01.28.15 Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 28, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Snapchat named ESPN as its exclusive sports publisher in the US for their new Discover platform where ESPN will hand-curate content exclusively for the platform. Daily editions are set to highlight the top news of the day with 5-10 stories per day, 7 days a week and content in the first edition set to include NBA Power Rankings, a ranking of the Top 10 players on the Super Bowl roster, video and a photo gallery.
Outside the borders, the platform has tapped Bleacher Report to deliver sports content on the service for international audiences. Bleacher Report will offer daily content updates to Snapchat users in the United Kingdom, Canada and throughout Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. Content offerings will include “short, shareable sports stories specifically created for an international audience” via videos, images, animations and graphics.
NBC Sports formally laid out its pregame plans ahead of Super Bowl XLIX, with programming starting on NBC at noon on Sunday. Bob Costas will open the six-hour Super Bowl XLIX Pre-Game Show, with the show offering live reports from the team hotels and the stadium, in-depth features and interviews with players and coaches and X’s and O’s analysis. Other talent will include Dan Patrick, Josh Elliott, Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, Hines Ward, Mike Florio and Peter King as well as Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and Michele Tafoya. Liam McHugh will serve as an on-site host at the stadium, Carolyn Manno and Randy Moss will report from the team hotels, and Doug Flutie will appear in on-field segments. In addition Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh will join as a guest analyst. Coverage is also set to include interviews with President Barack Obama, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Katy Perry as well as celebs Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Adriana Lima.
In addition, NBC Sports Group slated the NASCAR Gridiron Challenge presented by Toyota, a one-hour special pairing NASCAR drivers with former NFL athletes in a series of stock car races and a football challenge. The special debuts Friday at 10p immediately following the NASCAR America Hall of Fame Special. “The NASCAR Gridiron Challenge is a fun way to promote NASCAR and our upcoming coverage,” said Sam Flood, Executive Producer NBC Sports and NBCSN. “This event serves as an example of how numerous NBCUniversal platforms are using Super Bowl XLIX weekend to promote new programming.”
Meanwhile, Golf Channel and NBC are once again upping the ante on LPGA coverage, announcing a TV lineup for the 2015 season that will see nearly 400 hours of coverage, the most in LPGA history. Golf Channel kicks off its 2015 LPGA tournament coverage today with the Coates Golf Championship Presented by R&L Carriers from 2-5p, launching the first of 31 tournaments for the year.
Frank Nobilo is now part of team CBS Sports, with the company hiring the veteran broadcaster and winner of 14 tournaments worldwide as an analyst for the Network’s golf coverage beginning in 2015. He will work select tournaments, including the Masters and PGA Championship. Meanwhile, Nobilo continues to serve as an analyst for Golf Channel.
Christina Aguilera signed on as the latest performer set for next month’s 64th NBA All-Star Game. She will perform a New York-themed medley during player announcements and be joined by The Rockettes. The league previously announced that Ariana Grande would perform at the NY event as well.
As we close in on National Signing Day on Feb. 4, ESPNU lined up coverage for the 10th straight year with 11 hours of TV coverage that will include live commitments from over 15 of the country’s top recruits. Programming runs from 8a-7p and will see the ESPNU National Signing Day Special originate from ESPN’s studios in Charlotte with Rece Davis and Matt Schick serving as hosts and joining the likes of ESPN national recruiting director Tom Luginbill and analysts Mike Bellotti, Desmond Howard, Danny Kanell, and David Pollack. In addition, 14 reporters will be embedded on college campuses, including Ohio State and Alabama. New tweaks this year will include the debut of a National Signing Day insider room featuring ESPN Recruiting Nation writers and ESPN’s social media team.
Pac-12 Networks also revealed plans for National Signing Day with an expanded 2.5-hour Pac-12 Football Weekly: Signing Day Special at 5:30p PT hosted by Mike Yam, alongside Rick Neuheisel and Yogi Roth. Pac-12.com offers a special Football Signing Day microsite dedicated to news and analysis.

Corus Entertainment’s W Network announced additional wives slated to be featured in the eight-part docu-series Hockey Wives, which debuts on March 18 at 10p. Featured along the previously announced cast members, Nicole Brown, wife of Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown and Hollywood star Noureen DeWulf (Anger Management, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past), wife of Vancouver Canucks goalie Ryan Miller.
