Discovery has scheduled a special shareholder meeting for March 11, to vote on the company’s proposed merger with WarnerMedia. The $43 billion deal got the go-ahead from the US Department of Justice last week, and has the approval of Discovery’s biggest shareholders, John Malone and Advance/Newhouse.

In-program brand placements during NBC Primetime Olympics telecasts are driving brand recall above competitive broadcast brand/category norms, while delivering greater alignment than recent Olympic Games, according to an NBCUniversal recap covering data up to February 8. The company reported that that in terms of recall, integrations have produced +12% greater Brand Memorability than prior year competitive broadcast brand/category norms, according to EDO. In terms of favorability, the 2022 Olympics’ enhancements are well aligned with the Games, driving +160% greater Fit than those in each of the last two Olympics.

Kanye West released a song in which he threatens SNL staff. The “diss track,” featuring a sample from Alicia Keys, targets the workplace of Kim Kardashian’s boyfriend, Pete Davidson. The lyrics in question include “a hundred goons [pulling] up” to SNL’s headquarters, and “When I pull up, it’s dead on arrival.”

GAC Family has picked up “The Kitten Bowl” after its cancellation on Hallmark Channel. Renamed “Great American Rescue Bowl,” the special will air Sunday, February 12, 2023. “The plight of animal homelessness continues to be pervasive throughout the country, so being able to televise a proven difference maker in helping pets find their forever homes was an easy decision,” said Bill Abbott, President and CEO of GAC Media, and former CEO of Hallmark parent Crown Media. “We’re incredibly proud to welcome ‘Great American Rescue Bowl’ to GAC Family and are excited about this massive, fan-favorite event being an annual anchor to the network’s pet-centric programming.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

HBO Max ordered season two of Spanish horror series “30 Coins,” from Alex de la Iglesia. “If the first season was the gathering of the storm clouds, the second will be the maelstrom preceding an epic storm. The characters are involved in a hellish plot, where death and resurrection are two sides of the same coin,” said de la Iglesia. Shooting for the eight-parter will take place in Spain, Italy, France, the UK and the US.

Payman Benz (“Black Monday”) will direct and exec produce four episodes of Netflix comedy “Blockbuster,” set in the last Blockbuster Video store in America.

Cyber Group Studios is partnering with Peacock on the new animated adventure series “Press Start!”. The show, based on the bestselling Scholastic book series of the same name, is now in production and is expected to premiere 4Q23.

Peacock also announced the pickup of DreamWorks Animation’s “Megamind’s Guide to Defending Your City” and “Abominable and the Invisible City,” follow-ups to the films, as well as pre-school series “Team Mekbots Animal Rescue,” “Dino Pops” and season two of “Babble Bop!”.

Disney is regaining control of the six Marvel “Defenders” shows. Currently licensed by Netflix, “Daredevil”, “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “The Punisher,” “The Iron Fist” and “Defenders” will not be available on that streamer after March 1, and will go home to Disney. No word on whether the shows are headed to Disney+ or Hulu.

Casting notes: Chris McNally (“When Calls the Heart”) landed recurring roles in two series: Paramount+’s upcoming “Rise of the Pink Ladies,” and season 2 of Netflix’s “Firefly Lane.”…Shi Ne Nielson (“The Fosters”) will recur on season four of The CW’s “Charmed.”…Ray Stevenson (“Vikings”) has boarded Disney+’s upcoming “Star Wars: Ahsoka.”…Michael Rapaport (“Atypical”) will play a detective in season two of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”

The fifth and final season of FX’s “Better Things” kicks off Monday, February 28 at 10p with two episodes.

Hosted by Broadway actor Nadia Brown (“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”), “The Green Room With Nadia Brown” debuts Wednesday, March 23 at 11p.

RuPaul has been set as host and executive producer CBS prime time word game “Lingo.” The show, first launched in syndication in 1987 and hosted by Ronald Reagan’s son Michael in 1987, comes amid the Wordle craze.

Nickelodeon’s “Nick News” will shine a spotlight on the topic of kids and mental health in an episode debuting Wednesday, February 16 at 7:30p. US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy will join a group of middle schoolers for an open roundtable discussion where the kids share personal stories of how they manage their mental wellness and get advice on how to cope with anxiety and stress.

Australian comedy “Colin From Accounts” been acquired by CBS. Writers and stars Patrick Brommel and Harriet Dyer play “flawed, funny people” in the dark comedy.

Abacus Media Rights has acquired worldwide distribution rights to “Reel Britannia” from Jon Spira and Hank Starrs (Canal Cat Films). The series is headed to BritBox in the UK, US, Canada, and South Africa.

Banijay has partnered with French producer Alain Goldman via the production entities Pitchipoï Productions and Montmartre Films (previously Légende Films). The deal will see the group and Alain Goldman team to grow a pipeline of premium quality scripted IP, in the form of both series and feature-length films.

Viewings of Super Bowl ads before the game topped 1.33 billion impressions, triple that of last year, as marketers used pre-game commercial slots to expand their reach past the viewers of the game. The most viewed commercials were from Pepsi, Nissan, Bud Light, Amazon and Frito-Lay.

Ratings are on the rise for NBCU’s Olympics coverage. Thursday’s coverage saw total audience delivery of 13.2 million viewers, up from 12 million on Wednesday. While that’s well below the 19.3 million viewers for the corresponding Olympics night in 2018, NBCU’s multi-platform coverage has drawn over 2 billion streaming minutes.

The freshman run of Food Network’s “Guy’s Chance of a Lifetime” reached nearly 9 million P2+ viewers and averaged a .6 P25-54 / .7 W25-54 L3 rating, finishing as Food Network’s highest-rated freshman launch since 4Q20, up +61% vs. 2021’s freshman prime average and up +14% vs prior six-week timeslot benchmarks.

Lifetime’s original movie premiere of “Single Black Female” delivered 1.8 million total viewers in Live +3 numbers.
