The Rams’ win over the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI reeled in a Total Audience Delivery of 112.3 million viewers, across NBC, Telemundo, Peacock, NBC Sports Digital, NFL Digital platforms and Yahoo Sports mobile properties. That ranks as the most-watched show in five years, just below Super Bowl LI in February 2017, which boasted 113.7 million TAD on FOX. The game also saw a total reach of 167 million viewers. On NBC alone, the game averaged 99.2 million viewers on NBC, up 4% over last year’s game while Telemundo averaged 1.9 million viewers, easily ranking as the most-watched NFL game in U.S. Spanish-language history. Meanwhile, Sunday night’s live primetime Beijing Olympics coverage after the Super Bowl averaged a TAD of 24.0 million viewers, serving as the largest NBC Olympics primetime audience since the opening Sunday of the 2018 Winter Games.

PROGRAMMING

Looking ahead to the NBA All-Star Game presented by Kia, taking place on Sunday at 8p, will offer multiple viewing experiences, anchored by TNT’s coverage with Kevin Harlan calling the game for the first time, alongside Reggie Miller and Dwyane Wade and reporter Allie LaForce. This year’s All-Star experience will also include “Inside the All-Star Game,” innovative all-access coverage on TBS, including the studio team of Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith. “We always strive to put the fan first and, now more than ever, we have the opportunity to serve them with multiple viewing options that share best-in-class content values,” said Craig Barry, Chief Content Officer, Turner Sports. “We’re looking forward to introducing this new, unique format on TBS, and we believe it will entertain fans through an unparalleled blend of sports, culture and unprecedented access.”

Meanwhile, Turner Sports’ Bleacher Report tips off the start of NBA All-Star in Cleveland with hours of live stream content on the B/R app – B/R CLE 2022. Held at Ingenuity Cleveland, the central hub of creative expression in the city, B/R CLE 2022 will be a free public event featuring live Bleacher Report programming and interactive activations including the debut of an NFT Creation Station powered by Coinbase, along with a performance by Gunna. The platform then offers a full-day of live programming that will spotlight its top brands, content franchises and talent.

NBA TV takes on NBA All-Star 2022, with live and original programming starting Thursday, that will include All-Star practices and media availabilities throughout the weekend as the NBA celebrates its 75th Anniversary season. Two members of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team – Charles Barkley and Julius “Dr. J.” Erving – will be featured in Basketball Stories: “Sir Charles & The Doctor” on Feb. 21, at 8p, while a new 90-minute special, Hoops & Harmony presented by Corona, will celebrate some of the most popular musical performers and their passion for basketball. Hosted by Ro Parrish, live from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the show will air Friday, at 4p.

American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco published an “open letter to college football” on Monday, reaffirming support for a 12-team college football playoff. The current 12-year deal expires after the 2025 season. His preferred format calls for six highest-ranked conference champions to qualify for the playoff, along with the next six highest-ranked teams. Aresco also noted that “Power 5/Group of Five branding must end,” writing that the labels were “arbitrary and harmful to the sport and to the perception of fairness. It diminishes the accomplishments of potential playoff teams.”

ESPN is showcasing festivities from the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend festivities in Las Vegas via 2022 NHL All-Star All Access, a one-hour special featuring behind-the-scenes action from the 2022 NHL All-Star Skills presented by DraftKings Sportsbook, the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Game, Media Day and mic’d up content from All-Stars on and off the ice. Produced by NHL Original Productions, program premieres on Friday on ESPN+ and YouTube/NHL.com; at 6p on SN1; and at 7p on NHL Network.

ESPN Events revealed competitors for the 2022 Phil Knight Invitational, which will feature eight men’s teams and four women’s teams competing during ESPN’s annual Feast Week, running Nov. 24-27. Men’s teams competing in PKI include Alabama, Iowa State, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oregon, Portland, UConn and Villanova. The women’s PKI field features Iowa State, Michigan State, North Carolina and Oregon.

Busch Light is serving up the Busch Light Accelerate Her Program, committing $10 million to sponsor every 21+ woman driver in NASCAR, with an eye to providing more track time, more media exposure and more training to these athletes. The partnership includes direct sponsorship fees, brand social-media support, media value and awareness through owned assets and additional media training and earned public relations.

Collegiate Sports Management Group and The BrandR Group, a brand management agency specializing in group licensing and sponsorship rights in the collegiate marketplace, locked in a partnership in the Name, Image, and Likeness and group licensing space that will be focused on blending personnel resources and university network connections for mutual benefit, as well as the development of turnkey solutions that work at a conference level. Meanwhile, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association secured a multi-year corporate partnership agreement with The Coca-Cola Company that extends the brand’s run as the official beverage partner of the CIAA. The United States Football League locked in a foundational partnership with Sportradar. The multi-year agreement, reached following a competitive bid process, establishes Sportradar as the Official Sports Data Partner of the USFL and the league’s official integrity partner and Sportradar will develop new data collection and delivery systems for the league and its related businesses, including media and gaming, and will provide data to betting operators advertising during USFL telecasts.

The PGA TOUR and NBC Sports launched “PGA TOUR Pick’Em Live” within the official PGA TOUR app and on the TOUR’s website. World Soccer Talk launched a complete rebrand and redesign of its mobile and desktop sites. WSC Sports announced $100 million in Series D funding to power their growth in the sports media landscape. The round was led by new investor ION Crossover Partners, with participation from existing partners Intel Capital, O.G. Tech and Detroit Venture Partners (Dan Gilbert) and will be used to grow headcount and new products and platforms focused on OTT, NFTs and sports betting.

ESPORTS

The Overwatch League detailed plans for its fifth season, which will get underway on May 5, and include multiple tournaments, including a midseason global tournament, and regional tournaments in the Kickoff Clash and the Summer Showdown. Overall, each team plays at least 24 regular-season games, up from last year’s relatively count of 16 games. The final tournament of the year, the Countdown Cup, serve as wild card play-ins for the postseason, giving two teams the chance to enter the bracket. Sean Miller, head of the Overwatch League, confirmed in a video that live events will be returning during the 2022 season.

Riot’s LCS named Jackie Felling as the league’s new commissioner. She takes over for Chris Greeley, who was elevated to the Head of Esports for North America and Oceania at Riot Games last year. “It would be easy to be intimidated by the challenge of leading the LCS product with its decade-plus history, passionate fans, engaged owners and high expectations for North America – but I instead feed genuinely excited to listen and learn and take time to understand what this ecosystem needs and wants,” she said in the announcement.

NASCAR and NACE Starleague are partnering up to offer college students nationwide to opportunity to compete in the newly-launched eNASCAR College iRacing Series, bringing competitive sim racing to more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide. The new series will be presented by NASCAR Official Partners Coca-Cola, Logitech, Playseat and Southern Computer Warehouse. “Gaming and Esports are an important component of NASCAR, allowing us to reach new fans who are often engaging with the sport for the first time,” said Nick Rend, Managing Director of Gaming and Esports, NASCAR. “Our various eNASCAR initiatives have seen exponential growth.
