01.31.17 Good morning. It’s Tuesday January 31, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
SiriusXM emerged as the next stop of Brent Musburger, as the former ESPN broadcaster will team with Al Bernstein to launch VSiN (Vegas Stats & Information Network) at the radio platform. VSiN marks the first national radio channel dedicated to sports gaming, and will launch on February 27, anchored by Musburger and Bernstein, who will each host shows dedicated to providing exclusive and proprietary news, analysis and data to fans. Meanwhile, Sunday sees Musburger host a special early edition of his show, My Guys in the Desert on SiriusXM Rush at 3p.
The new channel will be broadcast live, seven days a week, from the floor of the sports book at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa in Las Vegas and offer gaming enthusiasts with unbiased, timely, actionable information and expert perspectives on daily sporting events, including worldwide professional and college sports, boxing, MMA, horse racing and more with oddsmakers Jimmy Vaccaro, Vinny Magliulo and Chris Andrews.
“You didn’t think I’d put down the microphone completely, did you?!” said Musburger. “We’re incredibly excited about this new chapter and I look forward to having the platform of SiriusXM to talk to sports fans each day. We’re not here to tout or sell picks, but to talk about the real science behind gaming to help educate people about the games and what they read in the papers and hear from friends.”
On the ratings front, NBC Sports’ coverage of the 2017 NHL All-Star Game averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 2.28 million viewers across NBC and NBC Sports Digital platforms, according to Fast National from Nielsen and digital data from Adobe Analytics. The NBC-only broadcast averaged 2.262 million viewers, up 42% over last year’s game on NBCSN. The event was the most-watched NHL All-Star Game since 2004, and delivered a 1.32 household rating, up 47% vs. 2016.
Saturday’s Kansas/Kentucky game emerged as ESPN’s highest-rated overnight game of the season. The matchup, part of the annual SEC/Big 12 Challenge presented by Sonic lineup, drew a 2.0 overnight rating for a markup of 11% over last year’s overtime contest. ESPN also saw a streaming average minute audience of 78,000 viewers, up 32% over last year’s game.
The Australian Open Championships boosted ESPN’s overnight rating for both the men’s and women’s championships. The Williams Sisters match earned a 0.7 overnight rating for the live telecast on ESPN on Saturday at 3a from Nielsen’s metered markets, up 17% from the 2016 Championship. The five-set battle between Federer and Nadal posted a 0.9 overnight rating on Sunday at 3a on the network, up 80% from the 2016 final.
MMA franchise XFC locked in a deal with CBS Sports Network to televise championship its events in the United States and Canada. The first event to air under the new partnership is set for March. “The partnership with CBS Sports Network further increases our visibility,” said XFC President Myron Molotky. “We are committed to bringing MMA to the largest markets and as many fans as possible. In 2017, we’ll have more exposure than ever before, thanks to our great warriors inside the hexagon and to our television partners.”
ESPN continues to add talent. The network announced that that two-time World Series Champion David Ross is joining the company as a Major League Baseball analyst for a variety of ESPN platforms, including its MLB studio coverage, SportsCenter and for select games. Meanwhile, the company is also bringing in former Bills coach Rex Ryan to join ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown this week to help break down Super Bowl LI.
Speaking of ESPN, the International Hot Rod Association will return to its networks for the first time in 18 years. The IHRA and ESPN reached an agreement for two days of racing from events in the 2017 IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship to stream live on ESPN3, with events beginning Feb. 4-5 from Immokalee Regional Speedway.
Tonight sees MLB Network debut Jim Leyland: A Life In Baseball at 9p. The documentary examines Leyland’s relationships with players, coaches & the cities where he managed over his three-decade MLB career with interviews from the likes of Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Sean Casey, Gary Sheffield and Andy Van Slyke.

Feb. 6, marks the debut of SC6 with Michael and Jemele, the 6p edition of SportsCenter hosted by ESPN commentators Michael Smith and Jemele Hill. The premiere episode of the weekday offering will be features as an hour-long simulcast on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS with the revamped version offering a “deliberate and well-paced conversational format in which they discuss sports topics, news, culture and social issues.”
SiriusXM hits the Super Bowl on Sunday with 10 different game broadcasts to choose in addition to programming from SiriusXM NFL Radio, Mad Dog Sports Radio, Fantasy Sports Radio and more as well as talent that includes Jenny McCarthy, Craig Ferguson, Maria Menounos and more coming from Radio Row this week from Houston. In addition, Super Bowl LI Radio launches as a special week long pop-up channel on SiriusXM 134, delivering the best programming happening across SiriusXM’s channels on Radio Row during Super Bowl Week with live “listen-ins.”

The Madison Square Garden Company & MSG Networks announced a renewed and expanded multi-year marketing sponsorship with Lexus, continuing the luxury automaker’s role as one of Madison Square Garden’s Signature partners. Lexus will remain the Official Luxury Auto Partner and Luxury Vehicle of Madison Square Garden, as well as The Theater at Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers, the New York Liberty and the Concert Series at Madison Square Garden. In addition, Lexus will now serve as the Official Luxury Auto Partner and Luxury Vehicle of Radio City Music Hall, the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes and the New York Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes.
Phoenix Raceway and International Speedway Corporation laid out details of a $178 million modernization of the race track with a variety of enhanced amenities for fans, teams, sponsors and other stakeholders. DC Solar, entitlement partner of Phoenix Raceway’s spring NASCAR XFINITY Series race, the DC Solar 200, will serve as the title sponsor for the modernization project as well as a multi-year sponsor of the redesigned Midway. Highlights include a completely redesigned infield featuring a first-of-its-kind Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Garage Fan Zone while the start/finish line will be repositioned in Turn 2 just before the track’s well-known dog leg. Other new highlights include a new pedestrian tunnel connecting the infield to the new seating areas featuring in-seat Wi-Fi connectivity.
WWE teamed with KFC for the restaurant’s newest spot, which featured WWE Superstars Enzo and Cass and ran during the Royal Rumble broadcast. The spot promotes the new line of Georgia Gold chicken and will air in WWE Network broadcasts until WrestleMania on April 2.
Twitter announced plans to work with Sky Sports to live stream Sky’s analysis and coverage of the Premier League Transfer Deadline Day tomorrow, marking the first live streaming partnership Twitter has announced with an organization based in Europe. The multi-platform service will include: reporters following every Premier League club through until the window closes; 24 hours of ‘Transfer Centre’ on Jan. 30; live streaming of key coverage across Twitter on Deadline Day and more.
The PGA TOUR unveiled the release of a new app exclusive to Microsoft Windows 10 featuring a real-time leaderboard, quick access to player scorecards and biographical information, along with video highlights and the latest news from PGATOUR.COM. Highlights will feature a rotating 3D hole and shot visuals as well as data visuals for stats, scores and player performances, reimagined player scorecards and cortana powered voice commands.
Campus Insiders lined up 120 men’s and women’s lacrosse games to run on its network this season. In partnership with the Patriot League and the Air Force Academy, the games will appear on CampusInsiders.com and across the Campus Insiders network including various mobile and connected devices. The action begins Feb. 11 with Maryland/Navy at noon, Virginia/Loyola Maryland at 1p and Bryant/Bucknell at 1p.
