger deal with WarnerMedia, forming Warner Bros. Discovery, in the second quarter. Addressing investor concerns about the business model of streaming, Zaslav said, “Our goal is to compete with the leading streaming services, not to win the spending war.”
Scripps Networks has rebranded Court TV Mystery as ION Mystery. “Mystery has added popular procedural dramas to its schedule and with the network’s programming now more connected with the hall of fame line-up of hit dramas on ION, aligning the two networks creates increased consumer recognition, expands brand affinity and cross-promotional strength, and facilitates the ability to naturally share content and more,” said Lisa Knutson, President of Scripps Networks.
A&E has pulled “Adults Adopting Adults” off the air after three episodes, and erased it from all platforms. While the Daily Beast reported the docuseries was canceled due to fan reaction to one of the show’s stars, A&E said its decision was prompted by low ratings.
Could waits in airports get a little more bearable? BuzzFeed and airport retailer Stellar Partners have entered into an agreement to bring news convenience stores to airports. The first two BuzzFeed stores will open in the spring of 2022 in New York’s LaGuardia Airport. While browsing travel supplies, snacks, magazines, beauty and lifestyle items, travelers will be able to see news and entertainment provided by BuzzFeed on monitors. “We’ll utilize our data-driven research and insights to give consumers a curated travel experience with the products they want most,” said Melanie Summers, SVP of Consumer Products, BuzzFeed.
Massages are coming back to Google, and a Covid vaccine mandate is being lifted. The company, which expects to welcome employees back to their offices three days a week in the coming weeks, is restoring perks like office massages after they were halted during the pandemic. While vaccines are no longer required, the unvaccinated will have to undergo testing and wear masks.
“It is to the detriment to Women of Color to be in environments that have adopted a dominant culture façade,” says veteran DEI practitioner Suezette Yasmin Robotham. “Code switching literally erodes at the core of your being by creating the illusion that who you are is either not enough or too much for an organization.” Robotham offers perspective on code-switching, authenticity in the workplace, and the critical importance of representation, in Cynsiders.
Sixty percent of March Madness viewers are likely to discuss ads from the event via social media/mobile games on their phone, and over half of viewers are interested in ads played during sports events, according to a survey from AdColony. A majority of viewers think it’s important to keep up with sporting events on multiple devices. When watching sport events on CTV, 32% of March Madness viewers are usually looking up content on a mobile device related to the event.
“ALF” has landed at Shout! Factory. The company has acquired distribution rights to NBC’s 1986-90 alien sitcom, giving streaming service Shout! Factory TV exclusive US rights spanning digital, broadcast and home entertainment packaged media.
Dish Network lost 273,000 video customers in 4Q21, versus a loss of 133,000 in the year-ago period. Dish pointed to lower gross new Dish TV subscriber activations and a slightly higher Dish churn rate, as well as challenges from competing services faced by Sling TV, for the numbers. Still, Dish Network hit Wall Street targets, with full-year revenue inching up from $12.7 billion to $12.75 billion, due in part to a 4.5% increase in pay TV average revenue per use.
