A new feature on YouTube allows you to search the site while also watching videos (as long as you do it on Google Chrome). This feature already exists on YouTube’s mobile app, but now can be done on laptops and desktops across as well. Picture-in-picture is still in beta.
AT&T’s $49 billion acquisition of DirecTV made it the largest pay-TV provider in the United States. Now, the company is planning to use some of that power on the digital video side, including offering a video service designed for cord-cutters, CNET reports.
Hulu and Netflix are both losing Doctor Who when their licensing deals with BBC expire at month’s end – but, as Decider notes, the series could conceivably return to one or both services before long. Learn more here.
Classic 1959 cult film “Plan 9 From Outer Space” has been called the “worst film ever made.” That kind of love earned the film a remake, which is coming to VOD on February 16 thanks to Gravitas Ventures.
FilmOn TV Networks has acquired CinemaNow, the premium movie and next-day TV platform, from Regent Equity Partners. Donna Smith is now President of CinemaNow.
CuriosityStream, an ad-free SVOD service featuring documentaries, has upgraded its website to provide free previews, the ability to more easily share content, and exclusive content for non-subscribers.
Netflix became available earlier this month through parts of Asia. Folks in Indonesia only had a short time to enjoy the service, though. PT Telkom Indonesia, the country’s largest telco, has blocked access to Netflix on its Internet platforms because it says Netflix has violent and pornographic content. The company is looking to work with Netflix to see what changes can be made in order to unblock it from Indonesian customers.
TiVo plans to double its engineering center in eastern Romania, established a year ago. The company expects to add a group of programmers who handle Java services, as well as another group that is focused on technical support for European customers, Romania Insider reports. The center currently houses 70 programmers.
Crackle is adding to its scripted programming with a new series, Start Up. The 10-episode season will premiere later this year and be produced by Critical Content and Hollywood Gang Productions. It will star Martin Freeman (Fargo), Adam Brody (CHiPS,) Edi Gathegi (The Blacklist) and Otmara Marrero (Graceland). According to a release, the show will center on a “brilliant, yet controversial tech idea gets incubated on the wrong side of the tracks by three strangers who don’t necessarily fit the mold of ‘tech entrepreneurs.’” It is being filmed in Puerto Rico.
David Bowie may have died, but a new web series soon to be in production has found a creative way to pay its respects. According to Backstage, Light Street Studios is looking for actors to appear in the series that centers around “David Jones, a recent college graduate, (who) is hired at a hot creative branding agency staffed entirely by different versions of David Bowie, all multitudes of one creative force battling each other and ultimately themselves.”
Interactive One, the digital platform that targets African American and millennial audiences, has launched Music in Motion, a digital content series for Toyota Avalon that “centers on creating your own unconventional destiny as shown through the intersection of art and music,” according to a company release. It will be promoted across iOne and anchored on TheUrbanDaily.
More than 1,400 of the collector car world’s most impressive vehicles are expected to be on the block at this week’s 45th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. Velocity and Discovery Channel are also there, broadcasting 37 hours of live coverage on Barrett Jackson Live. Last year, the auction drew more than 34 million real-time viewers to Velocity.

Data from Tremor Video shows people of all ages are seeing fewer movies in theaters but many more movies at home. The average adult now watched 1.4 movies in a theater each month while taking in 5.7 movies at home in the same time period. Online video advertising is now the third most common way for adults to find out about new movies, coming in at 34%, behind TV commercials (77%) and word-of-mouth (54%). Online video ads, though, immediately give consumers other ways to engage with the movie. Tremor’s research found that after viewing an online ad for a new film, consumers did the following:
– visited the movie’s website (27.7%)
– searched for reviews (21.8%)
– looked for theaters (15.6%)
IAB has released new data showing that cross-channel audience recognition and measurement will be key priorities in 2016. In the Bureau’s new report, “The Outlook for Data: 2016 Snapshot,” 70% of surveyed marketers, media buyers, publishers, and digital advertising technology executives said “cross-device audience recognition” will be a key area of focus and innovation this year. More than half (53%) surveyed said they will focus on programmatic media buying for emerging formats, including mobile and addressable television, in 2016. In contrast, 43 percent stated that time, attention, and resources will be dedicated to programmatic buying for already-established formats.

Mobile advertising spending in China surpassed desktop spending last year for the first time, according to eMarketer. The new report, “China Mobile Advertising: Heady Growth amid Economic Uncertainty,” shows that mobile ad spending reached $15.82 billion, making up 22.3% of total media ad spending in China. That is a larger percentage than in any other market on the planet. eMarketer is predicting that things aren’t slowing down in China, either, with total mobile ad spending forecast to increase 58% in 2016.
Nielsen announced at the Interactive Advertising Bureau Annual Leadership Meeting that Digital Ad Ratings has successfully completed its beta period in Google‘s DoubleClick. Digital Ad Ratings is the first independent campaign audience measurement solution available in select DoubleClick markets internationally.
IAB’s Education Foundation and its iDiverse Initiative have created an entry-level training, certification and job placement pilot program for college students. Classes are expected to begin this spring. This should aid IAB in its stated desire to have its members hire 10,000 people with underrepresented backgrounds, including minorities, women, disabled individuals and military veterans, by the year 2020. Students who complete the course and gain certification will meet with recruiters for one-on-one interviews to be matched with potential employees among the IAB.
Amy Maniatis has joined Maker Media as Chief Marketing Officer. She has previously been the CMO for the National Geographic Society and the National Trust. Maker has also added Deanna Brown as its new Chief Content Officer. Brown previously served as a Samsung Accelerator Product Lead (CEO in Residence), President, Byliner, and CEO Federated Media.
