Amazon surpassed Wall Street expectations during its quarterly earnings report yesterday, with $29.33 billion in revenue at 45 cents per share, a 15 percent hike from the year prior. Analysts were expecting earnings of 18 cents per share at a $29.68 billion rev. The service increased membership by 53 percent from last year, according to CEO Jeff Bezos.
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
Comedy Central digital platform CC Studios unveiled its latest slate of originals yesterday. The five new projects include: an untitled show from comedian Matt Braunger (Up All Night), Vine-themed How to Be Friends With Everyone on Earth (wt), an untitled Rich Fulcher show (The Hotwives of Orlando), Broken People (wt), and an untitled series from David Angelo (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon). Current CC Studios series This Is Not Happening and Idiotsitter will move to linear TV this year, while Six Guys One Car and New Timers will return for a second season.
Nickelodeon will soon be available without a pay-TV subscription, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman announced during the network’s Q1 earnings call. He said that the new offering is based on the current success of the net’s TV Everywhere platforms, specifically with children’s content. The service will debut next month.
YouTube celeb Ed Bassmaster (1.8 million subscribers) is making the leap to TV with The Ed Bassmaster Show on the CMT network. DiGa, the production company from former MTV executives Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, will produce the new series with the comedian. Bassmaster will prank unsuspecting people around the nation, in the guise of his YT characters. “He’s almost like Ali G meets Eddie Murphy in Nutty Professor," DiSanto described the YouTuber to The Hollywood Reporter.
Amazon will bring the U.K.’s half-hour comedy Catastrophe to its Prime Instant Video service later this year. Series stars Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan; they try to start a relationship after Horgan’s character gets pregnant. It is currently airing on Channel 4 in the U.K.
Evolve Media’s TotallyHer Media division launched the TotallyKidz business unit yesterday. With an exclusive representation deal with Spil Games, TotallyKidz reaches 11.3 million users per month, placing it as the number two kids property behind Disney Entertainment (ComScore, Dec. 2014). “In launching TotallyKidz, we are offering marketers an underserved but rapidly growing demographickids and tweens who actively choose PC, tablet, or mobile gaming over television viewing,” Evolve Chief Revenue Officer Geoff Schiller said. “Research proves that kids become brand-loyal early making them a critical component in effective advertising.”

CONTENT MEDIA
Actress Rachael Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy) will join Netflix’s upcoming Marvel series Jessica Jones. Netflix recently added David Tennant (Doctor Who) alongside Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) and Mike Colter (American Horror Story) to the cast. The 13-episode show will be released on the streaming service later this year, along with other Marvel series Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Instead of purchasing a $4 million 30-second spot during the Super Bowl, IFC will employ Portlandia’s “In Other Words” bookstore (or “Women & Women First” store portrayed in the series) volunteers to tweet throughout the game on the @Portlandia Twitter handle. Last year, the IFC campaign generated more than 8,000 tweets with the hashtag #FeministBookstoreSaysWhat and gained more than 16,000 new followers.

Sony announced a partnership with Spotify, shutting down its own Music Unlimited platform on March 29. A new music service will be put in its place and backed by Spotify instead, called PlayStation Music, and made available on desktops, PlayStation 4, PS3 and Xperia devices. “PlayStation Network users will enjoy the convenience of linking your accounts to Spotify, making it easy to sign-up with your existing ID and subscribe to Spotify’s Premium service," Sony said in a blog.
Fox Digital Entertainment and Orpheus Interactive launched the premiere episode of Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect mobile game for iOS smartphone and tablets. The next installment in a series of ten planned episodes will arrive on the app later this year.

Pinterest continues to roll out advertising on the bookmarking site, pushing paid-for-pins into users’ feeds. Initially, Pinterest only included ads in the search results when users browsed through categories. Marketers still cannot buy advertising in the home feed, but can buy pins that are targeted at certain categories and for those that trigger signals, such as shares or how many times something was “repinned.” “I would say we are speeding things up because advertisers are ready,” Pinterest’s Head of Partnerships Joanne Bradford told the Wall Street Journal. So far, the promoted pins have proved successful, averaging the same number of times a regular pin is “repinned” (around 11 times).
YuMe signed a license agreement with D.A. Consortium (DAC) to build a private ad marketplace across devices in Japan using the YuMe for Publisher (YFP) platform. The partnership will also guarantee a supply of YM inventory from publishers, including LG Electronics and boost audience base across multiple devices.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
Google released its short documentary The Moon For Good – The New Space Race on YouTube. The 24-minute film, narrated by Tim Allen, originally played in planetariums across the U.S. Google created the film as a piece of branded content for its Google Lunar XPrize, a $20 million award for the first private group to land a robot on the moon by the end of 2016.
