01/26/17: Facebook takes new steps against fake news, tests new “stories” feature

Good morning. It’s Thursday January 26, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

UX: UX is short for User Experience. The phrase refers to the overall experience of a person using a website or app. UX encompasses all aspects of a user’s interaction with a product.

TOP NEWS

Tech companies sure have been going out of their way disassociate themselves from fake news. And for good reason: There’s a lot of money involved. Google just released a report describing 340 instances in which it took actions against fraudulent news sites. All told, the tech giant says it banned almost 200 of those sites from using Google ads. The moves came in November and December, Google says. It was back in November when Google altered its AdSense policy, banning sites that “misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher’s content, or the primary purpose” from receiving ad dollars.

Facebook, too, is making additional moves to curb fake news on its platform. As detailed in a new report from the Wall Street Journal, the company’s software will now only surface topics that have been covered by a significant number of credible publishers. The move is designed to give added weight to stories that have been around for a while, in the hopes of quashing hoaxes. In addition – and this is a big deal – Facebook’s trending news topics will no longer be personalized to every individual user. In other words, Facebook is trying to poke a hole in the so-called “filter bubble,” exposing users to a wider variety of sources, events and viewpoints. The moves come about a month after Facebook announced plans to hire third-party fact-checkers to vet news items.

Well this was inevitable. It’s been roughly five months since Instagram took some, shall we say, inspiration from Snapchat in launching its own Stories feature. Now Instagram’s parent company looks set to do the same thing. As first reported by Business Insider, Facebook has been testing a Snapchat-like stories feature on its mobile app in Ireland. The company reportedly plans to roll the feature out to additional countries in the coming months. The format debuted in Ireland’s Facebook mobile app earlier this month; it lets users share photos and other media with friends and followers. The content disappears after 24 hours, and doesn’t appear in a user’s regular News Feed.

ADVERTISING

Magna
, IPG Mediabrands’ ad-buying unit, just landed a major deal with Roku. Magna specializes in developing investment, intelligence and innovation strategies, working in areas such as targeting, programmatic workflows, audience measurement, and interactivity. Under the new partnership, Roku will work with Magna to deliver improved ad targeting and metrics to marketers using its platform. Roku’s OTT platform supports Digital Ad Ratings (DAR), Nielsen’s digital measurement product. All IPG Mediabrands campaigns active across Roku will be measured by DAR.

ESPORTS

In one of its most important partnerships to date, Facebook has just nailed down the exclusive broadcast rights to Heroes of the Dorm, a college eSports tournament from Blizzard Entertainment. The event has been broadcast on ESPN2 for the past two years. The 2017 tournament, produced by Blizzard in partnership with Tespa, will feature Heroes of the Storm teams from U.S. and Canadian colleges. It’ll stream on Facebook Live on the Heroes of the Storm page. The regular season starts on February 15, the regional finals run from March 8-9, and the final four and championship matches will stream on April 8.

OTT + SVOD

Back in December, shortly after AT&T’s DirecTV Now live TV service launched, T-Mobile thought up a novel way to stop its customers from fleeing to AT&T: offering them a free year of DirecTV Now. (No, the service isn’t exclusive to AT&T users.) But since then, DirecTV Now has encountered a number of technical issues and complaints, and hasn’t agreed to give out any refunds. Now T-Mobile is out to stay in its customers’ good graces: It just offered them a free year of Hulu’s ad-supported tier, which normally costs $7.99 monthly. The offer extends to any former AT&T customer who switched to T-Mobile specifically to receive a free year of DirecTV Now. T-Mobile’s stated motivation, according to their official press release: “As the New York Post put it, DIRECTV NOW is ‘a total disaster.’” If the telecommunications industry has a troll, T-Mobile is it.

RESEARCH

Tweet of the week: @rileyx18: STATE JUST BEAT DUKE OH MY GOD IM SHOOK
Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming from Jan. 18-24 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Insights from the 3,807,100 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– 6.3% of viewers who said something on TV was beautiful were watching the People’s Choice Awards on CBS.
– Excluding sports and specials, 6% of people who laughed at something on TV were watching Saturday Night Live on NBC, with guest host Aziz Ansari.
– 12.7% of viewers who reported having their mind blown by what they were watching were tuned into college basketball on ESPN where North Carolina State upset Duke on their home turf.
– Finally, it’s no surprise that the Presidential Inauguration of Donald Trump, which aired across multiple channels and was streamed live online, prompted mixed emotions from viewers last Friday. While viewers expressing love accounted for 29.2% of ERs, 16.1% of ERs expressed dislike and another 13.4% expressed hate.

TRIVIA

Our Last Trivia Question: On Tuesday, a film distributed by Amazon Studios was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. (No other streaming service – not even Netflix – had pulled that off yet.)  Which movie was it? Answer: Manchester by the Sea. You should go see it. DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT

What do an interior designer, an astronautics professor, a space explorer, and a travel expert have in common? Cisco enlisted all of them to help dream up what a space hotel might look like in an age of galactic tourism. The experts used Cisco Spark, Cisco’s tool for online meeting and team messaging, to work on the project. Cisco put then together two videos – a short film about designing the hotel, and a 360-degree “tour” of the hotel itself. Here’s the latter. (You can find the short film on Cisco’s YouTube channel.)

See you tomorrow,
David Teich
