Discovery Channel and Science Channel group chief Rich Ross said at Sundance over the weekend that Oscar-winning filmmakers Fisher Stevens and Ross Kauffman are behind a new documentary for the network, Taken by the Tiger, about the rapidly diminishing population of tigers in the wild.
 
Pilot season is back. ABC is off and running with an order for an untitled comedy from former Last Man Standing showrunner Tim Doyle and ABC Studios. The project is set in the ‘70s and revolves around a working-class Irish-Catholic family.
 
Fox is in the game with its first pilot orders of the season. Our People is a comedy from Lee Daniels and Modern Family exec producer Vali Chandrasekaran; Rel is a comedy starring Lil Rel Howery, exec-produced by Jerrod Carmichael; and Mixtape is a musical drama from former Smash showrunner Josh Safran.
 
Lisa Edelstein is developing an hourlong comedic drama for herself with her former Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce exec producer Carol Barbee and Universal Cable Productions. Based on the book Confessions of a Sociopath by M.E. Thomas, the project is about a woman who’s diagnosed as a sociopath.
 
Hallmark Channel is the new home for Holly Robinson Peete’s reality series Meet the Peetes, formerly called For Peete’s Sake when it aired on OWN.

Snapchat is serious about clamping down on leaks. Following the early release of info on features like its “Stories Everywhere” feature, a memo to Snapchat employees said, “We have a zero-tolerance policy for those who leak Snap Inc. confidential information….If you leak Snap Inc. information, you will lose your job and we will pursue any and all legal remedies against you. And that’s just the start.” The memo was (irony alert) leaked to Cheddar.
 
Facebook is aiming to fill feeds with higher-quality news by surveying users to ascertain their trust in publishers. “Publications that do not score as highly trusted by the community may see a decrease” in their ranking, said Adam Mosseri, head of News Feed, in a blog post.
 
A full 40% of Facebook users report using the company’s Watch video platform, per a new Morgan Stanley survey. Among users on Facebook 3 or more hours a day, 60% said they use Watch on a weekly basis. “We are encouraged (and admittedly surprised) by this early Watch traction as it speaks to [Facebook’s] ability to drive adoption of new products,” said the report.
 
Amazon is increasing the price of a Prime subscription from $10.99/month to $12.99. Annual subs will remain $99. For new customers the price hike is in effect now; current customers will see the bump after February 18.
 
Warner Bros. and Turner are teaming to launch their movie streaming service FilmStruck internationally, beginning this month in the UK. The service, overseen by Turner International’s Digital Ventures & Innovation Group and Warner Bros. Digital Networks, currently is available in the US for $6.99/month.

The newly launched Fable Studio showcased its VR adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s book The Wolves in the Walls at Sundance. The film puts the viewer in the role of the imaginary friend of the protagonist, an 8-year-old girl who hears noises in her house and thinks it’s wolves. Director Pete Billington said the project builds on work that Oculus Story Studio did on the Emmy-winning project Henry.

Univision Communications Inc. promoted Michael S. Mueller to SVP of business development. Since joining UCI, Mueller has served as VP of business development for Univision Local Media. Before UCI, he held various roles at Conde Nast and Hachette Filipacchi Media.
 
Helen Jackson, the BBC Worldwide content chief, is exiting as the company merges with BBC Studios. Jackson, who’s been with BC Worldwide for 31 years, was responsible for acquiring stakes in British production companies Expectation Entertainment and Lookout Point, among others.
 
All Def Media hired Brooke Goldstein as co-president and COO, and promoted Chris Blackwell to co-president and chief digital officer. Scott Weintrob also was promoted, to executive creative director. Goldstein most recently was head of sales at ESP Properties, North America. The appointments are the first since company co-founder Russell Simmons exited amid sexual assault allegations.
 
Creative & digital agency We Are Royale hired Eric Zapakin as head of production. Zapakin joins Royale from Imaginary Forces, where he was a senior producer.

Bob Smith, the first openly gay comedian to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, died at age 59 after a long struggle with ALS. Smith also was the first openly gay man to star in his own HBO Comedy half-hour special, in1994.
 
Dorothy Malone, film and TV actress who starred as matriarch Constance MacKenzie in the ‘60s series Peyton Place, has died at age 92 of natural causes. Her other TV credits include ABC’s The Greatest Show on Earth, several Peyton Place TV movies and 1976 miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man.
