IN THE NEWS

Discovery Inc. beat analysts’ expectations for 4Q20, with earnings per share of 76 cents on $2.886 billion in revenue. Ad sales were flat versus last year, while distribution revenue rose 5%. Streaming service discovery+ now counts more than 11 million global paid subscribers, a number expected to hit 12 million by the end of February. “Our unmatched global scale and ability to serve consumers everywhere with a truly differentiated offering across platforms, as well as our robust cash flows, even amidst the significant investments in our next generation initiatives and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, position us to achieve sustainable long-term growth and drive long-term shareholder value,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO.

Dish Network lost 149,000 Dish satellite subscribers, and gained 16,000 Sling TV streaming subs in 4Q20. In the quarter prior, Dish’s loss of 87,000 subscribers was more than offset by Sling’s added 203,000. Still, Dish revenue rose to $4.56 billion, versus $3.24 billion in 4Q19, beating Wall Street estimates.

A spokesperson for Woody Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn issued a statement calling HBO’s docu-series ”Allen v. Farrow,” which explores allegations by Dylan Farrow that her father, Allen, molested her when she was seven, “a hatchet job riddled with falsehoods. Woody and Soon-Yi were approached less than two months ago and given only a matter of days ‘to respond.’ Of course, they declined to do so.”

More reactions to Sunday’s premiere of “Allen v. Farrow”: Tony Lyons, President of Skyhorse Publishing, cried copyright infringement over the show’s use of the audiobook of Allen’s autobiography, Apropos of Nothing, without permission. And Dylan Farrow tweeted, “Thank you to everyone for their kind words…Speaking the truth is so difficult, but I hope any fellow survivors who watched last night know they are not alone.”

Harry Shearer has been replaced by voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson as the voice of Dr. Hibbert on “The Simpsons,” in keeping with the Fox show’s policy that white actors will no longer voice Black characters. Richardson’s credits include “F Is for Family,” “Family Guy” and “Bless the Harts.” Shearer, who had been voicing Dr. Hibbert since 1990, will continue as Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner and Mr. Burns.

Some members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are accusing the organization behind the Golden Globes Awards of ethical lapses, according to a report in the LA Times. While a lawsuit filed by a Norwegian journalist who accused the HFPA of “a culture of corruption” was dismissed in November, the Times investigation found that even as the organization has been working to rehabilitate its image, it regularly issues substantial payments to its members – totaling $1.929 million in the fiscal year ending in June 2020 – that could violate IRS guidelines. “We are mindful of the unprecedented economic challenges facing our employees due to the effects of the pandemic,” an HFPA representative told the Times. “The HFPA is committed to maintaining the continuity of our skilled and experienced workforce to ensure our future success, and will continue to compensate them for the range of services they provide to the organization.” The 78th Golden Globes are Sunday, February 28 at 8p on NBC.

The Media Rating Council has issued a draft document outlining guidance and best practices for advertising measurement in OTT and CTV environments, and when Server Side Ad Insertion digital video techniques are used. Among the main issues addressed:
· A refinement of the definitions MRC uses for “Over the Top” and “Connected TV,” designed to more closely align with current industry terminologies.
· The identification and encouragement of certain measurement-related best practices specific to SSAI.
· The highlighting of relevant existing guidance on issues of particular importance to OTT/CTV and SSAI, including on such matters as the impacts on measurement of latency, continuous play, “TV Off” situations and the application of invalid traffic detection and filtration in these environments.
After a 30-day public comment period, during which comments on the draft will be accepted and considered, the MRC will issue a final draft.

A letter was sent to 12 cable, satellite and streaming companies asking if they plan to continue to carry networks described as “misinformation rumor mills and conspiracy hotbeds.” House Democrats Rep. Anna Eshoo and Rep. Jerry McNerney, who are on a committee holding a hearing this week on the spread of disinformation and extremism on media platforms, pointed to Fox News, One America News Network and Newsmax as networks “that produce content that leads to real harm.” Responded Fox News, “Fox News Media provided millions of Americans with in-depth reporting, breaking news coverage and clear opinion. For individual members of Congress to highlight political speech they do not like and demand cable distributors engage in viewpoint discrimination sets a terrible precedent.”

A new, multi-year partnership between Lowe’s and Hogar de HGTV will include a research program designed with Horowitz Research to better understand the behaviors, preferences and needs of Hispanic DIYers and pros – a key feature of the deal. “Through our established US Hispanic networks – Discovery en Español and Discovery Familia – and our newest offering, Hogar de HGTV, we have learned a great deal about Hispanics’ preference for content and what drives their needs as consumers,” David Tardio, VP, Advertising Sales, Discovery U.S. Hispanic, tells Cynopsis. “In order to best serve this growing population segment, it is critical that we gain deeper, more personal insights – and this new, long-term partnership with Lowe’s allows us the chance to do exactly that.”

The NFL is looking to double the price its network partners pay to broadcast games, according to CNBC. The league is in active discussions on renewal rates with NBC, Fox, CBS and Disney’s ESPN. Disney, which pays $1.9 billion for Monday Night Football, almost twice the average price the other nets are paying for games, has reportedly rejected “anywhere close” to double that for a new deal, sources tell CNBC.

Piers Morgan is being accused of bullying by over 1,200 UK TV freelancers, in an open letter to ITV. Why? “I’d rather employ a lobotomized Aardvark,” tweeted Morgan after Adeel Amini, who once worked as a researcher on Morgan’s “Life Stories,” suggested that he wouldn’t want to repeat the experience. “As freelancers working within television, we feel a responsibility to speak out against bullying and harassment wherever we see it, including from on screen personalities who are all too often poorly reprimanded for unacceptable behaviour and abusive conduct,” the letter said.

PBS International has licensed docu-series “Hemingway,” directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, to broadcasters around the world including the BBC (UK), RAI (Italy), YLE (Finland), NRK (Norway), and Sky Network Television (New Zealand). The series premieres in the US in April.
