01.20.16 Good morning. It’s Wednesday January 20, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
From this day forward, the satirical news site The Onion will be a Spanish-language publication… Okay, that’s not true – though Onion Inc. has indeed sold a large stake to Univision Communications. “Univision…has acquired a good chunk of Onion Inc. as of today, and may acquire the remainder down the line,” wrote Onion Inc. CEO Mike McAvoy in a memo to employees. Onion Inc.’s publications include the flagship Onion website, the satirical sites ClickHole and StarWipe, the arts and pop culture site The A.V. Club, and the digital video network Onion Studios. The details of the deal, including the size of Univision’ stake, weren’t officially disclosed, though more than one publication has reported that Univision will take a 40% stake, valued at under $200 million. At the very least, Univision will probably start paying for Joe Biden’s carwashes.
Oh joy. Pee-wee Herman is returning, and now there’s an official release date. Paul Reubens’ beloved character will make his comeback in the new Netflix original film Pee-wee’s Big Holday, available exclusively on the platform March 18. As Cynopsis Digital has previously noted, the film will make its official world premiere earlier that month, at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.
Looks like she’s not done brooding. Netflix has renewed Marvel’s Jessica Jones for a second season. The show debuted in November.
Oscar De La Hoya may be done boxing, but that doesn’t mean he’s done with boxing. Golden Boy Productions, the former champ’s promotional firm, has teamed with the streaming service FilmOn to launch two new boxing-centric channels. The Golden Boy Channel will feature recordings of de la Hoya’s old fights, while the Ring Channel will live-stream new fights every two weeks. The channels, which will be free and ad-supported, are slated to launch on FilmOn at the end of this month. The news was initially reported by Variety.
First the legalization of Cuban cigars, and now this. CubaNetwork, a new mult-platform network devoted to the island nation, will debut as an OTT service this April. (The video services provider Vubiquity will handle the digital storefront management services.) The network also plans to debut a linear cable TV network the following month. Most of CubaNetwork’s programming will come from a partnership with RTV Commercial of Cuba, which will provide TV movies, telenovelas, docs, sports, and other programming.
Some more international news: HBO will debut a stand-alone web service in Spain by the end of 2016, according to a report from Bloomberg News. No pay-TV subscription will be required. The cable net will not renew any of its content licensing deals with other services operating in Spain, opting instead to make its own service the sole Spanish streaming home of its original programming.
Looks like some investors are feeling very patreonic. The crowdfunding platform Patreon announced that it has raised $30 million in series B funding. The round was led by Thrive Capital, with participation from Allen and Company, and follow-on investments from Charles River Ventures, Index Ventures, Accomplice, and Freestyle Capital. Patreon facilitates donations from fans to creators of videos, podcasts, webcomics, and other content.

It’s not all doom and gloom for Al Jazeera. Just a week after announcing the impending shut-down of its American arm, the Qatar-based news org has launched its app on the Apple TV. The video-centric news app, called AJ+, initially launched on mobile devices in 2014, and went on to achieve significant popularity on social media.
Verizon has launched a 1,000-user beta test of FreeBee Data, a new program that will allow content providers to pay delivery fees to subsidize their own content, taking the data costs out of the hands of users. Wondering why a content provider would ever be so generous? The idea is that reduced data costs will up the number of eyeballs. Still, it remains to be seen just how eager companies will be to get involved. Gameday, AOL, and Hearst Magazines are amongst those onboard for the beta test, according to Verizon.
Score one for free expression – sort of. Pakistan has restored YouTube access to its citizens after a three-year shutdown. The country initially blocked Google’s video-sharing site when the company refused to delete Innocence of Muslims, a now-infamous anti-Islamic short film, from the site. The new Pakistani version of YouTube features a custom homepage aimed at the country’s viewers. It might be pointed out that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is still reserving the right to flag videos it deems inoffensive – and if YouTube doesn’t abide by the takedown requests, the site may just find itself blocked again. Call it Free Speech Lite.

A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Oh, is that all? Netflix announced that it added a higher-than-expected 5.69 million subs in Q4 2015, ending the quarter with about 75 million global subscribers. On top of that, the company posted $1.82 billion in revenue and an earnings-per-share of 10 cents. (Wall Street had projected $1.83 billion and an earnings-per-share of 2 cents). The company’s shares increased by over 10% in after-hours trading following the report.
YouTube video marketing company Pixability announced a new hire. Nancy Lazaros will now serve as Chief Financial Officer. Most recently, Lazaros served as Chief Financial Officer of the video advertising management company Extreme Reach.