SiriusXM is offering multiple broadcast options for the Super Bowl with subscribers receiving 10 different game option in eight languages. Options include the Patriots team broadcast, the Seahawks broadcast as well as the national radio broadcast and ones in Spanish, Hungarian, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Chinese and German. Meanwhile, hosts in Phoenix during Super Bowl Week include Gil Brandt, Tim Brown, Rich Gannon, and Pat Kirwan, along with the likes of Jamie Foxx, Jenny McCarthy, and Joel and Victoria Osteen.
ESPN unveiled its biggest NCAA Division I Softball slate to date with more than 100 games on deck across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network and Longhorn Network and at least 300 games carried on ESPN3 and SEC Network +. ESPN will also have extensive coverage of the 2015 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, including every game televised from the Super Regionals and Women’s College World Series. Coverage begins on ESPNU with Florida/Alabama on March 21.

The NBA pays tribute to Chinese New Year with a celebration that will span Feb. 19 to March 4 and feature a record 56 live games broadcast and streamed in Greater China. The festivities tip off with Stephen Curry, James Harden, Jeremy Lin and Dwyane Wade paying a surprise visit to a Chinese family in a spot that runs from Jan. 27 through March 5 across all of NBA China’s television and digital partners’ platforms. In addition, for the first time in NBA history, teams that include the Warriors and Rockets will wear specially designed Chinese New Year uniforms that pay tribute to the league’s Chinese fans and their culture.
The Special Olympics is launching the first-ever Special Olympics Unified Relay Across America presented by Bank of America. The relay will look to give anyone in the country a chance to carry the Flame of Hope that will be lit in Athens, Greece and deliver it to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics World Games. Over the course of 46 days, in a hand-to-hand exchange, over 20,000 participants will run, walk or bike a segment of the relay in this team and individual fundraising event as it passes through all 50 states. The relay will culminate at the Opening Ceremony of the Los Angeles 2015 Special Olympics World Games on July 25, 2015. ESPN will produce the Opening Ceremony live as well as a nightly highlights program throughout the nine-day event.
Super Bowl ad updates…
- The NFL is setting aside 30 seconds during Sunday’s game for a public service ad from No More to raise awareness of domestic abuse.
- NBC parent company Universal will run an ad during the game for Ted 2, starring Mark Wahlberg, that will feature New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady according to THR.
- BMW officially premiered the new, 60-second spot for the all-electric BMW i3 set to run during the first quarter of NBC’s broadcast with “Newfangled Idea,” featuring Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel. The spot “juxtaposes the famous 1994 Today Show clip of Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel’s initial confusion surrounding “what is the Internet?”, to Katie and Bryant in 2015 grasping the newfangled concept of the revolutionary BMW i3.”
Meanwhile, the Professional Bull Riders are teaming with discount military shopping destination GoxX.com to offer discounted tickets to select Built Ford Tough Series events in 2015. PBR will join sports organizations such as the MLB, NBA and AHL in supplying discounts to those who serve and protect our country. In addition, PBR is teaming for the fourth consecutive year with the American Forces Network to bring the 2015 PBR Built Ford Tough Series to more than 1 million American service members, Department of Defense civilians and their families worldwide.
Quicken Loans re-signed as title sponsor of the 2015 Quicken Loans All-Star Football Challenge, set to run on Jan. 30 at 6p on ESPN2. In addition, PlayStation re-signed as a participating sponsor.
WWE saw WWE Network pass the 1 million subscriber mark 11 months after launch. These results mark a 37% increase (24% domestically) in subscribers since last reported. “We’re thrilled that we’ve surpassed the 1 million subscriber milestone less than a year after launching WWE Network and in advance of WrestleMania, our biggest event of the year on March 29,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “We remain focused on delivering an outstanding value proposition for ours fans by adding new content and new features in the coming year.” Viewer data indicates that, on average, close to 90% of subscribers access WWE Network at least once per week and 99% access WWE Network at least once per month.
120 Sports is launching its multi-sport content on Apple TV. The deal will deliver users with access to live and on-demand content through the Catch-Up and Timeline modes. “With this latest launch, we are happy to provide our fans with a new platform to experience 120 Sports,” said 120 Sports president Jason Coyle. “We will continue to explore even more ways to deliver up-to-the-minute sports news to our current fans and new audiences, when and where they want it.”
